As an eleven-year-old boy, along with his mother and two brothers, he experiences the Great Trek on a horse-drawn harvest wagon. Konigsberg by Petter Kjellander,Andreas Leandoer Pdf

East Prussia was the first genuine part of the German home lands that fell to the Red Army in 1945. Already by 1944 some parts of East Prussia had been under the attack of the Soviets. The tragedy became complete in April 1945. The losses and horrors German civilians had to endure were tremendous. The Red Army showed its worst after the capture of East Prussia. The discovery of the Red Army's behavior in late 1944 in some of the border towns led to the most severe battles ever to be fought in East Prussia. The German army tried in vain to save the civilians from the Red Army onslaught. The battle for East Prussia ended with the siege of Konigsberg and Pillau, April 1945. The loss of human lives during these battles for East Prussia was very high. This book covers a much overlooked and little recorded campaign during World War Two. It draws on sources from both the Russian archives giving the Red Army view and those from the German side gives a good balance, and it contains never before seen pictures of the fighting and a great number of maps and color profiles of the AFVs being employed on both sides in the battle. Farewell Marienburg by Claus Neumann Pdf

Life in Marienburg, Germany, in November 1929 was traumatic. The stock market and banks of Germany collapsed, the Berlin soup kitchens could not keep up with the hungry, and unemployment skyrocketed. In this town of 30,000, during this defining moment in history, Claus Neumann was born. Neumann captures his fascinating story in a candid memoir that first details his idyllic childhood and then charts his progress as he grows from enthusiastic student, patriot, and member of Hitler Youth, to a disillusioned teen defending his homeland. He inevitably becomes a refugee who flees the Russians from two separate homes before reaching freedom in the West. Along the way, he smuggles, works as a cook's apprentice simply to eat, and serves time as a prisoner in solitary confinement in one of the most notorious political prisons in East Germany. Neumann eventually becomes cynical about systems and politics but remains filled with optimism about life, traveling to many countries and finding an unusual way to immigrate to the United States. Farewell Marienburg provides not only an interesting perspective into a boy's youthful and naïve admiration of Hitler, but also a poignant glimpse into a young man's courage and determination as he struggles to save both himself and his family.

U-Boat 977 by Heinz Schaeffer Pdf

When it was first published in 1953, opinions were sharply divided between those who deplored the apparent extolling of a vicious form of warfare, and this who found in Heinz Schaeffer’s account a revealing picture of the German Navy’s training and methods. U-Boat 977 was the German submarine that escaped to Argentina at the end of World War Two. This epic journey started from Bergen in Norway, where in April 1945 it was temporarily based, and took three and a half months to complete. Because of the continuing Allied naval activity the commander decided to make the first part of the journey underwater. Before surfacing near the west coast of Africa U-977 had spent a remarkable sixty-six days submerged. Heinz Schaeffer, the commander of U-977 wrote a full account of his career that culminated in this last command. It depicts the grueling aspects of a submariner’s life aboard a vessel that was subjected to harsh conditions of the sea and oceans. As an experienced commander Schaeffer took part in many of the decisive U-boat operations in the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. In the final months of the war, and in common with most surviving U-boat commanders, Schaeffer and his crew came under constant attacks from Allied aircraft and surface ships. The final part of U-Boat 977 is Schaeffer’s account of the journey to Argentina and lays to rest some of the more fanciful sorties that followed its arrival.

The Central Powers on the Russian Front by David Bilton Pdf

Arranged in five sections, one for each year of the War, this superbly illustrated book covers the fluid fighting that took place on the Russian Front from August 1914. The author describes how each year saw dramatic developments, notably actions in Poland, Tannenberg, the Carpathian passes in 1914, the 1915 operations in Galicia and the Baltic and the 1916 Brinsilov offensive. 1917 saw the collapse of the German army leading to the 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and continued fighting along the Baltic and in the Ukraine. The informative text is complemented by over 200 mainly previously unpublished photographs. The Hitler Conspirator by Eberhard Schmidt Pdf

One man’s part in the Nazi plan to assassinate Hitler during WWII—and “an interesting account of one of the key figures in the resistance movement” (Britain at War). As the descendant of an aristocratic family from Westphalia, Germany, Kurt Baron von Plettenberg served as an officer in both world wars. But he never supported the twisted ideals that drove the Third Reich. So, when he found a group of soldiers—including Operation Valkyrie mastermind Claus von Stauffenberg—who realized the true insanity of the Nazi regime, von Plettenberg was compelled to join the resistance that was growing within Hitler’s own circle. On July 20, 1944, the plot to assassinate the führer was finally put into action. Unfortunately for von Plettenberg and his fellow conspirators, the effort failed. Von Plettenberg was not immediately discovered as one of the conspirators. But only a few weeks before the end of the war, he was condemned and arrested. It was then that he was forced to make a terrible decision: betray his friends under torture—or do what his personal honor dictated . . . This gripping biography shows for the first time how von Plettenberg found a way to prevail during those dark days and how significantly he influenced the resistance against Hitler.

The Last Prussian by Charles Messenger Pdf

The renowned WWII historian’s in-depth biography of the Nazi military commander who played a key role in the invasions of Poland, France and Russia. Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt was one of the most important German commanders of the Second World War. He served on both the Western and Eastern Fronts of World War I and rose steadily through the ranks of the German army before retiring in 1938. Then, only a year later, he was recalled to help execute Hitler’s invasion of Poland. He played a leading part in this and the subsequent invasion of France. Thereafter he commanded Army Group South in the assault on Russia before being sacked at the end of 1941. Recalled again, Rundstedt was made Commander-in-Chief West and as such faced the 1944 Allied invasion of France, but was removed that July. He resumed his post in September 1944 and had overall responsibility for the December 1944 Ardennes counter-offensive. Captured by the Americans, he gave testimony as a defense witness at Nuremberg. Though he was charged with war crimes, he was spared trial due to his ill health.

Talisman Sheherezade by Max Furst Pdf

Max Fuerst, the German language author of this book, has in its pages brought together the stories of the imperiled lives and all-too-often untimely deaths of his many friends. He and his friends were Jewish, and that particularly singled out for persecution at the hands of the totalitarian regime called the third Reich and its notorious and virulently anti-Semitic leader, Adolf Hitler. The Trying Twenties were the years from the end of WWI in 1918 until 1932, the year the National Socialist Party (the Nazis) gained the majority in the Parliament (called Reichstag) and with it, the power to build up the so-called Third Reich. During these trying twenties, Germany was known as the Weimar Republic because during this time, the seat of Germanys government was moved from Berlin to Weimar. During the time of the Weimar Republic, there existed and grew a youth movement. Young people formed groups, collectively known as Der Wandervogel (the Rambling Bird). The movement was popular in that it promoted healthy outdoor activities for the young, and it furthered a foot-to-the-ground acquaintance of the young people with their German homeland. But the individual groups each had their own ideas and ideals. Max and Margot Fuerst and their friends founded a Jewish wander group and called it the Black Band. The name was derived from a band of militant peasants during the Peasants War of the 1520s, the years of the Lutheran reformation. While Max tells the stories of his friendsstories with worrisome echoes in what we, in our time and country, the United States, presently experienceit can be said that both the similarities as well as the dissimilarities are worth observing and to be taken into account.
