The Extreme Life of the Sea by Anthony R. Palumbi,Stephen R. Palumbi Pdf

A thrilling tour of the sea's most extreme species, coauthored by one of the world's leading marine scientists The ocean teems with life that thrives under difficult situations in unusual environments. The Extreme Life of the Sea takes readers to the absolute limits of the ocean world—the fastest and deepest, the hottest and oldest creatures of the oceans. It dives into the icy Arctic and boiling hydrothermal vents—and exposes the eternal darkness of the deepest undersea trenches—to show how marine life thrives against the odds. This thrilling book brings to life the sea's most extreme species, and tells their stories as characters in the drama of the oceans. Coauthored by Stephen Palumbi, one of today’s leading marine scientists, The Extreme Life of the Sea tells the unforgettable tales of some of the most marvelous life forms on Earth, and the challenges they overcome to survive. Modern science and a fluid narrative style give every reader a deep look at the lives of these species. The Extreme Life of the Sea shows you the world’s oldest living species. It describes how flying fish strain to escape their predators, how predatory deep-sea fish use red searchlights only they can see to find and attack food, and how, at the end of her life, a mother octopus dedicates herself to raising her batch of young. This wide-ranging and highly accessible book also shows how ocean adaptations can inspire innovative commercial products—such as fan blades modeled on the flippers of humpback whales—and how future extremes created by human changes to the oceans might push some of these amazing species over the edge.

Extreme Living by Keith Veney Sr Pdf

According to the author, Keith Veney, Sr., this book provides a proven and effective blueprint to transform your life. But it is not another easy self-help book, "Let me be very clear," he writes, "it is YOU, not the book, who will transform your life by the actions YOU take and the attitudes YOU cultivate in response to the Essential Elements that I still practice everyday to transform my own life." A 2018 inductee into the Marshall University Hall of Fame, Keith Veney, Sr. transitioned from an NCAA record holder, pro basketball player and a successful marketer to a valued trainer, advisor and confidant for some of the NBA's and WNBA's most elite players. Now in his book Extreme Living, Keith shares the Essential Elements for a Transformed Life that have made him a driving force in the basketball industry and a coveted mentor to young men and women through the Keith Veney Leadership Academy. Each of the Essential Elements for a Transformed Life begins with the letter E and is in bold throughout the book. The E's are divided into three parts: Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom based on Proverbs 2:6: "For the LORD gives Wisdom; from his mouth come Knowledge and Understanding." It takes time to incorporate each E into your life and begins with a written commitment in response to "Keith's Extreme Living Challenge." It might take a few days, weeks or even longer to practice your daily commitment to each Essential Element. This is NOT "30 days to a transformed life," it is a book for a lifetime of growth. Transformation means your character as a person is taking on a new form and that takes TIME! WHAT A HALL OF FAMER WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT KEITH! "If I had the opportunity to build a man in which I could put all the qualities that I admire: He would be rooted in faith, he would be God-fearing, family oriented, reliable, hardworking, honest, responsible, trustworthy, forward thinking, honorable, giving, caring, fun loving, forgiving, a bit stubborn, and living each day to its fullest extent. Good thing I don't have to do any building, that man is my dear friend Keith Veney. He lives his life in an admirable way, he leads by example and his successes are a testament to the things that he values." - Tina Thompson (Tina Thompson is one of the most decorated players in women's basketball history and current head coach of UVA women's basketball. Tina's playing career includes retiring as the all-time leading scorer in WNBA history, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, a nine-time WNBA All Star and four-time champion with the Houston Comets. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.) Two-time NBA All-Star and NBA television analyst Caron Butler proclaims, "This is such an amazing read! The lessons in this book will change the forecast of your future no matter your age."

Life Under Extreme Conditions by Guido di Prisco Pdf

In their very first lecture biochemists learn that biomolecules, namely nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, are extremely temperature sensitive and will denature and lose their function easily. Then how do Archaebacteria survive in hot springs or Antarctic fishes which live in ice-cold water? The way nature engineered subcellular structures, lipid membranes or proteins to meet the biochemical requirements of extreme conditions - like extreme temperature or salt concentrations - is described in Life Under Extreme Conditions.

