Faith of Our Mothers by Donald S. Aultman Pdf

Dr. Donald Aultman brings together in one volume leaders from the Church of God to reveal the Faith of Our Mothers - stories of faithful women who valued, nourished, and trained their children, sometimes against all odds. These are women of virtue and godly character whose faith, patience, sacrifice, and humor forever shaped the sons and daughters now walking in their footsteps. In a culture where Christianity is increasingly marginalized and children are pulled away from faith...in a world that's cold, raw, and harsh...in a society built on high achievement, self-serving goals, and shortsighted pursuits...may God continue to raise up women of faith who will minister the Word of God, love their families, and show us the way home. -Mark L. Williams Church of God Overseer

Questions Women Asked by Simonetta Carr Pdf

While books about the lives of women in church history are abundant, in this book Simonetta Carr focuses on the important questions they asked—relevant both in the past and today. Throughout church history, women like you (single, married, mothers, and grandmothers, with careers both in and outside their homes) have carefully considered theological issues and asked intelligent and penetrating questions, faithfully seeking the answers in Scripture. Henrietha/Waiting For the World to Change by Joyce M Johnson Pdf

It all started in Toronto, Ontario in a coffee shop on the Southside corner of Church and King Street right across the street from St. James Cathedral. Joanna White was having a difficult time in her office as well as in her marriage as her husband had recently walked out on her. Joanna is trying to restructure her life when she’s interrupted by Jamaican-born Henrietha Browne, who had just walked in forcefully pulling her chair out, sitting down, taking a sip of her coffee then humming a song and tapping in rhythm close by. Intrigued by Henrietha’s carefree nature and desperate to get out of her own thoughts, Joanna asks Henrietha to join. Henrietha agrees and quickly bonds with Joanna while exchanging stories of pain, defeat, and abuse. From that day forward, they were inseparable; making plans to continue to share stories as they explore Toronto. Waiting for the World to Change speaks about marriage and domestic work. Susan Ottawa, a black lawyer in Toronto, and Anita Kingsley, a domestic worker, had met in the same building where they live. One day, they were having lunch and Susan had a book that she had just bought. In anger, she threw a book titled “Is marriage for White People” on the table. The root of Susan’s anger comes from knowing she’s struggling to find a man and men from all different walks of life are quicker to marry white women before the thought of a black woman crosses their mind. Anita drew a comparison to domestic work. As a college educated woman, she too, found it very difficult to find a job outside of domestic work and in her field of study. She finds herself asking “Is domestic work just for black people?” And it continues.

Henrietha by Joyce M Johnson Pdf

A pair of novellas about friendship and endurance in the face of hardship. In the titular story, Johnson introduces an unlikely pair of friends: Joanna White, a white Canadian journalist struggling to overcome the breakup of her long-term relationship, and Henrietha Browne, a Jamaican woman who has seen her share of troubles. Henrietha relates her history of oppression and abuse as well as her quest to find autonomy in a world beset with racism, sexism and poverty. In the process, Joanna comes to a deeper understanding of her own oppression and how her identity, while playing a role in both her successes and failures, is more of a bridge than a barrier to her communion with women of all races and backgrounds. Waiting for the World to Change, a smaller novella, follows a similar structure as black, Canadian, criminal, lawyer, Susan Ottawa leads the defense team in a high profile murder case while drawing strength from her 'jural god' Johnny Cochrane and who seeks counsel with Jamaican housekeeper Anita Kingsley. As they share their feelings about men, religion and racism, Susan sees her life in a new light and slowly opens her heart to Anita's brand of optimistic spirituality. The mirrored structures of both novellas tie them together.

Aging Families and Use of Proverbs for Values Enrichment by Vera R Jackson Pdf

Those providing services to older persons must develop intervention strategies that are relevant to their clients’life experiences. Aging Families and Use of Proverbs for Values Enrichment presents administrators, practitioners, educators, researchers, and students with intervention models that acknowledge and build upon the proverbs orientation of the older client. This insightful book offers information from contributing authors who have professional and personal experience with the use of proverbs. Proverbs, pithy sayings that underline basic life truths, are shown in this book to work as transmitters of values and as assessment tools. To improve the ability of service programs addressing the needs of older persons, Aging Families and Use of Proverbs for Values Enrichment delineates existing approaches that are low-cost or no cost to the service provider and beneficial to older persons. Moreover, these practices are considered within the context of a conceptual model of proverbs intervention programs for older persons that takes into consideration principles of care, cultural diversity, and family traditions. Contributors examine human competencies, coping mechanisms, and limitations, as well as other more general topics: Rehabilitation: Dispels the myth that older persons can not break long-term habits and learn new things that will improve their lives. Intergenerational Transmission: Discusses family-oriented and cultural values that are passed down from generation to generation via oral tradition. Coping with Life Events: Addresses proverbs as coping mechanisms for surviving the social transitions of life. Health and Health Care: Dispels the myth that some health care practices are taboo among older persons. Cultural and Family Ties: Discusses proverbs as the cornerstone of family sharing regarding life’s lessons. Spirituality: Contrasts African American religiosity with spirituality. Discusses proverbs as messages of faith and hope. Any person who provides services to older persons--social workers, counselors, physicians, nurses, ministers and other members of the clergy, speech and physical therapists, rehabilitation counselors, and family therapists--can benefit from using proverbs, as shown in this book, in their care approach.

Reverberating Word by Michael Denham Pdf

Like sounds of beautiful music, worship can renew us for God's glory and our good by the invigorating power of God's reverberating Word. It is God's story that redeems all our stories. We want to tell it again and again as best we can, clearly conveying its message, meaning, richness, claim, and call. Through its every facet and component, worship that is biblically expositional can heighten how we proclaim God's story, faithfully and creatively pointing to the One who alone offers us true identity, security, and destiny. "If you seek me you will find me, if you search with all your heart," declares the Lord. With the ancient prophets and apostles we must repeat and repeat and repeat the most wonderful truth that God wants to be found. In Christian worship such tremendous and tender encounter is available to us as nowhere else.

Faith of Our Mothers, Living Still by Abigail Rian Evans Pdf

This book presents an overview of the ministry of women associated with Princeton Theological Seminary over the last two hundred years. Beginning with a historical overview of early pioneering women at the seminary and a chapter highlighting selected trailblazers in ministry, it goes on to showcase twenty-eight first-person narratives by women from diverse racial-ethnic, geographical, and denominational backgrounds in a variety of ministry settings. It concludes by developing new understandings and directions for Christian ministry and theological education to challenge the twenty-first-century church. The book includes the newly commissioned hymn "Faith of Our Mothers, Living Still," along with several appendixes that feature time lines and highlight Princeton Seminary faculty and alumnae. Faith of Our Mothers, Living Still celebrates the diverse ministries in which women are called to serve God and others, which inspire a holistic vision for theological education that can benefit seminaries, the church, and the world.
