Field Roots in Canada by G. P. McRostie Pdf
Excerpt from Field Roots in Canada: Classification, Improvement, and Seed Production The term field roots is used in Canadian agriculture chiefly with refer ence to mangels, swedes turnips and carrots grown principally for the feeding of live stock. The use of the crops specified, as a medium for increasing the succulence of animal rations, has been quite general in the more humid parts of Canada since the pioneer days of this country. That the grow ing of field roots has not become much more general with advancing years is principally due to the expense incurred in the raising of such crops. Most growers are still in the sickle stage in the handling of roots, in that thin ning and harvesting are largely done by hand, which practice increases produc tion costs immensely.
