Food in the Arts by Harlan Walker Pdf

A further volume in this series, this year discussing not so much food or its preparation as its portrayal in any number of art forms such as popular music, crime novels, film, theatre, literature, and fine art. There are also some papers which concentrate on the art of food, or art relating to food: an instance is the art of tissue-paper orange wrappers (a recondite but riveting item). My impression, when this subject was first mooted, was that all contributions would revolve around paintings and high arts. I was mistaken, there is a remarkable spread: the arrangement of 18th-century desserts; cookery and the Cuban Santeria religion; drink in 19th-century English fiction; food in film noir; the cook as artist in 18th-century England; architectural food design in France and Italy; popcorn poetry; food and eating in Bronte novels; and much more. These volumes are sometimes indigestible fricassees if swallowed at once, but think of them as platters of oysters - each may contain a pearl. By the finish a bracelet at least, perhaps a necklace, is the consequence.

Eve's Apple by William Lindsey Thomas Pdf

Eve's Apple is the story of how one lady, Eve, contracted and spread the most fatal disease ever known to mankind as an act of her mind and will. The name of this disease is sin. This disease of sin is the root cause of all war, murder, stealing, lies, and every other known form of evil in the world. The result has been the death of every generation of mankind who has ever lived. "But wait a minute," you say. "I believe death is caused by old age or cancer, a heart attack, or some other physical problem or disease and not by some religious belief called sin." This is partly true. But what is the root cause of all known diseases? And if all known diseases result in death, isn't this just another way sin manifests itself? In addition to all these facts, I believe the story of Eve's apple defines the history of the human race. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "There is no such thing as history, only biography." Well, if history is a collection of biographies, or stories, then this story of Eve's apple ranks among the most important of all. The story of Eve's apple began mankind's conflict with a good and evil in our world. This struggle by you and me and the rest of the human race has affected our world and history more than any other challenge in life. How mankind has chosen to struggle with this conflict has shaped the history of our world If the above reasons for Eve's importance to history and your life are not enough, may I suggest one more: contained in this story of Eve is the prophecy of God's answer to Eve's sin, which contains faith, hope, and love.

Eat Live Love Die by Betty Fussell Pdf

Betty Fussell is an inspiring badass. She's not just the award–winning author of numerous books ranging from biography and memoir to cookbooks and food history; not just a winner of the James Beard Foundation's Journalism Award who was inducted into their "Who's Who of American Food and Beverage" in 2009; and not just an extraordinary person whose fifty years' worth of essays on food, travel, and the arts have appeared in scholarly journals, popular magazines and newspapers as varied as The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, Saveur, and Vogue. This is a woman who at eighty–two years old (and despite being half–blind) went deer hunting for the very first time in the Montana foothills with her son, Sam (as described in her 2010 essay for the New York Times Magazine.) She got her deer. This is a woman who declared in a 2005 essay for Vogue that she had to teach herself Latin and German from scratch (on top of teaching herself how to cook) as a young twenty–one year old bride, because "housewifery wasn't enough." Indeed, for Fussell one subject is never enough. Counterpoint is thrilled to be publishing this selected anthology of her diverse essays.

Archeology of Intangible Heritage by Francisco Vaz da Silva Pdf

It is remarkable how often we consider certain constructs in other peoples' worldview to be myths, while in our own case we regard equally arbitrary assumptions as inherent to the nature of things. As every anthropologist knows, one's most cherished cultural assumptions tend to remain implicit; in other words, worldview is largely unconscious. This book explores the possibility of plumbing obscure aspects of one's own culture in order to assess what some might call (regarding other cultures) the mythic underpinnings of worldview. Seven explorations in folklore and ethnography exhume a conceptual heritage that still influences perception, albeit in unconscious ways. This archeology of intangible heritage provides the sort of break in intellectual routine that allows us to look anew at familiar things.

Religion by Michel Serres Pdf

With this profound final work, completed in the days leading up to his death, Michel Serres presents a vivid picture of his thinking about religion—a constant preoccupation since childhood—thereby completing Le Grand Récit, the comprehensive explanation of the world and of humanity to which he devoted the last twenty years of his life. Themes from Serres's earlier writings—energy and information, the role of the media in modern society, the anthropological function of sacrifice, the role of scientific knowledge, the problem of evil—are reinterpreted here in the light of the Old Testament accounts of Isaac and Jonah and a variety of Gospel episodes, including the Three Wise Men of the Epiphany, the Transfiguration, Peter's denying Christ, the Crucifixion, Emmaus, and the Pentecost. Monotheistic religion, Serres argues, resembles mathematical abstraction in its dazzling power to bring together the real and the virtual, the natural and the transcendent; but only in its Christian embodiment is it capable of binding together human beings in such a way that partisan attachments are dissolved and a new era of history, free for once of the lethal repetition of collective violence, can be entered into.

Excelsis Dei by Paul Linke Pdf

The content of this book is about Religion and Physics put into perspective (and Scientology is the ideal word for that conception). Where both deal with the magic of nature, but magic is not tolerated. The triangle in this picture is a sacred symbol about this hidden magic, where strings of energy not only create the triangle, but they are the thriving force behind the unfolding universe of space and time. And all this is possible because the conscious mind depicted as the all seeing-eye (the eye of God) in the heart controls this eternal force.
