Fairy Tales From Folk Lore (Classic Reprint) by Herschel Williams Pdf

Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. The tone of this story book is gentle and familiar, but without shying away from the occasionally gruesome details that make fairytales so enticing for younger readers. While many of the tropes are similar to the fairytales we are all familiar with from the Grimm brothers, with lots of events occurring in threes and forgotten younger siblings often turning out to have the wisdom, kindness or bravery their older siblings lack, these are a set of entirely different stories from around the world. The collective imagination of the various fairy tale tellers must have been limitless to create such a wide range of these magical stories. In the first of these stories, the Irish story Yellow Lily, the hero is a cocky young prince who loves to gamble, and is saved from a grisly fate by the eponymous Yellow Lily. Yellow Lily is a heroine who doesn't mind using her wits to lash the hero when he needs it, rather than a merely a meek story device. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance. English Fairy Tales, Folklore and Legends (Classic Reprint) by Charles John Tibbits Pdf

Excerpt from English Fairy Tales, Folklore and Legends The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. The Oak-Tree Fairy Book by Clifton Johnson Pdf

Excerpt from The Oak-Tree Fairy Book: Favorite Fairy Tales The first sixteen tales in this book have a special claim to the attention of American readers, for they were picked up in this country. Two or three of them are to be found in nearly all our fairy-tale collections, and it would not be safe to say that any of them originated here; yet there are none of the sixteen but that differ in an interesting way from the usual versions, and most of them are quite unfa miliar to the present generation. I am indebted for them to friends and correspondents and to the American 701mm! Of Folk Lore. Readers acquainted with similar tales not in the ordinary collections will confer a favor if they will communicate with me. Canadian Fairy Tales (Classic Reprint) by Cyrus Macmillan Pdf

Excerpt from Canadian Fairy Tales Canada-by river and lake and ocean Where sailors and fishermen still watch the stars in forest clearings Where lumbermen yet retain some remnant of the old vanished voyageur life and where Indians still barter for their furs; in remote country places Where women spin while they speak with reverence of their fathers' days. The skeleton of each story has been left for the most part unchanged, although the language naturally differs somewhat from that of the story-tellers from Whose lips the writer heard them. Index to Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends (Classic Reprint) by Mary Huse Eastman Pdf

Excerpt from Index to Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends The increased use of the story hour in work with children and the ever-widening use of fables and myths in school work have Shown the need of an index which would save time by indicating at a glance the source of an asked - for story. When eight out of ten versions of a myth are given in their respective books under different titles bearing little or no resemblance to the one Sought for, when each new translator or compiler may give an entire set of new titles to old favorites, mechanical aid is necessary to Save reason as well as time. This index includes, besides fairy tales and fables, the stories from Greek and Norse mythology which seemed most likely to be called for, also hero stories and some modern stories like the Leak in the dyke, which are not strictly fairy tale or legend but which are constantly asked for by teachers and story tellers. Since inquiries for stories are mainly by title this is first of all a title index. When the same story appears under various titles, it is indexed under the best known or under the one that seemed most descriptive of the story, and references are made from all the other titles. The title as contained in each particular book, when differing from the one under which it is indexed, is given in parenthesis at the end of the entry. In the case of mythology and hero stories the titles have been inverted, or invented if necessary, in order to bring the entry under the name of the character. When a book con tains a number of stories about the same person but bear ing different titles, a general reference to the book is given; when two only, but not in direct Sequence, the titles are given in parenthesis at the end of the entry. The cross references from one story to another are intended to aid story tellers by suggesting similar stories in case the one wished for is not obtainable. The cross references from subjects - holidays, stars, flowers, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Icelandic Fairy Tales (Classic Reprint) by Mrs. Angus W. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from Icelandic Fairy Tales Fairy tales seem scarcely to require any preface, but in publishing these quaint Norse legends, a few explanatory remarks may not be out of place. In their original form, many of the stories are somewhat crude and rough for juvenile reading. This it has been the Editor's endeavour to ameliorate by eliminating all objectionable matter, while at the same time preserving the originality and local colouring which most of them possess. Swedish Fairy Tales (Classic Reprint) by Herman Hofberg Pdf

Herman Hofberg compiles 82 stories in one volume, titled simply as Swedish Fairy Tales, with the main intention of augmenting efforts to preserve some of Sweden's beloved folk tales and pay homage to Swedish literature and history. This edition is a translation of the original book, published in 1890. W.H. Myers, the translator, has assured in his preface that he has done "no embellishment and not more than a faithful reproduction of the author's ideas." The translator also informs that he has left out some notes that the author has made on some passages in the stories and added some of them into the tales as a natural part of the accounts, rather than put all of them in a separate section in the book. This helps readers go through the stories without having to flip through other pages for the supplemental information. The compiler has grouped the fairy tales by region, beginning with Skane and ending with Lapland. Nearly all stories are supplied with beautiful artistic renderings of the tale in question. The illustrations, done by some of the best Swedish artists of the time, are new additions, courtesy of the translator. Those aged 8-80, Swedish or otherwise, will enjoy reading these stories for both their entertainment and educational value. Folk Tales From the Russian (Classic Reprint) by Verra X. Kalamatiano De Blumenthal Pdf

Excerpt from Folk Tales From the Russian N Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical Spirit of modern progress. The traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted nyanya, the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out, and with them the tales and legends, the last echoes of the nation's early joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, are passing away. The student of folk-lore knows that the time has come when haste is needed to catch these van ishing songs of the nation's youth and to pre serve them for the delight of future generations. In sending forth the stories in the present vol ume, all of which are here set down in print for the first time, it is my hope that they may enable American children to share with the children of Russia the pleasure of glancing into the magic world of the old Slavic nation.
