Students with a basic English proficiency struggle to benefit from the wealth of English language theological resources. This textbook bridges the gap between intermediate English and theological English by providing an overview of evangelical Christian doctrine that couples language instruction with theological education. The reading passages and learning activities, which focus upon particular doctrinal topics, guide students through content designed to grow their theological English proficiency. Discipline-specific language is highlighted in each chapter, and the range of tasks engages learners in critical thinking and application. As a result, students will improve their ability to interact with a much greater range of theological materials, while progressing in their English language skills.

Discovering Indigenous Lands by Robert J. Miller,Jacinta Ruru,Larissa Behrendt,Tracey Lindberg Pdf

This book presents new material and shines fresh light on the under-explored historical and legal evidence about the use of the doctrine of discovery in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. North America, New Zealand and Australia were colonised by England under an international legal principle that is known today as the doctrine of discovery. When Europeans set out to explore and exploit new lands in the fifteenth through to the twentieth centuries, they justified their sovereign and property claims over these territories and the indigenous peoples with the discovery doctrine. This legal principle was justified by religious and ethnocentric ideas of European and Christian superiority over the other cultures, religions, and races of the world. The doctrine provided that newly-arrived Europeans automatically acquired property rights in the lands of indigenous peoples and gained political and commercial rights over the inhabitants. The English colonial governments and colonists in North America, New Zealand and Australia all utilised this doctrine, and still use it today to assert legal rights to indigenous lands and to assert control over indigenous peoples. Written by indigenous legal academics - an American Indian from the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, a New Zealand Maori (Ngati Rawkawa and Ngai Te Rangi), an Indigenous Australian, and a Cree (Neheyiwak) in the country now known as Canada, Discovering Indigenous Lands provides a unique insight into the insidious historical and contemporary application of the doctrine of discovery.

Christian Doctrine by Mike Higton Pdf

Providing an accessible one-volume guide to Christian doctrine, this is a thorough re-write of the first edition. Since the original was published, many students and teachers of doctrine, in theological colleges and beyond, have been learning to take more seriously the global context of their work, and to recognise the difference made by facets of their identities and social locations like race, class, gender, and disability. In this edition, Mike Higton seeks to do justice to this learning, and invites readers to understand doctrine as an unfinished conversation between many different voices. Fully updated for clarity and yet retaining its role as a rigorous introduction to its subject, the book includes new ‘interruptions’, which introduce voices that question the book’s arguments and offer new directions for readers to pursue.

Scripture, the Genesis of Doctrine by Frances M. Young Pdf

How did we get from Scripture to creed? Historical criticism has revealed a gap between Scripture and the mainstream doctrines that define Christianity today. Not the least of these are the Trinity and two natures of Christ—widely accepted since the fifth century, but unfounded in historical readings of Scripture. How did these dogmas become so integral to the faith in the first place? Frances M. Young tackles this monumental question in a culmination of decades of biblical and patristic research. The first of two volumes exploring the emergence of doctrine in the early church, Scripture, the Genesis of Doctrine reframes the relationship between Scripture and doctrine according to the intellectual context of the first few centuries CE. Young situates the early Christians’ biblical hermeneutic within the context of Greco-Roman learning without espousing historical relativism. Ultimately, Young argues that the scriptural canon and the Rule of Faith emerged concurrently in the early Church, and both were received as apostolic. The perceived gap between the two may in fact be the product of our modern assumptions rather than an ancient reality. Nuanced and ecumenical, Scripture, the Genesis of Doctrine explores early Christians’ biblical hermeneutic, with an eye toward how we interpret the bible today. Young’s magisterial study holds widespread implications for not only patristics but also exegesis and systematic theology.

Rule and Order Dutch Planning Doctrine in the Twentieth Century by A. Faludi,A.J. van der Valk Pdf

This book is about an art in which the Netherlands excels: strategic planning. Foreign observers will need little convincing of the merits of Dutch planning. They will want to know whether routine explanations (small country, industrious, disciplined people hardened by the perennial fight against the sea) hold any water, and they will want to know where to look for the bag of tricks of Dutch planners. Dutch readers need to be convinced first that planning in the Netherlands is indeed effective before contemplating how this has come about. Our message for both is that, to the extent that Dutch planners do live in what others are inclined to see as a planners' paradise, it is a paradise carefully constructed and maintained by the planners themselves. This smacks of Bernard Shaw describing a profession as a conspiracy against laity. However, all knowledge and all technologies are 'socially constructed', meaning that they are the products of people or groups pursuing often conflicting aims and coming to arrangements about what is to pass as 'true' and 'good'. So this takes away the odium of Dutch planners having their own agenda. Positioning ourselves We are in the business of interpreting Dutch planning, and at the same time committed to improving it. This makes us part of the situation which we describe. This situation is characterized by the existence of two divergent traditions, urban design and the social-science discipline called 'planologie'.

