Family Lives by Kristine Bøggild Johannsen,Jane Hjarl Petersen Pdf

This richly illustrated volume offers an informative and essential guide to understanding notions of family ? in the broadest terms ? in a broad geographical and cultural range within the Mediterranean area of the ancient world. The book examines facets of the ancient family and its many constellations through such diverse phenomena as life and death, religion, social status, age, and gender, in the context of both the public and the private spheres of ancient society. In this way, it sheds light on a wide range of aspects pertaining to the family: the family in the 'oikos/domus', theatre performances and burial contexts; how the family is reflected in votive practices, political propaganda, the Roman navy and negotiations; and how gender roles manifested both in private and in public.00The book is the outcome of a seminar held by the Collegium Hyperboreum in November 2015 and entitled 'Families in the Ancient World', where scholars from the Nordic countries came together across disciplines and academic levels to discuss ancient families.

Food Practices and Family Lives in Urban China by Chen Liu Pdf

This book explores the emergent relationship between food and family in contemporary China through an empirical case study of Guangzhou, a typical city, to understand the texture of everyday life in the new consumerist society. The primary focus of this book is on the family dynamics of middle-income households in Guangzhou, where everyday food practices, including growing food, shopping, storing, cooking, feeding, and eating, play a pivotal role. The book aims to conduct a comprehensive and integrated analysis of themes such as material and emotional domestic cultures, family relationships, and social connections between the domestic and the public, based on a discussion of family food practices. These topics will not only offer academic readers a full understanding of the most innovative recent critical engagements with urban Chinese families but also provide more general readers with a broader view of food consumption patterns within the scope of domestic and family issues. This book will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, and human geographers as well as post graduate students who are interested in food studies and Chinese studies.

Nuclear Family Values, Extended Family Lives by Natalia Sarkisian,Naomi Gerstel Pdf

Nuclear Family Values, Extended Family Lives shows how the current emphasis on the nuclear family – with its exclusion of the extended family – is narrow, even deleterious, and misses much of family life. This omission is tied to gender, race, and class. This book is broken down into six chapters. Chapter one discusses how, when promoting "family values" and talking about "family as the basic unit of American society," social commentators, politicians, and social scientists alike typically ignore extended kin ties and focus only on the nuclear family. Chapters two and three show that the focus on marriage and the nuclear family is a narrow view that ignores the familial practices and experiences of many Americans – particularly those of women who do much of the work of maintaining kin ties and racial/ethnic minorities for whom extended kin are centrally important. Chapter four focuses on class and economic inequality and explores how an emphasis on the nuclear family may actually promulgate a vision of family life that dismisses the very social resources and community ties that are critical to the survival strategies of those in need. In chapter five, the authors argue that marriage actually detracts from social integration and ties to broader communities. Finally, in chapter six, the authors suggest that the focus on marriage and the nuclear family and the inattention to the extended family distort and reduce the power of social policy in the United States.

How My Family Lives in America by Susan Kuklin Pdf

In How My Family Lives in America, author-photographer Susan Kuklin zeroes in on the source of cultural identity: the family. Meet: Sanu, who is learning how to braid her hair and to cook the same African meal her father makes. Eric, who loves to play baseball with his dad and to dance the merengue with his friends and family. April, who works hard on her Chinese writing and tries to keep up with her family's challenging games. Their stories emphasize the seemingly minor and everyday ways heritage is transmitted: stories, songs, games, language, special occasions. They show the importance of choice and adaptation in forging a cultural identity. And they provoke readers to examine their own families -- what makes them the same, what makes them distinct, and how this uniqueness is celebrated.

Lives of the Family by Denise Chong Pdf

International bestselling author of The Concubine's Children, Denise Chong returns to the subject of her most beloved book, the lives and times of Canada's early Chinese families. In 2011, Denise Chong set out to collect the history of the earliest Chinese settlers in and around Ottawa, who made their homes far from any major Chinatown. Many would open cafes, establishments that once dotted the landscape across the country and were a monument to small-town Canada. This generation of Chinese immigrants lived at the intersection of the Exclusion Act in Canada, which divided families between here and China, and 2 momentous upheavals in China: the Japanese invasion and war-time occupation; and the victory of the Communists, which ultimately led these settlers to sever ties with China. This book of overlapping stories explores the trajectory of a universal immigrant experience, one of looking in the rear view mirror while at the same time, travelling toward an uncertain future. Intimate, haunting and powerful, Lives of the Family reveals the immigrant's tenacity in adapting to a new world.

How a Show, and the Support of Its Fandom, Changed—and Saved—Lives Supernatural, a three-time People's Choice Award winner for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show and Tumblr's 2015 Most Reblogged "Live Action TV," has made a name for itself by supporting and encouraging its fans to "always keep fighting," and a memorable line from early in the show's run, "Family don't end with blood," became an inspiring mantra for many who found community in the fandom. The actors who bring the show to life have also found, in the show and its community, inspiration, courage, and the strength to keep going when life seemed too hard. Including essays and special messages from Supernatural 's cast: • Jared Padelecki ("Sam Winchester") • Jensen Ackles ("Dean Winchester") • Misha Collins ("Castiel") • Mark Sheppard ("Crowley") • Jim Beaver ("Bobby Singer") • Ruth Connell ("Rowena MacLeod") • Osric Chau ("Kevin Tran") • Rob Benedict ("Chuck Shurley aka God") • Kim Rhodes ("Sheriff Jody Mills") • Briana Buckmaster ("Sheriff Donna Hanscum") • Matt Cohen ("Young John Winchester") • Gil McKinney ("Henry Winchester") • Rachel Miner ("Meg Masters") Collected and edited by Lynn S. Daughters and Granddaughters of Farmworkers by Barbara Wells Pdf

In Daughters and Granddaughters of Farmworkers, Barbara Wells examines the work and family lives of Mexican American women in a community near the U.S.-Mexican border in California’s Imperial County. Decades earlier, their Mexican parents and grandparents had made the momentous decision to migrate to the United States as farmworkers. This book explores how that decision has worked out for these second- and third-generation Mexican Americans. Wells provides stories of the struggles, triumphs, and everyday experiences of these women. She analyzes their narratives on a broad canvas that includes the social structures that create the barriers, constraints, and opportunities that have shaped their lives. The women have constructed far more settled lives than the immigrant generation that followed the crops, but many struggle to provide adequately for their families. These women aspire to achieve the middle-class lives of the American Dream. But upward mobility is an elusive goal. The realities of life in a rural, agricultural border community strictly limit social mobility for these descendants of immigrant farm laborers. Reliance on family networks is a vital strategy for meeting the economic challenges they encounter. Wells illustrates clearly the ways in which the “long shadow” of farm work continues to permeate the lives and prospects of these women and their families.

The Modern Classics: The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong Pdf

The Concubine’s Children is the story of a family cleaved in two for the sake of a father’s dream. There’s Chan Sam, who left an "at home" wife in China to earn a living in "Gold Mountain"—North America. There’s May-ying, the wilful, seventeen-year-old concubine he bought, sight unseen, who labored in tea houses of west coast Chinatowns to support the family he would have in Canada, and the one he had in China. It was the concubine’s third daughter, the author’s mother, who unlocked the past for her daughter, whose curiosity about some old photographs ultimately reunited a family divided for most of the last century.
