An intellectual memoir by the author of the acclaimed Imagined Communities Born in China, Benedict Anderson spent his childhood in California and Ireland, was educated in England and finally found a home at Cornell University, where he immersed himself in the growing field of Southeast Asian studies. The Roman Empire had a rich and multifaceted visual culture, which was often variegated due to the sprawling geography of its provinces. His isolation from major centers of Chicano culture led him to search for self-identity through his art. The proceedings of the conference Beyond Boundaries. Conceptualizing Netherlandish Prints have now been published.00The conference approached Netherlandish printmaking as a phenomenon of early modern art, a highly mobile medium operating on the principles of aesthetic, social and culturological communication. In particular, it explored the multilayered significance of Netherlandish printed art from two points of view: the intermedial (i.e. within the common field of fine arts) and the social, where investigating the meaning of a print involves a much broader perspective.
Beyond Boundaries is a survey of the best of California photography over the past five years. The sixty-five artists represented here have been drawn from a pool of over 300 photographers, nominated by museum curators, gallery directors, art publishers and critics, specialists at small non-profit organizations and major metropolitan museums, working across the state. The only parameter was that the artist selected needed to be living in California at the time. Developed over a year of meeting with the artists involved, Beyond Boundaires is arranged as a loosely thematic collage which echoes the links between the artists.
