In our current era of holy terror, passionate faith has come to seem like a present danger. Writers such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens have been happy to throw the baby out with the bathwater and declare that the danger is in religion itself. God, Hitchens writes, is not great. But man, according to George E. Vaillant, M.D., is great. In Spiritual Evolution, Dr. Vaillant lays out a brilliant defense not of organized religion but of man’s inherent spirituality. Our spirituality, he shows, resides in our uniquely human brain design and in our innate capacity for emotions like love, hope, joy, forgiveness, and compassion, which are selected for by evolution and located in a different part of the brain than dogmatic religious belief. Evolution has made us spiritual creatures over time, he argues, and we are destined to become even more so. Spiritual Evolution makes the scientific case for spirituality as a positive force in human evolution, and he predicts for our species an even more loving future. Vaillant traces this positive force in three different kinds of “evolution”: the natural selection of genes over millennia, of course, but also the cultural evolution within recorded history of ideas about the value of human life, and the development of spirituality within the lifetime of each individual. For thirty-five years, Dr. Vaillant directed Harvard’s famous longitudinal study of adult development, which has followed hundreds of men over seven decades of life. The study has yielded important insights into human spirituality, and Dr. Vaillant has drawn on these and on a range of psychological research, behavioral studies, and neuroscience, and on history, anecdote, and quotation to produce a book that is at once a work of scientific argument and a lyrical meditation on what it means to be human. Spiritual Evolution is a life’s work, and it will restore our belief in faith as an essential human striving.

The Presence of the Infinite by Steve McIntosh Pdf
The Presence of the Infinite sheds new light on the important subject of spiritual experience. Using the emerging insights of evolutionary spirituality, integral philosopher Steve McIntosh enlarges readers’ capacity to have spiritual experience more abundantly and use it more effectively to improve their lives and the world around them. The Presence of the Infinite starts by providing a timely cultural analysis and critique of the various forms of spirituality that are vying for influence in contemporary American society. Building on this context, McIntosh shows how evolutionary spirituality overcomes the limitations of religious, secular, and New Age spirituality by better harmonizing science and spirit. Evolutionary spirituality’s transcendent potential is found in its deepening realization of the essentially spiritual qualities of beauty, truth, and goodness. McIntosh then uses evolutionary spirituality’s enlarged understanding of what spiritual experience is and how it works to consider the question of ultimate reality. This leads to an examination of conflicting ideas that regard spirit as either formless and nondual, or as loving and creative. By working to harmonize and integrate these alternative conceptions of ultimate reality, McIntosh shows how evolutionary spirituality can achieve a synthesis of nondual and theistic teachings of truth that can produce a spiritual renaissance in America and beyond. The Presence of the Infinite is destined to become a definitive text in the exciting new field of evolutionary spirituality.
Seven Days of Spiritual Evolution by E. Kent Rogers Pdf
How are we to reconcile a literal reading of the Creation story in the Bible with what science tells us of how the universe and humankind came to be? Based on the ideas of Emanuel Swedenborg, E. Kent Rogers's Seven Days of Spiritual Evolution points the way to a deeper symbolic meaning hidden within the narrative of Genesis 1. Using his experience as a mental health counselor and spiritual practitioner, he develops practical techniques for spiritual growth on our own personal journey from the darkness to the light.

