A concise and entertaining explanation of how other accounts, and popular culture such as films, have misrepresented medieval warfare. We don't know how medieval soldiers fought. Did they just walk forward in their armor smashing each other with their maces and poleaxes for hours on end, as depicted on film and in programs such as Game of Thrones? They could not have done so. It is impossible to fight in such a manner for more than several minutes as exhaustion becomes a preventative factor. Indeed, we know more of how the Roman and Greek armies fought than we do of the 1300 to 1550 period. So how did medieval soldiers in the War of the Roses, and in the infantry sections of battles such as Agincourt and Towton, carry out their grim work? Medieval Military Combat shows, for the first time, the techniques of such battles. It also breaks new ground in establishing medieval battle numbers as highly exaggerated, and that we need to look again at the accounts of actions such as the famous Battle of Towton, which this work uses as a basic for its overall study.
War was epidemic in the late Middle Ages. It affected every land and all peoples from Scotland and Scandinavia in the north to the southern Mediterranean Sea coastlines of Morocco, North Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East in the south, from Ireland and Spain in the west to Russia and Turkey in the east. Nowhere was peaceful for any significant amount of time. The period also saw significant changes in military theory and practice which altered the ways in which campaigns were conducted, battles fought, and sieges laid; and changes in the leadership, recruitment, training, supply and financing of armies. There were changes in the relationship between those waging warfare, from generals to irregular troops, and the society in which they lived and for or against which they fought; the frequency of popular rebellions and the participation in them by townspeople and peasants; changes in the desire to undertake Crusades, and changes in technology, including but not limited to gunpowder weapons. This collection gathers together some of the best published work on these topics. The first section of seven papers show that throughout Europe in the later Middle Ages generals led and armies followed what are usually defined as "modern" strategy and tactics, contrary to popular belief. The second part reprints nine works that examine the often neglected aspects of the process of putting and keeping together a late medieval army. The medieval period was a time of feudalism and fanaticism, to causes religious or secular, fought by men who threw their lives into the maelstrom of bloody hand-to-hand combat, enduring horrendous wounds and deprivations of all kinds. Generals, be they high born kings or ambitious mercenaries, were revered and blindly followed because they were good fighters or simply spoke well. Men fought for God, wealth and honor, not necessarily in that order. A man had to fulfill his feudal obligations or he was sure he would go to hell. These rules are intended to give an intense, exciting and mentally challenging game to those who enjoy a test of wills. Players must make many tactical decisions each turn and these will have more of an effect on the outcome of the game than the luck of the dice. Each turn tactical decisions will be made by the player. Some are simple; to charge or to defend. Others are not; whether to fire an intensive arrow barrage and run low of missiles, or to hold back and trust your accuracy will be enough to blunt the enemy charge. Which units you choose to move each turn may give away your strategy, or perhaps deceive your opponent into committing his reserves. Good tactics will win the game for you. You will find that it is important to weaken an enemy before simply charging in with your heaviest troops. Rarely will a reckless charge be rewarded with success. Above all, you should find each game enjoyable and stimulating. Hopefully, you will gain some knowledge of the difficulties of command in the Medieval period.
