James, 1-2 Peter, 1-3 John, Jude by Gerald L. Bray,Thomas C. Oden Pdf

Christianity Today Award of Merit winner Because the Catholic Epistles focus on orthodox faith and morals, the Fathers drew on them as a means of defense against the rising challenge of heretics. Many of the Fathers saw in these letters anticipatory attacks on Marcion and strong defenses against the Arians. They did so quite naturally because in their view truth was eternal and deviations from it had existed from the beginning. Above all, the Fathers found in the Catholic Epistles a manual for spiritual warfare, counsel for the faithful in the cosmic struggle between good and evil. In them was sound instruction in the ways of self-sacrifice, generosity, and humility, through which the cosmic forces could be defeated. Allusions to these letters go back as far as Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian, but the first commentary derives from Clement of Alexandria. Didymus the Blind was the next significant Greek-speaking commentator, though his commentary is fully extant only in Latin translation. Many of the comments from the early centuries have been passed on to us through Latin catenae, or chain commentaries, in which a later commentator collected comments from a variety of sources and chained them together in a fashion much like that of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture in English. Among Latin commentators on these letters, pride of place must be given to Bede the Venerable. This volume opens up a treasure house of ancient wisdom that allows these faithful witnesses, some appearing here in English translation for the first time, to speak with eloquence and intellectual acumen to the church today.

Reading the Epistles of James, Peter, John & Jude as Scripture by David Nienhuis,Robert W. Wall Pdf

Through a detailed examination of the historical shaping and final canonical shape of seven oft-neglected New Testament letters, Reading the Epistles of James, Peter, John, and Jude as Scripture introduces readers to the historical, literary, and theological integrity of this indispensable apostolic witness. While most scholars today interpret biblical texts in terms of their individual historical points of composition, David Nienhuis and Robert Wall argue that a theological approach to this part of Scripture is better served by attending to these texts' historical point of canonization -- those key moments in the ancient church's life when apostolic writings were grouped together to maximize the Spirit's communication of the apostolic rule of faith to believers everywhere. Reading the Epistles of James, Peter, John, and Jude as Scripture is the only treatment of the Catholic Epistles that approaches these seven letters as an intentionally designed and theologically coherent canonical collection.

The Living Faith Bible Commentary by Thomas Holland Pdf

The Living Faith Bible Commentary series combines a practical, commonsense approach to scripture with the tools to develop a deeper understanding of God's word. Perfect for personal devotion, classroom teaching or group discussion, the commentary series includes a basic introduction to each New Testament book, the full text of the scripture that is being studied, the spiritual insights and applications of each verse, and group discussion questions at the conclusion of each chapter. For the advanced student of scripture, endnotes include a workable apparatus for textual variants, embellishment of various Greek words, optional readings found in early English and contemporary versions, and further elaboration of some basic doctrinal truths. The General Epistles provide a wealth of wisdom and truth for believers today. In these letters, we find the meaning of faith in action in the book of James, the promise of victory over suffering in 1 and 2 Peter, a warning against false teachers and doctrines in 1 John and Jude, the commandment to love one another in 2 John and the meaning of hospitality and faithfulness in 3 John. Faith truly comes alive by the study and application of these brief yet meaningful books.

First and Second Peter, James, and Jude by Pheme Perkins Pdf

First and Second Peter, James, and Jude have existed on the edges of the canon throughout the centuries. In this volume, Pheme Perkins casts light on these often neglected writings, ably demonstrating that they have, in fact, much to offer to today's readers. The epistles are more than a compilation of traditional material. They are concerned with very specific and concrete issues facing the early Christian communities and offer a counterpoint to the letters of Paul. They deal with issues such as how to conduct oneself with others, how to live in a non-Christian world, and how to "shepherd the flock of God", as well as with theological issues such as the early Christian understanding of God, the relationship between faith and works, prayer, and suffering. Teachers, preachers, and others will find much intriguing material here as they rediscover the world of the first Christians through these letters.
