Icelandic Fairy Tales (Classic Reprint) by Mrs. Angus W. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from Icelandic Fairy Tales Fairy tales seem scarcely to require any preface, but in publishing these quaint Norse legends, a few explanatory remarks may not be out of place. In their original form, many of the stories are somewhat crude and rough for juvenile reading. This it has been the Editor's endeavour to ameliorate by eliminating all objectionable matter, while at the same time preserving the originality and local colouring which most of them possess. Hero Tales of the Far North (Classic Reprint) by Jacob A. Riis Pdf

Excerpt from Hero Tales of the Far North When a man knocks at Uncle Sam's gate, craving admission to his house, we ask him how much money he brings, lest he become a hindrance instead of a help. If now we were to ask what he brings, not only in his pocket, but in his mind and in his heart, this stranger, what ideals he owns, what company he kept in the country he left that shaped his hopes and ambitions, might it not, if the answer were right, be a help to a better mutual understand ing between host and guest? For the May flower did not hold all who in this world have battled for freedom of home, of hope, and of conscience. The struggle ls bigger than that. East of the Sun and West of the Moon by Kay Nielsen Pdf

Excerpt from East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales From the North A Folk-Tale, in its primitive plainness of word and entire absence of complexity in thought, is peculiarly sensitive and susceptible to the touch of stranger hands; and he who has been able to acquaint himself with the Norske Folkeeventyr of Asbjornsen and Moe (from which these stories are selected), has an advantage over the reader of an English rendering. Of this advantage Mr. Kay Nielsen has fully availed himself: and the exquisite bizarrerie of his drawings aptly expresses the innermost significance of the old-world, old-wives' fables. For to term these legends, Nursery Tales, would be to curtail them, by nine-tenths, of their interest. They are the romances of the childhood of Nations: they are the never-failing springs of sentiment, of sensation, of heroic example, from which primeval peoples drank their fill at will. Swedish Fairy Tales (Classic Reprint) by Anna Wahlenberg Pdf

Which tempted her to beg him to lend it to her for a dust-brush. An other one jerked his head thrice every time he made a bow. A third was so stupid, when he tried to be genteel, that he kissed her hand and. Lisping. Called her Your most Graciously Gracious Grace. Fairy Tales from the Swedish of G. Djurklo (Classic Reprint) by Nils Gabriel Djurklou Pdf

Excerpt from Fairy Tales From the Swedish of G. Djurklo The interesting and characteristic collection of Swedish Folk and Fairy Tales published by Baron Djurklou nearly twenty years ago, has, strange to say, escaped the attention Of folk-lorists outside the country Of their origin. They are written in the dialect of the Swedish peasantry, to the study of which the author has devoted so much time and labour, and they may therefore have presented diffi culties in the way of translation into other languages. In the present English version of a selection from the tales the translator has tried to retain as far as possible the humorous and colloquial style of the original. The illustrations in the body of the book are by T. Kittelsen and E. Werenskiold, two well known Norwegian artists, and the frontispiece is by. The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (Classic Reprint) by Jacob Grimm Pdf

Excerpt from The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm The inference is plain that these tales must have had a common origin; but whether the stories were carried from one land to another by early traders, or whether their possession by widely scattered peoples proves these groups to have sprung from one original stock, students of mythology have not yet decided. Certain it is that many of the tales are very old, having undergone numerous changes in the course of years, with such omissions and additions as were need ful to adapt them to the country using them. A ver sion of the Cinderella story, for instance, as old records show, was current in Iceland at least one thou sand years ago; while the Wolf and Kids story can be traced in Greek mythology antedating the Christian era. The Swedish Fairy Book (Classic Reprint) by Clara Stroebe Pdf

Excerpt from The Swedish Fairy Book The following volume of Swedish fairy-tales represents a careful choice, after the best original sources, of those examples of their kind which not only appeared most colorful and entertaining, but also most racially Swedish in their flavor. For the fairy-tales of each of the three Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, have a distinct local color of their own. The wealth of material available has made it possible to give due representation to most types of fairy-tales, from the stories of older origin, the tales of giant, troll, and werewolf, to such delightful tales as "Lasse, My Thrall," and "The Princess and the Glass Mountain," colored with the rich and ornate stylistic garb of medieval chivalric poesy. There has been no attempt to "rewrite" these charming folk- and fairy-tales in the translation. They have been faithfully narrated in the simple, naive manner which their traditional rendering demands. And this is one reason, perhaps, why they should appeal to young American readers - for young America by instinct takes kindly to that which is straightforward and sincere, in the realm of fairy-tale as in life itself. The Way Through the Woods — One Hundred Classic Fairy Tales by Rudolph Amsel Pdf

The greatest fairy tales of all time. The 100 tales collected here throw open wide the gates to the realm of fairyland. Inside are princes and princesses, giants and dwarfs, heroes, heroines, simpletons, rogues, wizards, witches, ogres, trolls, elves, magical artefacts, and all manner of talking birds and beasts. As G. K. Chesterton has observed, fairyland is a place where happiness hangs upon a single thread: “Cinderella may have a dress woven on supernatural looms and blazing with unearthly brilliance; but she must be back when the clock strikes twelve. The king may invite fairies to the christening, but he must invite all the fairies or frightful results will follow. Bluebeard's wife may open all doors but one. A promise is broken to a cat, and the whole world goes wrong… A promise is broken to a yellow dwarf, and the whole world goes wrong.” This is also a world of contradiction and disproportion; where honesty may be a virtue, but so is the ability to tell the most outrageous lies conceivable. Here, the prize for treading on a cat’s tail, is a princess; and the penalty for expressing gratitude to a goblin, is a lifelong curse. In compiling this anthology, we have tried to include as many “tale types” as possible, and as much of the varied landscape of the fairy world—deserts, icefields, enchanted forests, underwater kingdoms—as we could fit in. Our principal sources are the great European collections of fairy tales and folk tales as compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Peter Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault, Joseph Jacobs, and Alexander Afanasyev. But there are tales from further afield as well; from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. We have classified the tales thematically, and spread them evenly across ten chapters: 1) The Classic Characters: Heroes, Heroines, and their Foes 2) Birds and Beasts 3) Little; Big 4) The Ship of Fools 5) Quick Minds and Sharp Wits 6) The Royal Court 7) Into the World: Journeys, Quests, and Adventures 8) Magic and Witchcraft 9) Extraordinary Tales of Extraordinary Things 10) Tales for Winter We hope this structure will aid readers somewhat in their explorations. At the same time, we concur with W. H. Auden, who writes, “the way to read a fairy tale is to throw yourself in.”
