It feems that his wife, to whom he appears to have been tenderly attached, had been dangeroufly ill, but was now recovering. During her fickness he had been from home, labor ing among the Indians; and while abfent, he wrote this little treatife in the form of a letter to her, his object being simply to promote her fpiritual improvement. At the requeft of his friends, if was publifhed in London; and a dedication was prefixed to it, addrefl'ed to Lady Vane the Younger.
