Elements of United States History (Classic Reprint) by Edward Channing Pdf

Excerpt from Elements of United States History IN writing this book, the author has had in mind the presentation Of the essential facts in our history in a clear, brief manner, with such explanations, by means of maps, pictures, and foot-notes, as the size of the work permitted. In its preparation the pupil's point Of view and peculiar needs have been kept constantly in mind, and the author wishes to express his gratitude to Miss Ginn for her very helpful suggestions and advice. She also kindly drew many of the maps which are inserted in the text, prepared the topical reviews which follow the several divisions of the book, and devised the questions that are printed in Appendix V. He further wishes to express his Obligation to Miss Eva G. Moore for many thoughtful suggestions, and especially for her aid in the preparation Of the bio graphical notes and Of Appendix IV with its accompanying map. Bibliographies Of books of American history which are suitable for school use are now 80 plentiful that it has not seemed wise to add to the bulk of this volume by the insertion Of such lists. A History of the United States (Classic Reprint) by Henry Eldridge Bourne Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples of European race. The remainder contains descriptions of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades opens with a chapter which repeats brie y the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially of those within the comprehension of the pupil of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases of the political and military history of the country must be reserved for later study. The Essential Facts of American History by Lawton B. Evans Pdf

Excerpt from The Essential Facts of American History: Revised Edition This book represents the author's effort to make the history of our country interesting to school children, and therefore easily taught and long remembered. The child has been kept in mind at every stage of the writing, for by the test of his ability to understand and his interest to learn will the usefulness of the book be measured. Therefore the text touches the history of the United States in its great epochs only. The author confesses before his critics accuse, that many facts and figures have been omitted as unnecessary to the story of our national establishment. Those incidents that were not influential in the development of our country should be reserved for a larger text and a more mature inquiry. Herein the child need not be bewildered by that multiplicity of detail that often has perplexed his mind and confused his memory. The author has purposely avoided an encyclopedic gathering of historical facts loosely connected by chronological sequence. Instead he has chosen a topical treatment of the great facts of our history, hoping that he may place an emphasis upon those things a child should know and can remember. To that end the chapters are in themselves units, and each represents some significant idea of value. That the author has made each chapter short and the treatment terse should commend itself to those who have to do with the daily routine of the schoolroom. History of the United States by Emma Willard Pdf

Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. The First Book in United States History (Classic Reprint) by Waddy Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from The First Book in United States History The value of biography in teaching history to young pupils is well recognized. The personal, or human, element that this form of narration adds to the text arouses the interest that is essential to the study of history. Care should be taken, however, not to overemphasize biography lest the relative importance of the in dividual and the event be misunderstood and lest the historical connection between events be lost. The biographies furnished in' this text are abundant, and they have been selected because, taken together, they cover nearly all the events of the history of our country that the young pupil need know. Wherever biography is not available, or wherever it is advisable to emphasize the event rather than the individual or to preserve a closer connection between events, the author has resorted to the ordinary form of narration. In preparing the text he has used portions of his earlier work, A Primary History of the United States. When undertaken properly the study of history is not only very useful, but is a source of delight. If the pupil, in taking up the study for the first time, can see in it the wonderful story of people who have gone before him and builded that he might live the better, he will acquire a liking for history that will abide with him in after years. To give to the young people of America not only the advantages, but the pleasure, that may be found in the study of the history of their country is the purpose of the author. With the hope that his purpose will be fulfilled, this little book is sent forth on its mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of the United States for Schools (Classic Reprint) by Andrew Cunningham McLaughlin Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant. All facts are presented in groups. Please look, for instance, at Chart No. 1 at the events it denotes, and at the way it denotes them.
