Excerpt from Everything for the Fruit-Grower: Price-List, Fall 1900 This is not only a pleasant occupation, but if intelligently and persistently followed, is also a sure road to wealth. If the average farmer would devote from 10 to 20 acres to Nut culture, giving proper attention to it, he would achieve independence in a few years, escaping the ordi nary labor of the farm. We have accounts of single trees paying from $25 to $50, and many cases are noted where an acre clears from $150 to $600 annually. It was a wise man who said* Plant a tree it will be growing while you are sleeping. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Fruit-Growers Guide-Book (Classic Reprint) by E. H. Favor Pdf

Excerpt from The Fruit-Growers Guide-Book The foundation upon which this little book is based is the many letters which reach the office of The Fruit Grower, containing inquiries about many phases of fruit growing. These inquiries come from all parts of the United States and from Canada, and cover almost every phase of horticultural work, although in preparing this book only the general problem of growing the ordinary deciduous orchard fruits has been considered. This problem has. Been considered in a very general way without specific dirce tions for any particular fruit. Where details for a given fruit have been needed, the treatment of the subject has been boiled down to as concise a form as possible. The Practical Fruit Grower (Classic Reprint) by S. T. Maynard Pdf

Excerpt from The Practical Fruit Grower In this age of book-making, a new book should not be urged u]hi the public unless to supply a real need. My excuse for presenting at this time this little volume, is the want, on the part of beginners in the business of fruit culture, and of the common farmer who has not the time nor inclination to study extensive works upon the subject, of a hook that shall he sold at a small price yet cover the entire field of fruit cultivation, in all its details, in a plain and practical manner. The limits of the present work, however, will not allow of an extended discussion as to the merits of the many methods of growth and cultivation, and I have aimed to give only such as are largely practiced by the most successful fruit growers. Hove and Portslade in the Great War by Judy Middleton Pdf

How the experience of war impacted on the town, from the initial enthusiasm for sorting out the German kaiser in time for Christmas 1914, to the gradual realization of the enormity of human sacrifice the families of Hove and Portslade were committed to as the war stretched out over the next four years. A record of the growing disillusion of the people, their tragedies and hardships and a determination to see it through. The Great War affected everyone. At home there were wounded soldiers in military hospitals, refugees from Belgium and later on German prisoners of war. There were food and fuel shortages and disruption to schooling. The role of women changed dramatically and they undertook a variety of work undreamed of in peacetime. Meanwhile, men serving in the armed forces were scattered far and wide. Extracts from contemporary letters reveal their heroism and give insights into what it was like under battle conditions. As featured on Radio Reverb.

Bananas and Business by Marcelo Bucheli Pdf

For well over a century, the United Fruit Company (UFCO) has been the most vilified multinational corporation operating in Latin America. Criticism of the UFCO has been widespread, ranging from politicians to consumer activists, and from labor leaders to historians, all portraying it as an overwhelmingly powerful corporation that shaped and often exploited its host countries. In this first history of the UFCO in Colombia, Marcelo Bucheli argues that the UFCO's image as an all-powerful force in determining national politics needs to be reconsidered. Using a previously unexplored source—the internal archives of Colombia's UFCO operation—Bucheli reveals that before 1930, the UFCO worked alongside a business-friendly government that granted it generous concessions and repressed labor unionism. After 1930, however, the country experienced dramatic transformations including growing nationalism, a stronger labor movement, and increasing demands by local elites for higher stakes in the banana export business. In response to these circumstances, the company abandoned production, selling its plantations (and labor conflicts) to local growers, while transforming itself into a marketing company. The shift was endorsed by the company's shareholders and financial analysts, who preferred lower profits with lower risks, and came at a time in which the demand for bananas was decreasing in America. Importantly, Bucheli shows that the effect of foreign direct investment was not unidirectional. Instead, the agency of local actors affected corporate strategy, just as the UFCO also transformed local politics and society.
