Field Marshal KM Cariappa by Brig CB Khanduri Pdf

Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa: His Life and Times narrates, for the first time, the full story of the life and times of India’s first Commander-in-Chief, a soldier and a diplomat and above all. a patriot. Coming immediately after his death at the age of 93, this assiduously researched biography gives a total insight into his life and deeds that have immortalised him. Cariappa’s life has been a fascinating compound of character, luck and circumstances. His meteoric rise from 1947 to the pinnacle enabled him to frame the Indian Army - and other services - into his mould of tenacity and resilience. The book, devotes itself adequately to episodes of his one-man-crusade to let the Armed Forces remain undivided for the duration of the Partition in 1947, when everyone was bent on doing so. Aspersion was cast freely on his political ambition at that time. As C-in-C his skirmish with the politically supported bureaucracy to safeguard the dignity of his office had repercussions on civilmilitary relations but he steadfastly stuck to his position. Hearing Nehru say that “the Chinese will safeguard the northern border and that, he as C-in-C should worry about J&K and Pakistan,” shook him and he could see how removed the leader was from strategic reality. Here then is a book on the life and times of Cariappa in which there is a balanced blend of biography and history which is punctuated by human episodes, anecdotes and reminiscences.

FIELD MARSHAL K. M. CARIAPPA by Prof. L. S. Seshagiri Rao Pdf

In Field Marshal KM Cariappa, Air Marshal KC Cariappa (retd), the airman-son presents the lesser-known face of a disciplinarian, yet loving father who tried to ensure that his son and daughter grew up well despite the absence of a mother; who wished his son to follow in his footsteps, before conceding that ‘The Air Force needs a few good chaps too!’ Fond of reading, sports and music, he was a great success with children and had deep admiration for the apostle of non-violence–Mahatma Gandhi. During Field Marshal KM Cariappa’s illustrious career in the Army spanning over three decades (1918-1953), he had a series of firsts to his credit: the first Kodava to join the first batch of Indian cadets at the Daly College, Indore, from where he was commissioned; the first Indian Officer to enter Staff College, Quetta; the first Indian Brigadier; among the first Indians to enter the Imperial Defence College, UK; the first Indian Major General in 1947; the first Indian Commander-in-Chief. After retiring from the Indian Army in 1953, he served as High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand till 1956. His love for the Jawan and his patriotism were legendary and won him the respect and admiration of his countrymen from all walks of life.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw by Haldi Falki Pdf

Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, fondly known as Sam Bahadur, was one of the greatest war heroes and military leaders India has produced. He became a household name in India and was hailed as a legendary soldier and an inspiration to his fellow citizens for crafting India's greatest military victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war as Chief of Staff (1969-73) of the Indian armed forces. Spanning four decades, he served the country gloriously through five wars—World War II, The Indo-Pakistani War of Partition (1947), the Sino-Indian War (1962), and the India-Pakistan wars (1965 and 1971). The first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the five-star rank of Field Marshal, Sam Bahadur continues to be the most admired war hero of our army chiefs. He will remain an example of self-sacrifice, personal bravery, and steadfast devotion to duty that began before India's independence, and will deservedly live in the annals of the military history of India forever.

Leadership in the Indian Army by V.K. Singh Pdf

Unlike traditional biographies of combat leaders, which focus primarily on military operations or regimental histories, in this book Major General V.K. Singh concentrates on personal accounts, anecdotes and reminiscences in order to highlight these leaders’ personalities, and to draw out the human face behind the military facade. Through the stories of these twelve military leaders, the book also throws new light on several historical events and the role of political leaders during India’s fight for independence and the partitioning of the subcontinent. He gives an overview of India’s military history after independence, including major operations, and describes many hitherto unknown or little-known incidents concerning smaller operations like Nathu La in 1967 and Goa in 1962. Written records tend to glorify the actions of battalions as well as individuals, Singh says, magnifying achievements while suppressing the mistakes and glossing over failures. Leadership in the Indian Army provides a truer picture of the strength of character and convictions of each of these leaders. A must-read for anyone interested in India’s military history.

Emilie and Subhas by Kr̥shṇā Basu Pdf

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s relationship with his wife, Emilie Schenkl, is one of the least-known aspects of the leader’s life. They met in Vienna in June 1934, secretly married in December 1937 in Badgastein, a spa resort in Austria’s Salzburg province, and saw each other for the last time in Berlin in February 1943, two months after the birth in Vienna of their daughter Anita. From 1934 onwards, Subhas and Emilie corresponded continuously through letters whenever they were physically separated. Born in 1910 into a middle-class Austrian family of Vienna, Emilie Schenkl nurtured her husband’s memory and cultivated a deep attachment from afar to India all her life, until her death in 1996. She brought up their daughter on her own, working to support herself and Anita. Fiercely self-reliant and very private, Emilie lived a life of great dignity and quiet courage. Emilie was especially close to Netaji’s nephew Sisir Kumar Bose, whom she first met in Vienna in the late 1940s, and after his marriage in December 1955 she also formed a close friendship with his wife Krishna. Krishna knew Emilie personally from 1959 until Emilie’s death in 1996. This book, illustrated with forty-eight photographs from archives and family albums, is a unique record of Emilie’s life of fortitude and the love story of Emilie and Subhas.

In the Line of Duty by Lt Gen Harbakhsh Singh Pdf

Walking tall, literally, and figuratively, Lt Gen Harbakhsh Singh, VrC, was one of the most gallant and outstanding officers of the Indian Army. He was among the first batch of officers commissioned from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His military career of nearly 35 years was acknowledged for his distinguished service of an exceptional order. He commanded the 1st Battalion the Sikh Regiment during operations in J&K in 1947-48; the historic battle of Shelatang was fought under his command; Battle of Tithwal won him the award of Vir Chakra. He had the rare distinction of having had combat experience in command of troops of or against many nationalities, at all levels of command from a platoon of 40 men to an Army Group consisting of 400,000 military personnel. Born on 1st October, 1913 he started his military career in a war zone in the North- West Frontier Province of erstwhile British India in 1935. He then participated in Allied operations in Malaya during World War II and was held as a prisoner-of-war by the Japanese. He attended Imperial Defence College, London in 1958. Thereafter he held almost all important and key command and staff appointments in Western Command, and in November 1964, took over as Army Commander. In 1962 during the Chinese invasion he was posted as the Corps Commander NEFA and later on in the Sikkim Sector. In 1965 as Army Commander Western Command, it was under his leadership and overall command of the Western Army both in J&K and the Punjab theatre that the Pakistani attacks were repulsed. He was honoured with both Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in recognition of his meritorious services. This is a book about a soldier who had the courage of his convictions and was not afraid to use his judgement and face the consequences. He not only set a standard for himself to perform to the best of his ability but inspired others to do the same. The General has highlighted the shortfalls in strategic thinking on the part of a few military commanders during the J&K operations in 1947, Sino-Indian conflict of 1962 and Indo-Pak war in 1965. At the fag-end of his life he wrote his Magnum opus with the object of passing on his experiences to the younger generation of officers coming up to serve the country. The autobiography recounts all the details of the eventful life of a highly distinguished soldier.
