Farm Buildings (Classic Reprint) by William Arthur Foster Pdf

Excerpt from Farm Buildings Farm buildings in America have had their most rapid development in the years since 1910. With the exception Of that pertaining to the farmhouse, there is little literature to be found on the subject. The conditions surrounding the American farm have tended to hold back the development of good farm buildings. The early settlers in the timbered localities were primarily con cerned with wresting a livelihood from their cleared fields, and bringing more land under the plow. For their buildings they used the material nearest at hand and the log cabin and log barn became a part Of the agricultural history Of the country. The pioneer on the treeless prairie used the sod shanty, or the one-room board shack. The homesteaders were Often people with little ready money, and their buildings were only the barest Of shelters. Farm Buildings by Herbert A. Shearer Pdf

Excerpt from Farm Buildings: With Plans and Descriptions In some parts of the country carpenters may be employed at two dollars per day, while in other sec tions they get seven. One farmer may have a good gravel pit on his farm so he can haul it to the building Site at odd times at little or no extra expense. Another farmer, wishing to put up the same kind of building in another county, would pay two dollars per yard for sand or aggregate at the car and haul it several miles. Prices of lumber and other building materials also vary in different parts of the country. Therefore any general estimate would prove misleading. The Book of Farm-Buildings by Henry Stephens Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Farm-Buildings: Their Arrangement and Construction The object of this work is twofold - one, to establish principles upon which the planning of farm-buildings should be based - the other, to concentrate correct and valuable information on the nature and use of the materials employed in constructing farm-buildings. It may astonish those of our readers who are agriculturists, to learn for the first time that principles should still be sought for in the planning of farm-steadings, after so long an experience of their use. The surprise would be greatly modified were they to take into consideration the care that should be bestowed in placing the numerous apartments of steadings relatively where they should be; and they would then discover that these are generally by no means so conveniently arranged as they might be. At any rate, it is clear that the same arrangement of apartments in a steading for a pastoral farm, where livestock alone are reared, would not be suitable for a strong clay land farm, where no stock are reared at all. We contrast these two extreme cases to make our meaning the clearer. But, however great a difference of arrangement is required in such extreme cases, a material difference also exists in cases even more alike. It will at once be admitted that a different arrangement should be made where stock are reared from where they are not; but even where stock are reared, it must also be conceded that considerable difference in the arrangement is required where the sorts of farming differ. Modern Farm Buildings by A. Dudley Clarke Pdf

Excerpt from Modern Farm Buildings: Their Construction and Arrangement A Third edition of this work having become necessary, the opportunity has been taken of introducing information upon several matters which have recently engaged considerable attention. The awakening of local authorities to the need for taking greater sanitary precautions against the spreading of tuberculosis and other diseases, by the improved construction and management of cow-houses, raises important issues to landlords and tenants, more particularly where the buildings are situated in populous districts. The various points in connection therewith have been considered, and a reprint is given in the Appendix of the "Model Regulations: Dairies, Cowsheds, and Milkshops" which has been recently issued by the Local Government Board for the guidance of local authorities. Chapters, with illustrations, have been added on Cottages, Homesteads for Small Holdings, and Iron and Wood Roofs, with a comparison of their cost and respective advantages for farming purposes; and in response to a suggestion made in a review of the last edition in the Royal Agricultural Society Journal a short chapter on the subject of Repairs and Materials has also been appended. Farm Buildings and Building Construction in South Africa by W. S. H. Cleghorne Pdf

