Minority Languages from Western Europe and Russia by Svetlana Moskvitcheva,Alain Viaut Pdf

This book offers a comparative approach within a general framework of studies on minority languages of Western Europe and Russia and former Soviet space, focusing on linguistic, legal and categorization aspects. It is connected to a comparative study of the semantic contents of the terms referring to the different categories of these languages. The volume features multidisciplinary approaches, first linguistic (sociolinguistic and semantic) and legal, and investigates the limits of country-to-country comparisons, mirroring cases from France, Spain, and China with their counterparts from Soviet and later Russian configurations. Special examples, from a region as Ingria and a country as Tajikistan, help to contextualize this approach. In addition, the notion of migration languages, also minority languages, is studied in bilingual contexts, both from external (German, Greek, Chinese ...) and internal origins (Chuvash), linked to the urbanization in contemporary societies that has fostered the presence of these languages in major cities.

A Grammar of the Russian Language (Classic Reprint) by W. R. Morfill Pdf

Excerpt from A Grammar of the Russian Language I have allowed myself occasional references to other Indo European languages for purposes of illustration. Great pains have been taken with the aspects of the verbs, perhaps the most interesting feature in the Slavonic forms, and it is hoped that they are made as clear as is possible in a rudimentary work of the present kind. Cultural and Linguistic Minorities in the Russian Federation and the European Union by Heiko F. Marten,Michael Rießler,Janne Saarikivi,Reetta Toivanen Pdf

This is the first comprehensive volume to compare the sociolinguistic situations of minorities in Russia and in Western Europe. As such, it provides insight into language policies, the ethnolinguistic vitality and the struggle for reversal of language shift, language revitalization and empowerment of minorities in Russia and the European Union. The volume shows that, even though largely unknown to a broader English-reading audience, the linguistic composition of Russia is by no means less diverse than multilingualism in the EU. It is therefore a valuable introduction into the historical backgrounds and current linguistic, social and legal affairs with regard to Russia’s manifold ethnic and linguistic minorities, mirrored on the discussion of recent issues in a number of well-known Western European minority situations.

A Grammar of the Russian Language by W.R. Morfill Pdf

My object has been to give a concise and clear analysis of the word-forms and syntax of the Russian language. In the paradigms of the nouns and verbs I have chiefly followed the arrangement of Miklosich. I have treated the grammatical forms in such a way as to show their relation to the Old Slavonic, known to us by the monuments of its literature which have been preserved.0I have allowed myself occasional reference to other Indo-European languages for purposes of illustration. Great pains have been taken with the ?aspects? of the verbs, perhaps the most interesting feature in the Slavonic forms, and it is hoped that they are made as clear as is possible in a rudimentary work of the present kind.0The prepositions, both in and out of composition, which in Russian - and, indeed, in all the Slavonic languages - exhibit a luxuriance of development, reminding us of ancient Greek, have also been carefully treated.0The accents have formed a laborious part of the work: the Russian do not mark them in their books, and therefore they can only be acquired orally. Not a little curious also is the power which the preposition frequently possesses of attracting to itself the accent of the word which it governs. (from the preface). Re-edition. An Introduction to the Indo-European Languages by Philip Baldi Pdf

This comprehensive linguistic survey of the Indo-European groups synthesizes the vast amount of information contained in the specialized handbooks of the individual stocks. The text begins with an introduction to the concept of the Indo-European language family, the history of its discovery, and the techniques of analysis. The introduction also gives a structural sketch of Proto-Indo-European, the parent language from which the others are descended. Baldi then devotes a chapter to each of the 11 major branches of Indo-European (Italic, Celtic, Indo-Iranian, Greek, Armenian, Albanian, Baltic, Slavic, Germanic, Tocharian, and Anatolian). Each chapter provides an outline of the external history of the branch, its people, dialects, and other relevant history. This outline is followed by a structural sketch of the most important language or languages of the branch (e.g., Old Irish for Celtic, Sanskrit and Avestan for Indo-Iranian, Latin and Osco-Umbrian for Italic). The sketch also contains the phonology, morphology, and syntax of each language. There is lastly a sample text of each language containing both interlinear and free translation. In those branches where there are special issues (e.g., the relation of Italic to Celtic and Baltic to Slavic, or the problem of archaism in Hittite), additional discussions of these issues are provided. Baldi's final chapter gives a brief outline of the "minor" Indo-European languages such as Illyrian, Thracian, Raetic, and Phrygian. Adding further to the usefulness of the book are extensive bibliographies, an up-to-date map showing the geographical distribution of the Indo-European languages throughout the world, and a detailed family tree diagram of the members of each subgroup within the Indo-European language family and their interrelationships.

Cinematic Bodies of Eastern Europe and Russia by Matilda Mroz Pdf

Bringing together a range of theoretical and critical approaches, this edited collection is the first book to examine representations of the body in Eastern European and Russian cinema after the Second World War. Drawing on the history of the region, as well as Western and Eastern scholarship on the body, the book focuses on three areas: the traumatized body, the body as a site of erotic pleasure, and the relationship between the body and history. Critically dissecting the different ideological and aesthetic ways human bodies are framed, The Cinematic Bodies of Eastern Europe and Russia also demonstrates how bodily discourses oscillate between complicity and subversion, and how they shaped individuals and societies both during and after the period of state socialism.

The Languages and Linguistics of Europe by Bernd Kortmann,Johan van der Auwera Pdf

Open publication> The Languages and Linguistics ofEurope: A Comprehensive Guideis part of the multi-volume reference work on the languages and linguistics of the continents of the world. The book supplies profiles of the language families of Europe, including the sign languages. It also discusses the areal typology, paying attention to the Standard Average European, Balkan, Baltic and Mediterranean convergence areas. Separate chapters deal with the old and new minority languages and with non-standard varieties. A major focus is language politics and policies, including discussions of the special status of English, the relation between language and the church, language and the school, and standardization. The history of European linguistics is another focus as is the history of multilingual European 'empires' and their dissolution. The volume is especially geared towards a graduate and advanced undergraduatereadership. It has been designed such that it can be used, as a whole or in parts, as a textbook, the first of its kind, for graduate programmes with a focus on the linguistic (and linguistics) landscape of Europe.

Toward a Typology of European Languages by Johannes Bechert,Giuliano Bernini,Claude Buridant Pdf

The series is a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. General problems are studied from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Conclusions are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. Special emphasis is given to little-known languages, whose analysis may shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics.