Is- Being - The Spiritual Evolution, illuminates the mystery and transformative potential of the evolving soul. It is a 'why to' and 'how to' of this beautiful and eternal phenomenon and explains why it is with urgency that we work towards it today. This evolution has been explored many times before, but this book strips the process back to its bones, so that we can recognise the echoes of it wherever we look, and notice the commonality, rather than the differences, between these explanations. With a refreshing vocabulary, new understanding and unique perspective, it brings clarity, illumination and accessibility to everyone. The book tries to help the reader to develop an experiential relationship with the Mystery beyond the borders of all faiths and spiritual practices, which so many of us knowingly or unknowingly seek. It points us towards this Mystery of that which 'Is', using the universal language of energy and Love. It is for the tentative beginners, the newly awakened and the seasoned travellers of all spiritual, faith and personal journeys; yes, for everyone; including people just like you... Is- Being - The Spiritual Evolution provides: *A link between religious, spiritual and secular communities. *Explains that the link between them all is love, and the cord of light to that which 'Is'; beyond, and within, any religious definition and spiritual practice. *Explains the energetic construction of the created-self, spirit-self, and soul-self and how this connects to and interacts energetically to All. *Explains how the soul evolves and why this is crucial to the evolution of humanity to create a new and beautiful world through love. Our spiritual life is a unique journey to the infinite. It is like climbing to the top of the hill where we discover our with the infinite, and with all. But our starting points at the bottom of the hill are different and unique. The way we experience the infinite, which Mel calls IS-BEING, is unique. In this book Mel describes her own unique journey and her own unique experience and thus invites everyone to make his or her own unique journey and unique experience of IS-BEING. It is a very original, creative and inspiring journey and discovery, described with almost humility and love. I wish and hope that everyone who reads this book may be inspired to take his or her spiritual journey and discover the infinite in a unique way. Br. Nikki Patillo speaks to angels. And, the angels speak to Nikki. In fact, they have hasked her to speak to you. That message from the angels is found in this book. Elements of the message from the angels include: - We are not humans on a spiritual journey, but are spiritual beings on a human journey. - We are in the midst of a spiritual evolution in which our auras and vibrational frequencies are changing for the better. - Life is often filled with pain. Embrace the pain. It is what binds us to one another, helps us to grow, and teaches us spiritual lessons. In a sense, this could be called the Angels' Manifesto. Their message here is everything each of us needs to know about ascension, reincarnation, karma, living in abundance, manifesting our dreams, and waking up. It is a cosmic manifesto filled with practical insights for daily living and cosmic truth for the next evolutionary leap.
THE EMERGENCE OF SOUL, MEANING AND IMMORTALITY The grand religious stories that gave meaning to life and death in the past have crumbled under sceptical scrutiny. The dominant mainstream philosophy is now scientific objectivism, which describes a universe that exists for no reason and a life that ends in oblivion. Pioneering philosopher Tim Freke addresses the "soul crisis" in modern culture that has arisen from lack of meaning. He offers an intelligent "spiritual" perspective on life and death to help us make sense of a paradoxical world, which is sometimes bleak and banal, but also can be magical and full of significance. He presents a revolutionary paradigm shift in our understanding of reality that integrates the deepest insights of science and spirituality to create a new model of human identity, which makes the idea of the immortal soul intellectually credible. He explores the process of evolution, not as blind chance, but as the momentous story of the self-realising universe. The development of the material world has led to the emergence of "psyche" or "soul," which you are experiencing right now as a stream of thoughts and images that don't exist in space and aren't made of matter. We are not insignificant specks in a vast purposeless cosmos. We are significant participants in the magnificent and meaningful story of soul. The universe is coming to know itself through each one of us and this process doesn't end at death, because the evolution of soul has also been the evolution of immortality.

Excerpt from Evolution and Spiritual Life Comparatively little detailed consideration is given in the present book to the conclusions of particular schools of philosophy, except where a reference to one system or another has seemed desirable for the purpose of illustrating a definite point. William James justly complains that The abuse of technicality is seen in the infrequency with which, in philosophical literature, metaphysical questions are discussed directly on their own merits. Almost always they are handled, as if through a heavy woollen curtain, the veil of pre vious philosophers' opinions. Alternatives are wrapped in proper names, as if it were indecent for a truth to go naked. I have tried, rather, to work from point to point, handling everything with bare fingers, and only discovering by touch the shape of each lump of fact and its contacts with the next. And the shapes and contacts of some were unexpected. But clothes are ornamental; and these ornaments we have come to consider essential to decency. There fore, both for the sake of our ideas of what is suitable, and to escape arrest by the police who guard our thoughts, I have decked the body of my work with more or less of the usual habiliments 1. Evolution and Spiritual Life by Stewart A. McDowall Pdf
Excerpt from Evolution and Spiritual Life Many laymen feel that the humanity of a doctor is generally, though by no means always, richer than the humanity of a clergyman. Not a few courageously proclaim the fact; greatly to the discomfort, and perhaps the benefit, of the clergy. And as we mentally run through the long roll of literary doctors, beginning with Luke the Beloved Physician, noting the names of Sir Thomas Browne, Dr John Brown, Dr Oliver Wendell Holmes, and many more, till we reach contemporary writers like Douglas White and the author of The Corner of Harley Street, we cannot but agree that the laymen have a good deal of justice on their side. And our personal experience teaches us the same. The reason of this is not far to seek. The humanity of the doctor is richer than the humanity of the parson because he knows so much more about the mechanism in which the soul lives. Very few doctors fall into the mistake of thinking they have to talk to, and counsel, a mechanism without a soul; while "quite a many" clergymen talk to a soul as if it had not got a mechanism tied on to it.