Excerpt from Farm Buildings and Building Construction in South Africa: A d104-Book for Farmers, Agricultural Students, Teachers, Builders, Etc Farm buildings and what are generally known as "permanent improvements" to farms, such as water-supply, drainage, fencing, roads, shelter-belts, wood-lots, and so forth, are, as Mr. Cleghorne rightly intimates in the preface to this book, matters of the first importance to owners or occupiers of land. The necessity for certain buildings and other works of an engineering character on a farm is of course evident to everybody connected with land, for, without them, farming except of the most primitive type would be impossible, but probably few people - even experienced farmers - fully realise the immense influence the laying-out and development of a farm has upon the quantity and quality of the produce obtained from it or on the cost of working it. Unless a farm has been laid out and subsequently developed so as to permit of the carrying on to advantage of the style of farming for which it is best adapted by the soil, climate, and other factors affecting agriculture, it will obviously be impossible to make the best of it. Owing to the manner in which they occur, the benefits arising from a well-selected and developed farm, or the losses occurring from the reverse, are apt to escape immediate attention, but they are none the less real, and the fact of the arable land being cropped to a little better advantage, or the stock thriving a little better, or the carrying capacity of the veld being slightly increased, or of economies being effected in manual and animal labour, or in various other directions, may mean all the difference between profit and loss on the year's working. In South Africa the early settlers devoted great attention to the selection, laying-out, and development of their farms, and particularly to the location and designing of farm houses and buildings, and the beautifying of their surroundings, as may be seen from the distinguished old homesteads still happily remaining in the neighbourhood of Cape Town. How I Managed and Improved My Estate (Classic Reprint) by Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore Pdf

Excerpt from How I Managed and Improved My Estate The house upon it had been a very old farm-house of large size; but the man who had inhabited and possessed it before me had added a vulgar stucco front to it and raised a large pile of ill-built stabling just before the principal face. The old farm-buildings te mained close to the house, the farm-yard coming up to its very walls. There was no view from its windows, all the space in front being choked with timber. Radford's Practical Barn Plans by William A. Radford Pdf

Excerpt from Radford's Practical Barn Plans: Being a Complete Collection of Practical, Economical and Common-Sense Plans of Barns, Out Buildings and Stock Sheds Better farming methods require better buildings, not necessarily expensive ones, but buildings that are well planned and properly adapted to the work for which they are intended. A farm building should be first a property saver, second a labor saver. Farm buildings may be considered in a sense as a necessary expense, but on the other hand they should be considered in the light of an investment. A farm barn is the farmer's factory. It is a building in which he converts raw materials into manufactured products. In a dairy stable he takes cheap feeds and manufacturers them into expensive cream and butter. In feeding stables and hog pens he manufacturers high priced breeding stock as well as good beef, mutton and pork out of grain and roughage. It makes a great difference in the profits whether this barn factory is so constructed that the animals may be made comfortable enough to make the best possible use of the feeds given them. Profits are also seriously affected by the labor problem. Barns and stables may be so arranged as to conserve labor or to waste labor. The object of this book is to present a great many up-to-date ideas in arranging and building in such a way as to enable farmers to take advantage of the experience of others. The author does not claim credit for the different plans and arrangements offered. He has gathered them from successful barn builders and architects in many different states and in Canada. In selecting a plan the farmer himself must be the judge of what he needs. The kind of farm building best adapted to one part of the country is not suitable for another. Two farms adjoining need different buildings because the kind of farming differs with individuals. One farmer makes a great mistake by blindly copying what another farmer uses to advantage. Every building requires careful study to fit it carefully into the environments of the farm and the peculiarities of the man. It is not the aim or intention of this book to induce farmers to put unnecessary money in buildings. So far as possible utility has been combined with economy in construction. The profits in farming operations for the most part are gathered in a retail way. In this respect a farmers business is different from commercial manufacturing concerns because the output cannot be multiplied indefinitely. There is a limit to the production of any kind of farm product; hence the necessity of economy in building. At the same time it pays to build well. It will be noticed that in most cases there are plans of cheap structures, medium priced buildings and others that are thoroughly good. It does not follow that the more expensive buildings are better for the purpose than some of the cheaper ones. They are all well adapted to the uses for which they are intended. The cheaper ones will answer the purpose, but at the same time the better ones will prove more lasting and satisfactory if the farmer has the necessary means at hand to construct them. There is great satisfaction in having good buildings if the owner secures what he wants and gets the worth of his money.
