Excerpt from Ferret Facts and Fancies: A Book of Practical Instructions on Breeding, Raising, Handling and Selling; Also Their Uses, and Fur Value At the present time ferrets are mostly used to exterminate rats and for rabbit hunting. For rats they are much usedin barns, gran'aries, grain elevators, mills, stores, levees, walls, ships or any place where rats are. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... were ferreted whether known to be occupied or not. Such being the case only a well trained ferret should be used as numerous dens were tried in which, of course, there was nothing. A well trained ferret will come out, as soon as the den is examined, if containing no game. One ferret will not, as a rule, drive out a mink. Those who have been most successful have used two large ones at least a year old. Mink are usually an easy animal to rout. Many instances are known Avhere dogs having located a mink it left the den by stamping or pounding on the ground over where it was supposed to be. This, more especially, is the case where the den is a shallow one. While a ferret or even two would probably not be a match for an old male mink yet their nature is such that they dodge from den to den, so that chances are that a mink would seek safety in flight rather than fight. If cornered a mink will put up a desperate fight for an animal its size. If the mink is a female it will be apt to run out, at once, LARGE OLD FERRET. unless during mating season when such probably will not be the case. While ferrets and mink do not cross, or breed, yet being in the same family (mustelidae) may be congenial and not inclined to fight. A party who has "ferreted" a good deal for mink says: "They are used with fair success to drive or run mink from holes. Use a large male ferret and if there is a mink in the hole you will hear them fighting. Keep back a rod or so and the mink may run out, as they often do. Now shoot or let the dog loose, if you have one. During February and March, which is the mink running season, if a male ferret goes in where there is a female mink they will not fight and the ferret is apt to stay. Nature of the skunk is much...

Biology and Diseases of the Ferret by James G. Fox,Robert P. Marini Pdf

Biology and Diseases of the Ferret, Third Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide a current, comprehensive reference on the ferret. Encyclopedic in scope, it is the only book to focus on the characteristics that make the ferret an important research animal, with detailed information on conditions, procedures, and treatments. Offering basic information on biology, husbandry, clinical medicine, and surgery, as well as unique information on the use of ferrets in biomedical research, Biology and Diseases of the Ferret is an essential resource for investigators using ferrets in the laboratory and for companion animal and comparative medicine veterinarians. The Third Edition adds ten completely new chapters, covering regulatory considerations, black-footed ferret recovery, diseases of the cardiovascular system, viral respiratory disease research, morbillivirus research, genetic engineering, hearing and auditory function, vision and neuroplasticity research, nausea and vomiting research, and lung carcinogenesis research. Additionally, the anesthesia, surgery, and biomethodology chapter has been subdivided into three and thoroughly expanded. The book also highlights the ferret genome project, along with the emerging technology of genetically engineered ferrets, which is of particular importance to the future of the ferret as an animal model in research and will allow the investigation of diseases and their genetic basis in a small, easily maintained, non-rodent species.

Backvalley Ferrets by Lawrence Lenhart Pdf

Twice declared extinct, North America's most endangered mammal species, the black-footed ferret (BFF), is making a comeback thanks to an evolving conservation regimen at more than thirty reintroduction sites across the continent. Lawrence Lenhart lingers at one such site in his proverbial backyard, the Aubrey Valley in northern Arizona. He clocks hundreds of hours behind the wheel, rolling over ranch ruts as he shines a spotlight over dusky sage steppe in the hopes of catching a fleck of emerald eyeshine. The beguiling weasel at the center of this book is more than a charismatic minifauna; it is the covert ambassador of a critical ecosystem that has dwindled to 1 percent of its former size. In a landscape menaced by habitat fragmentation, bacterial plague, settler colonialism, and soil death, a ferret must be resilient. Lenhart investigates the human efforts to sustain the species through monitoring, vaccination, captive breeding, and even cloning. Lenhart balances this lens of environmental witness with personal essaying that captures the parallel story of his wife's pregnancy as he realizes the ferret's conservation story is dramatically synchronized with her trimesters. In preparing to raise a child in the Anthropocene, Lenhart takes stock of his own ecosystem and finds something is amiss. Through an ethic of "deeper ecology," Lenhart must hone his ecological interest in the black-footed ferret to assure it isn't overshadowed by his own paternal interests.
