Famine that Kills by Alex de Waal Pdf
In 2004, Darfur, Sudan was described as the "world's greatest humanitarian crisis." Twenty years previously, Darfur was also the site of a disastrous famine. Famine that Kills is a seminal account of that famine, and a social history of the region. In a new preface prepared for this revised edition, Alex de Waal analyzes the roots of the current conflict in land disputes, social disruption and impoverishment. Despite vast changes in the nature of famines and in the capacity of response, de Waal's original challenge to humanitarian theory and practice including a focus on the survival strategies of rural people has never been more relevant. Documenting the resilience of the people who suffered, it explains why many fewer died than had been predicted by outsiders. It is also a pathbreaking study of the causes of famine deaths, showing how outbreaks of infectious disease killed more people than starvation. Now a classic in the field, Famine that Kills provides critical background and lessons of past intervention for a region that finds itself in another moment of humanitarian tragedy.

Starvation and the State by Steven Serels Pdf
Sudan has historically suffered devastating famines that have powerfully reshaped its society. This study shows that food crises were the result of exploitative processes that transferred resources to a small group of beneficiaries, including British imperial agents and indigenous elites who went on to control the Sudanese state at independence.

The Benefits of Famine by David Keen Pdf
Brad House calls on churches to wake up to the possibilities for life-transforming, gospel ministry through small groups. In recent years Mars Hill Church, based in Seattle, has experienced the rich blessings that exist within healthy community groups. In Community, House provides a resource for other churches to experience these blessings. House examines healthy, gospel-centered small groups in three sections. In the first, he lays a foundation for the need and purpose of small-group community. He then presents a big-picture "health plan" for small groups, looking closely at the nuts and bolts of small-group ministry. The book ends with a practical section detailing ways churches can move forward to missional small groups that bless each other, the church, and their communities. With wisdom and candor, House helps churches think carefully about the state of their own small groups and, where necessary, take steps toward a healthier, gospel-centered community. Pastors and church leaders, as well as small groups, will find this guide to be a catalyst in their growth and development.

WHY DOES FAMINE PERSIST IN AFRICA? by Luka Biong Deng Kuol Pdf
This book analyses the root and proximate causes of the Bahr el Ghazal famine in 1998 as a chain of political, environmental, economic and social factors, as well as a failure of public action and early warning systems. It is estimated about 70,000 persons died as a result of lack of food and mass starvation. This famine emerged from a long history of political repression by successive governments in Sudan that aimed at destroying the lives and livelihoods in Bahr el Ghazal region. This process resulted not only in the erosion of sources of livelihoods of the rural population but also made them increasingly susceptible to exogenous shocks such as climate change, El-Nino and counterinsurgency warfare. The book shows that the poor management of the famine in 1998 was largely related to lack of a common understanding of famine and the poor quality of information generated by early warning systems that resulted in divided opinion among the charity agencies about the severity of food crisis. It was left to the western media to reveal the presence of the famine and trigger, though late, a massive international relief response. This book is a good resource for readers and practitioners in food security, development, and humanitarian assistance and intervention.

Famine Crimes by Alexander De Waal Pdf
Who is responsible for the failures? African generals and politicians are the prime culprits for creating famines in Sudan, Somalia and Zaire, but western donors abet their authoritarianism, partly through imposing structural adjustment programmes.