Christian Doctrine and the Grammar of Difference by Janice McRandal Pdf

Rees argues that the doctrinal narrative of creation, fall, and redemption provides resources to resolve the theological impasse of difference in contemporary feminist theology. The divine economy reveals a God who enters into history and destabilizes fixed binaries and oppressive categories. As created subjects, we are sustained, affirmed, and drawn back into the Triune life, patterns present in liturgy, prayer, and practices of contemplation. The grammar of Christian faith cannot ultimately be uncovered except in prayer, opened beyond itself to a source of life and giving.

The Life of Christian Doctrine by Mike Higton Pdf

The lives of Christian churches are shaped by doctrinal theology. That is, they are shaped by practices in which ideas about God and God's ways with the world are developed, discussed and deployed. This book explores those practices, and asks why they matter for communities seeking to follow Jesus. Taking the example of the Church of England, this book highlights the embodied, affective and located reality of all doctrinal practices – and the biases and exclusions that mar them. It argues that doctrinal theology can in principle help the church know God better, even though doctrinal theologians do not know God better than their fellow believers. It claims that it can help the church to hear in Scripture challenges to its life, including to its doctrinal theology. It suggests that doctrinal disagreement is inevitable, but that a better quality of doctrinal disagreement is possible. And, finally, it argues that, by encouraging attention to voices that have previously been ignored, doctrinal theology can foster the ongoing discovery of God's surprising work.

Discovering the Apostle's Doctrine by James F. Disbrow Pdf

Discovering the Apostles Doctrine is sure to inflame the Christian community and will be considered a very controversial read by those who study Gods word with an inflexible understanding of Christian theology. Once the pages of this book and the minds of the readers are opened the comments of the author intertwined with biblical truth of scripture will bring a new enlightenment and a deeper understanding of Gods will. In Christendom over the last 2 millenniums there has been a departure from the true gospel of Jesus Christ as was presented by his apostles. In fact, the doctrines that were expressly taught by the apostles of Jesus Christ and that are presented in the New Testament are for the most part not followed by Christendom today. This book will bring the readers attention to the many warnings, which God has given mankind through his prophets, the apostles and His son Jesus Christ. These warnings were given that mankind then and now might be made aware that there exists in the world false prophets, wolves in sheeps clothing, false Christs, traditions of men and doctrines of devils with one purpose, to destroy mans hope of any relationship with God! In the spirit of the Watchman on the Wall it has been the writers effort to not only warn the reader but to give biblical direction to the saving grace that is found in Jesus Christ alone. This book will be the cause of much debate and will be considered heretical in many corners of Christendom. However, a closer look at the scriptures and with the help of the authors comments the reader will uncover the fundamental truths of God and embrace the eternal hope that is in Jesus Christ. Jesus tells us that it is the broad way that will lead humanity to destruction and unfortunately many people will follow that path. Broadway is known for its bright lights, its glamour, excitement and its many opportunities to indulgence ones self. The broad way is also the way of deception, distraction, discouragement, distruction and death. Jesus further explained that the road or pathway to eternal life is a narrow passage and few people will find it. It is the writers prayer that this book will provoke the reader to study their bible with a receptive mind comparing scripture with scripture. Jesus died for everyone of us but the bible tells us that heaven itself is not for everyone. Revelation 21:27 states that there shall in no wise enter into the city of God any thing that defiles, neither those who have an abdominal life style or those who are filled with deception (liars), however those who have believed the truth of the scriptures will have found eternal life and their new home. A person must be born in to the family of God through faith in Jesus Christ. The apostles of Jesus have given us the road map to eternal life through their writings found in Gods word. Discovering the Apostles Doctrine will reassure the reader that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life! Every professing Christian and every soul looking for Gods truth needs to read this book with their Bible at least once! This book is not fiction and it is not meant to be read for entertainment. This book is a sincere look into the word of God as it was brought to humanity by Gods prophets and the apostles of Jesus. This book is meant to help the reader think, pray and secure their eternal salvation!

This book, first published in 1989, analyses Western and Soviet perceptions of each other’s military thoughts and doctrines, a key part of the Cold War, where both sides planned to both win a possible conflict, and to avoid one. The work demonstrates that both East and West made judgments about each other’s military profile on the basis of political preconceptions.
