Extended Abstracts Spring 2014 by Montserrat Corbera,Josep Maria Cors,Jaume Llibre,Andrei Korobeinikov Pdf

The two parts of the present volume contain extended conference abstracts corresponding to selected talks given by participants at the "Conference on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics 2014" (HAMSYS2014) (15 abstracts) and at the "Workshop on Virus Dynamics and Evolution" (12 abstracts), both held at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) in Barcelona from June 2nd to 6th, 2014, and from June 23th to 27th, 2014, respectively. Most of them are brief articles, containing preliminary presentations of new results not yet published in regular research journals. The articles are the result of a direct collaboration between active researchers in the area after working in a dynamic and productive atmosphere. The first part is about Central Configurations, Periodic Orbits and Hamiltonian Systems with applications to Celestial Mechanics – a very modern and active field of research. The second part is dedicated to mathematical methods applied to viral dynamics and evolution. Mathematical modelling of biological evolution currently attracts the interest of both mathematicians and biologists. This material offers a variety of new exciting problems to mathematicians and reasonably inexpensive mathematical methods to evolutionary biologists. It will be of scientific interest to both communities. The book is intended for established researchers, as well as for PhD and postdoctoral students who want to learn more about the latest advances in these highly active areas of research.

Extended Abstracts Spring 2013 by Álvaro Corral,Anna Deluca,Francesc Font-Clos,Pilar Guerrero,Andrei Korobeinikov,Francesco Massucci Pdf

The two parts of this volume feature seventeen and six extended conference abstracts corresponding to selected talks given by participants at "Joint CRM-Imperial College Workshop in Complex Systems" and "Emergence, Spread and Control of Infectious Diseases" respectively, both held at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica in Barcelona in spring 2013. Most of them are short articles giving preliminary presentations of new results not yet published in regular research journals. The articles are the result from a direct collaboration among active researchers in the area after working in a dynamic and productive atmosphere. Almost everything that is interesting and important for society is complex; here, examples scattered across science are presented in order to illustrate the cross-disciplinary richness of state-of-the-art complex systems research: fracture avalanches and rain showers that mimic earthquakes; highly organized graphs that account for processes in neural networks, metabolic networks, food webs, or language; models for DNA dynamics; or statistical methods to test complexity in the form of structure along many different scales. The mathematics is put to work for the modeling of the real system, and the models are kept at a minimum level to allow the understanding of the essentials of the real system. The book is intended for established researchers, as well as for PhD and postdoc students who wish to learn more about the latest advances in these active areas of research.

This book includes 33 expanded abstracts of selected talks given at the two workshops "Homological Bonds Between Commutative Algebra and Representation Theory" and "Brave New Algebra: Opening Perspectives," and the conference "Opening Perspectives in Algebra, Representations, and Topology," held at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) in Barcelona between January and June 2015. These activities were part of the one-semester intensive research program "Interactions Between Representation Theory, Algebraic Topology and Commutative Algebra (IRTATCA)." Most of the abstracts present preliminary versions of not-yet published results and cover a large number of topics (including commutative and non commutative algebra, algebraic topology, singularity theory, triangulated categories, representation theory) overlapping with homological methods. This comprehensive book is a valuable resource for the community of researchers interested in homological algebra in a broad sense, and those curious to learn the latest developments in the area. It appeals to established researchers as well as PhD and postdoctoral students who want to learn more about the latest advances in these highly active fields of research.

Physics and Technology of Crystalline Oxide Semiconductor CAAC-IGZO by Noboru Kimizuka,Shunpei Yamazaki Pdf

Electronic devices based on oxide semiconductors are the focus of much attention, with crystalline materials generating huge commercial success. Indium–gallium–zinc oxide (IGZO) transistors have a higher mobility than amorphous silicon transistors, and an extremely low off-state current. C-axis aligned crystalline (CAAC) IGZO enables aggressive down-scaling, high reliability, and process simplification of transistors in displays and LSI devices. This original book introduces the CAAC-IGZO structure, and describes the physics and technology of this new class of oxide materials. It explains the crystallographic classification and characteristics of crystalline oxide semiconductors, their crystallographic characteristics and physical properties, and how this unique material has made a major contribution to the field of oxide semiconductor thin films. Two further books in this series describe applications of CAAC-IGZO in flat-panel displays and LSI devices. Key features: Introduces the unique and revolutionary, yet relatively unknown crystalline oxide semiconductor CAAC-IGZO Presents crystallographic overviews of IGZO and related compounds. Offers an in-depth understanding of CAAC-IGZO. Explains the fabrication method of CAAC-IGZO thin films. Presents the physical properties and latest data to support high-reliability crystalline IGZO based on hands-on experience. Describes the manufacturing process the CAAC-IGZO transistors and introduces the device application using CAAC-IGZO.

An Introduction to Piecewise Smooth Dynamics by Paul Glendinning,Mike R. Jeffrey Pdf

This book is aimed at mathematicians, scientists, and engineers, studying models that involve a discontinuity, or studying the theory of nonsmooth systems for its own sake. It is divided in two complementary courses: piecewise smooth flows and maps, respectively. Starting from well known theoretical results, the authors bring the reader into the latest challenges in the field, going through stability analysis, bifurcation, singularities, decomposition theorems and an introduction to kneading theory. Both courses contain many examples which illustrate the theoretical concepts that are introduced.

A Network-Based Approach to Cell Metabolism by Oriol Güell Pdf

This thesis uses a systems-level approach to study the cellular metabolism, unveiling new mechanisms and responses that were impossible to reach with traditional reductionists procedures. The results reported here have a potential application in areas like metabolic engineering and disease treatment. They could also be used in determining the accuracy of the gene essentiality of new genome-scale reconstructions. Different methods and techniques, within the contexts of Systems Biology and the field known as Complex Networks Analysis have been applied in this work to show different features of the robustness of metabolic networks. The specific issues addressed here range from pure topological aspec ts of the networks themselves to the balance of biochemical fluxes.
