The Face in the Mirror by Marion Crook Pdf

Being a teenager in today's complex world is a difficult enough task, but adopted teens have a unique struggle: to discover their identity and a sense of belonging and place in the world, which often means coming to terms with their past. The Face in the Mirror, based on numerous interviews with adopted teens, adoptive parents, and birth parents, brings attention to the growing and often controversial phenomenon of teenagers wanting to know where they came from. The book, written for both teenagers and adults, is a frank discussion of the issues surrounding adoption, and in particular what adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents should know when adopted teens want to discover their past. The book also addresses the impact of cross-cultural or cross-racial adoption, as well as the legal parameters of adoption in the US and Canada, including the complex emotions involved. As written by Marion Crook, an adoptive parent herself and the author of previous books about teens, The Face in the Mirror articulates the complexity of adoption issues with candor and compassion.

Black Faces in the Mirror by Katherine Tate Pdf

Here, Katherine Tate examines the significance of race in the U.S. system of representative democracy for African Americans. Presenting important new findings, she offers the first empirical study to take up the question of representation from both sides of the constituent-representative relationship. The first half of the book examines whether black members of the U.S. House legislate and represent their constituents differently than white members do. Representation is broadly conceptualized to include not only legislators' roll call voting behavior and bill sponsorship, but also the symbolic acts in which they engage. The second half looks at the issue of representation from the perspective of ordinary African Americans based on a landmark national survey. Tate's findings are mixed. But, in the main, legislators' race does shape how they represent their constituents and how constituents evaluate them. African Americans view black representatives more positively than they do white representatives, even those who belong to their own political party. Black legislators, however, are just as likely as white representatives to sponsor and gain passage of bills in the House. Tate also concludes that black House members are more liberal as a group than are their black constituents, but that there is considerable divergence in the quality and type of representation they provide. The findings reported here will generate controversy in the fields of politics, law, and race, particularly as debate commences over renewing the Voting Rights Act, which is set to expire in 2007.

The Face in the Mirror by Julian Keenan,Julian Paul Keenan,Gordon G. Gallup,Dean Falk Pdf

We've all witnessed this moment: a dog, a cat, or another animal reacting to its own reflection in the mirror, treating it as another animal to be played with or confronted. As human beings, we take self-recognition for granted, but this seemingly simple ability represents one of the most complex mysteries of neuroscience. The Face in the Mirror takes readers on a lively tour of the neurological, anthropological, and psychological roots of self-recognition -- from the intricate network in the brain that enables higher primates to recognize their image to complex, self-related emotions such as humor, embarrassment, and jealousy that play a crucial role in our evolution and survival. From animals who share our ability for self-recognition to case studies of patients who no longer recognize who they are, the authors examine some of the latest evidence on a subject that has puzzled philosophers and scientists for millennia -- how do we know who we are?

Faces Within the Mirror by Barbara Hudson Pdf

Are you courageous enough to face your mirror? A mirror can be a deceptive object, projecting imagery that could easily be mistaken as an illusion. When it’s faced, from a distance, our beauty is inevitable. Close up, we see imperfections that require foundation, concealer, eyeliner, and lipstick—anything that can make up or make over who we are naturally. With each season of our life, we grow and mature unless we’ve experienced circumstances that have left us paralyzed—afraid to face our fears and mistakes, and afraid to deal with the reality of life. Faces Within the Mirror is a memoir that chronicles the tumultuous seasons of one woman’s journey—molestation, men, money, promiscuity, physical and emotional abuse, and adultery. All these realities were faced in her search for just the opposite, love. Fighting beyond the fear of being judged for her torrid past, Barbara Hudson chose to document the intimate details of the shame and guilt that kept her bound emotionally and physically for years. Innocence, Broken, Discovery, and Awakening, each are milestones she reached as she transitioned through pain. Through the words written on these pages, she has exchanged detrimental experiences that contributed to her long-term demise for an opportunity to inspire others to live beyond their circumstances. Barbara desires to challenge anyone reading this book to relinquish the victim mentality, face the mirror, and begin living a fulfilling peaceful life. Don’t expect the typical male-bashing-woe-is-me-I’m-a-victim-feel-sorry-for-me-but-everything-is-all-good-now-because-I-found-the-Lord-testimony. It is a real life, in-your-face depiction of an ongoing struggle to face the mirror and live!

Faces in the Crowd by Valeria Luiselli Pdf

Electric Literature 25 Best Novels of 2014 Largehearted Boy Favorite Novels of 2014 "An extraordinary new literary talent."--The Daily Telegraph "In part a portrait of the artist as a young woman, this deceptively modest-seeming, astonishingly inventive novel creates an extraordinary intimacy, a sensibility so alive it quietly takes over all your senses, quivering through your nerve endings, opening your eyes and heart. Youth, from unruly student years to early motherhood and a loving marriage--and then, in the book's second half, wilder and something else altogether, the fearless, half-mad imagination of youth, I might as well call it—has rarely been so freshly, charmingly, and unforgettably portrayed. Valeria Luiselli is a masterful, entirely original writer."--Francisco Goldman In Mexico City, a young mother is writing a novel of her days as a translator living in New York. In Harlem, a translator is desperate to publish the works of Gilberto Owen, an obscure Mexican poet. And in Philadelphia, Gilberto Owen recalls his friendship with Lorca, and the young woman he saw in the windows of passing trains. Valeria Luiselli's debut signals the arrival of a major international writer and an unexpected and necessary voice in contemporary fiction. "Luiselli's haunting debut novel, about a young mother living in Mexico City who writes a novel looking back on her time spent working as a translator of obscure works at a small independent press in Harlem, erodes the concrete borders of everyday life with a beautiful, melancholy contemplation of disappearance. . . . Luiselli plays with the idea of time and identity with grace and intuition." —Publishers Weekly

The Mirror & the Light by Hilary Mantel Pdf

‘If you cannot speak truth at a beheading, when can you speak it?’ England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, before Jane dies giving birth to the male heir he most craves. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. But can a nation, or a person, shed the past like a skin? Do the dead continually unbury themselves? What will you do, the Spanish ambassador asks Cromwell, when the king turns on you, as sooner or later he turns on everyone close to him? With The Mirror and the Light, Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage.
