Based on the research and experience of Dr. Bellamy, this definitive reference work, months in the making, is one of the most complete and authoritative evaluations of early care and education made available to the public. This book provides a critical look at welfare reforms and at families who struggle to comply with policy guidelines without compromising the care and development of their young children. Here, in a warm and jargon-free style, a single work offers families all the practical information needed to select the best quality in child care for their young children. Educators and child care officials will find in this work a reservoir of information designed for excellence in early care and education. Policymakers will find this work a priceless source in shaping welfare reforms.

From Neurons to Neighborhoods by National Research Council,Institute of Medicine,Board on Children, Youth, and Families,Committee on Integrating the Science of Early Childhood Development Pdf

How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

This study examines the QRIS developed by Qualistar Early Learning, a nonprofit organization based in Colorado, evaluating how reliable the system's components are, whether the QRIS process helped providers to improve, and whether and how much children benefit from such improvement.

Family Child Care Program Quality Review Instrument by California. State Department of Education Pdf

This program quality review instrument was designed for use in determining the quality of California's family day care programs in terms of seven functional components. These components included: (1) philosophy, goals, and objectives; (2) administration; (3) identification of the child's and family's needs; (4) home environment; (5) parent education and involvement; (6) community resources and involvement; and (7) program evaluation. The instrument specified for each functional component indicators and items which reviewers could check depending on whether the requirements of the functional component had been met. Verification of the presence and effectiveness of an indicator or item was made through documentation, observation, interview, or a combination of these methods. The instrument used was also designed to be used in self-review, as a teaching tool, and as the basis of planning for program improvement. Programs were rated excellent, good, adequate, or inadequate; if rated inadequate, programs must submit an improvement plan within 30 days of the review. (RH)

Choosing Childcare For Dummies by Ann Douglas Pdf

The demand for child-care spaces is huge. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 13 million children under the age of six spend some or all of their day being cared for by someone other than their parents. The child-care shortage is everyone's problem – for parents (whether you work outside the home or not), employers, and the children. The prospect of choosing the right childcare can be overwhelming. Put your mind at ease with Choosing Childcare For Dummies. This reference guide is brimming with practical advice to help you find high-quality childcare for the child in your life – whether he or she is a biological child, stepchild, grandchild, foster child, or the child of your significant other. From figuring out affordability to knowing what to do if you suspect neglect or abuse, Choosing Childcare For Dummies covers it all. Inside the book you'll find out how to Weigh the pros and cons of your various child-care options Determine high quality childcare Evaluate out-of-home childcare Hire a nanny or a relative for in-home care Get guidance on the legal issues of being an employer Conduct a reference check Determine if you need a "nanny cam" Recognize the ten signs that your child-care arrangement is in trouble Ease your child into a new child-care arrangement Find back-up childcare Because the United States has no countrywide child-care “system” in place, we’ve ended up with a patchwork quilt of regulations that don’t quite mesh the way they should. This is why so many child-care programs are exempt from the child-care legislation that’s intended to protect children. The bottom line? You can’t count on anyone else to guarantee your child’s health, safety, and well-being in a particular child-care setting. Like it or not, the buck stops with you. That’s why you owe it to yourself and your child to read books like this one that show you how to be a savvy day-care consumer.

Valuing Quality in Early Childhood Services by Peter Moss,Alan Pence Pdf

`Not only does this book offer a great deal of insight into evaluating early childhood services, it also provides a focal point for those interested in establishing goals, objectives and evaluation criteria for their own early childhood programmes′ - Early Years `Quality′ has become a priority issue for all concerned with early childhood care and education services. Starting from the premise that `quality′ is a relative and dynamic concept based on values and beliefs, Valuing Quality in Early Childhood Services examines how the definitions of quality are established and who is involved in their establishment. The book advocates that the process should involve a range of stakeholder groups, including children, parents, staff, care providers, researchers, employers and the community. A key issue that emerges is the need for new and creative approaches to the development of an inclusionary process in the definitions and attainment of quality care.

Family Child Care Environment Rating Scale (FCCERS-3) by Thelma Harms,Debby Cryer,Richard M. Clifford,Noreen Yazejian Pdf

Building on feedback from the field, as well as current research on supporting young children’s development and learning, the authors have revised and updated the widely used Family Child Care Environment Rating Scale®. FCCERS-3 is the next-generation assessment tool for use in home-based child care programs for children from infancy through school age (birth to age 12). FCCERS-3 focuses on the full range of needs of the wide age-range of children often found in family child care programs. Further, the scale assesses both environmental provisions and provider-child interactions that contribute to children’s learning and development, including language, cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development, as well as concerns for health and safety. FCCERS-3 is appropriate for state- and district-wide QRIS and continuous quality improvement, for provider self-assessment, and as a learning or monitoring tool within networks of family providers. The established reliability and validity of the scale make it particularly useful for research and program evaluation with family child care programs. While the approach to assessing quality and the scoring process remain the same for the new FCCERS-3, users will find the following improvements informed by extensive use of the FCCERS in the field and by the most recent research: Enhanced focus on interactions and the role of the provider. Six new language and literacy Items. A new Item on math experiences. A new approach to scoring based solely on observation of ongoing program activity (3-hour time sample). The elimination of the Parents and Provider subscale and provider interview, freeing up time for observing more actual programming. Improved indicator scaling, providing more precise and useful scores for use in self-improvement and professional development. Reduced emphasis on the number of materials, along with greater emphasis on how materials are used to encourage learning. Suitable for use in inclusive and culturally diverse programs, FCCERS-3 subscales evaluate: Space and Furnishings Personal Care Routines Language and Books Activities Interaction Program Structure For further information, please visit the Environment Rating Scales Website: ers.fpg.unc.edu