Being Extreme by Bill Gutman Pdf

As fast-paced as a freefall from a roaring airplane, as thrilling as a towering jump off a ski slope, Being Extreme is a fascinating examination of the adrenaline rush of extreme sports. Here is a world where living life on the edge is the only option, where you are only as good as your last jump . . . and where one false move can take you out of the game permanently. From mountain climbing and freestyle motocross to skydiving and snowboarding and beyond, in the past decade, the world of extreme sports has exploded onto the scene, with daredevils attempting acts of athleticism that leave spectators awed . . . and fearful. Being Extreme explores the motivations and societal impulses behind these high-risk lifestyles through interviews with professional athletes and recreational enthusiasts, as well as with psychiatrists who seek to understand the motivation behind these “Big T” personalities. Authors Gutman and Frederick also explore what heart-stopping sports are around the next curve, because in a world where the “rush” is everything, everyone is always upping their game.

Fungi in Extreme Environments: Ecological Role and Biotechnological Significance by Sonia M. Tiquia-Arashiro,Martin Grube Pdf

Over the last decades, scientists have been intrigued by the fascinating organisms that inhabit extreme environments. These organisms, known as extremophiles, thrive in habitats which for other terrestrial life-forms are intolerably hostile or even lethal. Based on such technological advances, the study of extremophiles has provided, over the last few years, ground-breaking discoveries that challenge the paradigms of modern biology. In the new bioeconomy, fungi in general, play a very important role in addressing major global challenges, being instrumental for improved resource efficiency, making renewable substitutes for products from fossil resources, upgrading waste streams to valuable food and feed ingredients, counteracting life-style diseases and antibiotic resistance through strengthening the gut biota, making crop plants more robust to survive climate change conditions, and functioning as host organisms for production of new biological drugs. This range of new uses of fungi all stand on the shoulders of the efforts of mycologists over generations. The book is organized in five parts: (I) Biodiversity, Ecology, Genetics and Physiology of Extremophilic Fungi, (II) Biosynthesis of Novel Biomolecules and Extremozymes (III) Bioenergy and Biofuel synthesis, and (IV) Wastewater and biosolids treatment, and (V) Bioremediation.

Understanding Extreme Sports: A Psychological Perspective by Eric Brymer,Francesco Feletti,Erik Monasterio,Robert D. Schweitzer Pdf

Extreme sports, those activities that lie on the outermost edges of independent adventurous leisure activities, where a mismanaged mistake or accident would most likely result in death, have developed into a significant worldwide phenomenon (Brymer & Schweitzer, 2017a). Extreme sport activities are continually evolving, typical examples include BASE (an acronym for Buildings, Antennae, Span, Earth) jumping and related activities such as proximity flying, extreme skiing, big wave surfing, waterfall kayaking, rope free solo climbing and high-level mountaineering. While participant numbers in many traditional team and individual sports such as golf, basketball and racket sports have declined over the last decade or so, participant numbers in so called extreme sports have surged. Although extreme sports are still assumed to be a Western pastime, there has been considerable Global uptake. Equally, the idea that adventure sports are only for the young is also changing as participation rates across the generations are growing. For example, baby boomers are enthusiastic participants of adventure sports more generally (Brymer & Schweitzer, 2017b; Patterson, 2002) and Generation Z turn to extreme sports because they are popular and linked to escapism (Giannoulakis & Pursglove, 2017). Arguably, extreme sports now support a multi-billion dollar industry and the momentum seems to be intensifying. Traditional explanations for why extreme sports have become so popular are varied. For some, the popularity is explained as the desire to rebel against a society that is becoming too risk averse, for others it is about the spectacle and the merchandise that is associated with organised activities and athletes. For others it is just that there are a lot of people attracted by risk and danger or just want to show off. For others still it is about the desire to belong to sub-cultures and the glamour that goes with extreme sports. Some seek mastery in their chosen activity and in situations of significant challenges. This confusion is unfortunate as despite their popularity there is still a negative perception about extreme sports participation. There is a pressing need for clarity. The dominant research perspective has focused on positivist theory-driven perspectives that attempt to match extreme sports against predetermined characteristics. For the most part empirical research has conformed to predetermined societal perspectives. Other ways of knowing might reveal more nuanced perspectives of the human dimension of extreme sport participation. This special edition brings together cutting-edge research and thought examining psychology and extreme sports, with particular attention payed to the examination of motivations for initial participation, continued participation, effective performance, and outcomes from participation.
