Economic Theology by Philip Goodchild Pdf

In Economic Theology, Goodchild offers a philosophical analysis of the contemporary economy in terms of the way it structures credit and faith. The Great Financial Crisis of 2007 and onwards has exposed the extent to which the economy functions as a network of credits and debts. Credit and debt may now be understood as the driving force of economic behaviour. In this analysis, economic theories of markets and money are also ways of ordering trust. Similarly, the institutions of money, finance and banking provide the framework enabling trust and cooperation. Goodchild explores how reliance on such theories and institutions produces disequilibrium dynamics, growing inequalities, increasing enclosure, resource depletion and breakdown. Nevertheless, the failures of the system only intensify efforts to extend the system itself. Building on and extending Goodchild’s Theology of Money, the author exposes the extent to which humanity has become enslaved within theories and institutions of its own making. As the second volume in his Credit and Faith trilogy, Goodchild explains how the economy itself is a way of shaping time and attention, care and evaluation, trust and cooperation, so directly assuming a theological role. This volume extends the theological critique of the dynamics of financial capitalism.

This book is the companion piece to our economic times, simply the best gathering of the Scriptures as an antidote to our mindless and self-driven affluence I have seen. . . . We all need this book in our daily lives; it will live with me. -- Arthur Jones National Catholic Reporter Father Haughey challenges Christians, on and off Wall St., to see money not as a reward, or protection, or even necessity, but as something quite simple and utilitarian -- a means of expressing their love for God. -- Wall Street Journal Scholarly, provocative, and challenging, this book will help its readers quit trying to serve God and Mammon. -- Bishop William E. McManus John C. Haughey, SJ, is the editor of 'The Faith That Does Justice' and author of 'Should Anyone Say Forever?'.

Religion and the Global Money Markets by James Simon Watkins Pdf

This book focuses on how religion—particularly Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and, to a lesser extent, Hinduism—is shaping the ethos and daily actions of market participants within the global money markets. The concepts inherent within Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism are making themselves felt within the global money markets. As Islamic finance led to the introduction of sharia compliant derivatives, for example, Christian investment funds are leading ethical initiatives on Wall Street, the City of London, and elsewhere such as divesting from fossil fuels in response to the climate change emergency. Jewish faith led funds are making significant strides with the further development of impact investments. The concept of Hindu economics is also beginning to shape the actions of some market participants which are tied to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

Money, Sex, Power, and Faith by Steve McAllister Pdf

For those in search of a new direction in the New Economy, after a year without using money, Steve McAllister provides the basics for the new revolution and hope for a new renaissance. At a time when financial systems are falling apart, economic and gender inequality abound, trust in government is at an all time low, people are losing faith in their religion, and the world faces possible cataclysmic climate change, Money, Sex, Power & Faith offers a glimpse at how we got to this point and where we go from here. Looking at how our culture was created by weaving these disparate entities together over the last 10,000 years, this book takes an insightful, witty, incendiary and hopeful look at the foundations of our civilization to ask the hard questions that must be asked about finance, equality, America and Christianity. ..". a deep and historical, multi-cultural tour de force that sheds light on who we are as humans, and what we have become as a result of our pursuit of wealth and power. Perhaps partly due to the unique perspective conferred by his cashless year, Steve McAllister remains refreshingly optimistic and compassionate throughout." - Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow at the Post Carbon Institute and author of Afterburn, The Party's Over and The End of Growth.
