Oxford Textbook of Cancer in Children by Hubert N. Caron,Andrea Biondi,Tom Boterberg,François Doz Pdf

The outcome for children with cancer has shown enormous improvement since the first edition of this book was published in 1975. In economically privileged countries, overall survival rates have now reached 80% at five years from diagnosis, and most of these young people will become long term survivors. The Oxford Textbook of Cancer in Children offers state-of-the-art descriptions of the approach needed for the optimal management of children with cancer, and guidance on current treatments available due to the advances made over the past decade. This seventh edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, including brand new chapters on cancer immunotherapy in children, and cancer in adolescents and young adults, plus expanded treatment of tumours of the brain and central nervous system. The book primarily provides clear and up-to-date clinical guidance for use in treatment settings whilst offering a useful background to the biology of individual tumour types and the history of the development of specific treatments. With an international and multi-disciplined authorship comprising of paediatric oncologists, surgeons, radiotherapists, imaging specialists, psychologists, nurses, and many others, the text illustrates how the paediatric oncology community works globally and collaboratively in order to drive forward new therapies, build our knowledge of these diseases, and achieve the common aim of curing childhood cancer. In this new edition, Professors Biondi and Caron have been joined by Professor François Doz, who has a distinguished international reputation, particularly in the treatment of childhood brain tumours and retinoblastoma, as well as early drug development. They have also been joined by Professor Tom Boterberg, a world renowned radio-oncologist for children with cancer. This book will be of value to paediatric oncologists, trainee paediatric oncologists, paediatric haematologists, and other professionals working in paediatric oncology: nurses, AHPs, surgeons, and clinical oncologists.

Perspectives in Paediatric Oncology Nursing by Faith Gibson,Louise Soanes,Beth Sepion Pdf

Originally emanating from presentations at an international conference, this text brings together research and practice development from three perspectives: practice, management and education. Within these three sections the book presents a series of chapters written mainly by practitioners, but some in collaboration with academics. At the end of each section there is a commentary by a practitioner, manager or researcher, which aims to offer a helpful critique on the papers in their section, guiding the reader to consider other areas of research and practice development. At a time when practitioners are being called to produce and use evidence in their practice, this book should offer a valuable contribution to that evidence base.

Oxford Textbook of Cancer Biology by Francesco Pezzella,Mahvash Tavassoli,David Kerr Pdf

The study of the biology of tumours has grown to become markedly interdisciplinary, involving chemists, statisticians, epidemiologists, mathematicians, bioinformaticians, and computer scientists alongside biologists, geneticists, and clinicians. The Oxford Textbook of Cancer Biology brings together the most up-to-date developments from different branches of research into one coherent volume, providing a comprehensive and current account of this rapidly evolving field. Structured in eight sections, the book starts with a review of the development and biology of multi-cellular organisms, how they maintain a healthy homeostasis in an individual, and a description of the molecular basis of cancer development. The book then illustrates, as once cells become neoplastic, their signalling network is altered and pathological behaviour follows. It explores the changes that cancer cells can induce in nearby normal tissue, the new relationship established between them and the stroma, and the interaction between the immune system and tumour growth. The authors illustrate the contribution provided by high throughput techniques to map cancer at different levels, from genomic sequencing to cellular metabolic functions, and how information technology, with its vast amounts of data, is integrated with traditional cell biology to provide a global view of the disease. The effect of the different types of treatments on the biology of the neoplastic cells are explored to understand on the one side, why some treatments succeed, and on the other, how they can affect the biology of resistant and recurrent disease. The book concludes by summarizing what we know to date about cancer, and in what direction our understanding of cancer is moving. Edited by leading authorities in the field with an international team of contributors, this book is an essential resource for scholars and professionals working in the wide variety of sub-disciplines that make up today's cancer research and treatment community. It is written not only for consultation, but also for easy cover-to-cover reading.

This new textbook has an international authorship and is a practical, up-to-date resource for clinicians responsible for the care of children with oncologic and malignant hematologic disease. It is specifically designed for practicing oncologists and hematologists, pediatricians with an interest in childhood cancer and trainees seeking a systematic approach to these disorders. This new textbook has an emphasis on the visual presentation and ease of reading of contemporary and comprehensive information for children’s cancers and contains detailed tables, fact boxes and illustrations. The textbook begins with an introduction to the general principles of the scientific foundation and treatment of childhood cancers and hematological malignancies. Separate sections are then devoted to descriptions of central nervous system tumors, hematological malignancies and solid tumors of childhood which encompass epidemiology, cellular and molecular biology, cancer genetics, immunology, pharmacology and the findings of clinical trials. For each area of science covered, key original references and reviews are highlighted to direct further reading. Diagnostic, biological, and therapeutic issues are integrated into each tumor-specific chapter, with evidence supporting the current rationales for risk stratification and the development of novel therapies. A final section then explores supportive care, palliative care, late effects considerations and psychosocial issues as relate to children’s cancer.

Pediatric Oncology by Ka Wah Chan,Richard B. Raney, Jr. Pdf

Childhood cancer was almost always fatal before 1970. Today, 80% of ch- dren diagnosed with cancer will survive at least 5 years; 70% will be cured. However, cancer continues to be the leading cause of nonaccident-related deaths in children. More children die each year from cancer than from c- tic ?brosis, diabetes, asthma, AIDS, and congenital abnormalities combined. Nine children die from cancer every school day. Despite the fact that pediatric cancers account for only a small p- centage of the total cancer burden, more effective therapies are needed to improve mortality rates in children. Therefore, our research priority must be the development of new agents and new therapies for childhood cancer. M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has been caring for children with c- cer since its doors opened over 60 years ago. This institution has been home to several research and clinical pioneers whose innovative work has in?uenced and shaped the practice of pediatric oncology throughout the world. Notably, Drs. Wataru W. Sutow, Donald Pinkel, and Norman Jaffe have been credited with introducing curative therapies for children with leukemia and solid tumors. Cancer treatment involves far more than administering chemoth- apy and surgically excising tumors. It requires a multidisciplinary - proach to patient management, particularly in the treatment of solid - mors, which pose the biggest challenge in cancer care today. Surgery and radiotherapy as well as radiographic and pathologic assessments of response are critical factors in the treatment of children with cancer.
