Flying beyond the stall by Douglas A. Joyce Pdf

The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Technology Development for Army Unmanned Ground Vehicles by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Army Science and Technology,Committee on Army Unmanned Ground Vehicle Technology Pdf

Unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) are expected to play a key role in the Army's Objective Force structure. These UGVs would be used for weapons platforms, logistics carriers, and reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition among other things. To examine aspects of the Army's UGV program, assess technology readiness, and identify key issues in implementing UGV systems, among other questions, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology asked the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study of UGV technologies. This report discusses UGV operational requirements, current development efforts, and technology integration and roadmaps to the future. Key recommendations are presented addressing technical content, time lines, and milestones for the UGV efforts.

This IBM® RedpaperTM publication provides a broad understanding of a new architecture of the IBM Power System E980 (9080-M9S) server that supports IBM AIX®, IBM i, and Linux operating systems (OSes). The objective of this paper is to introduce the major innovative Power E980 offerings and relevant functions: The IBM POWER9TM processor, which is available at frequencies of 3.55 - 4.0 GHz. Significantly strengthened cores and larger caches. Supports up to 64 TB memory. Integrated I/O subsystem and hot-pluggable Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) Gen4 slots, double the bandwidth of Gen3 I/O slots. Supports EXP12SX and ESP24SX external disk drawers, which have 12 Gb SAS interfaces and double the existing EXP24S drawer bandwidth. New IBM EnergyScaleTM technology offers new variable processor frequency modes that provide a significant performance boost beyond the static nominal frequency. This publication is for professionals who want to acquire a better understanding of IBM Power SystemsTM products. The intended audience includes the following roles: Clients Sales and marketing professionals Technical support professionals IBM Business Partners Independent software vendors (ISVs) This paper expands the current set of IBM Power Systems documentation by providing a desktop reference that offers a detailed technical description of the Power E980 server. This paper does not replace the current marketing materials and configuration tools.
