Imperial World by William L Frame Pdf

Empress Isabella feared the burly-bodied, six-legged, narrow-headed creature known as kessra. Her fear of the Planos predator, combined with the late Admiral Harrington's suspicions of the creature's intelligence, made each seek a different path to aid Jennifer and the natives of Planos. Isabella never imagined the transformation of Jennifer's mountain cavern home into a functional pioneering homestead with a few modern technological advantages to enhance their safety would become the focal point of the fearsome creature's rage. She knew Taric was aware the empire had to remain true to the charter's bylaws of noninterference in the natural progression of species evolution. Upon receiving Taric's vid message, she witnessed his emergence as a leader, formally requesting the establishment of political and trade relations between their worlds, instantly providing the empire an opportunity to assist without actively interfering with a trade partner's internal affairs. Leaning back in her desk chair with her eyes closed, imagining Jennifer witnessing the siege of her mountain home amid a rising number of savage, unforgiving predators encroaching into the territory, a frightening vision began to play out in her mind of terrifying enraged beasts rapidly advancing toward Jennifer in a coordinated swarm. Shivering with fright, not wishing to see further into the depths of her imagination, Isabella opened her eyes, fearfully shouting in the privacy of her empty office, "No! No! That's not real!" Yet questioning the imaginative visions within her mind's eye, Isabella sensed a faint nagging presence of premonition, asking her, "Or is it?" Apprehensive of the grim reality facing Planos increased Isabella's anxiety over the survival of vulnerable natives living in the eastern wilderness. However, in this case, Isabella believed any variation of humanoid life in the galaxy has more value than a merciless predator with feeding habits akin to sharks inhabiting Earth's oceans. Isabella had to return to Planos, secretly hoping Merlin, the AI inhabiting the fleet's flagship, Maleficent, could ascertain the true scope of the crisis and provide a course of action without violating the charter's strict bylaws.

Get The Land of the Beasts now and explore the legendary island yourself. Interview with author Q: Tell us about the type of stories you write? A: I write YA epic fantasy or YA high fantasy novels and comics set in my Blade or Flame world. The world I’ve created is filled with magical creatures, a dragon rider, magic weaponry, and all sorts of things expected in a YA epic fantasy, all in a single young adult medieval world. The stories are often filled with dynamic action, ranging from sword combat, magic battles, and epic duels between magical creatures often written in more depth than a typical YA fantasy dragon story. However, I always try to ensure that each character has a good reason to be motivated with whatever they’re fighting for. Q: The Land of the Beasts contains a wide variety of magical creatures. Where did you get ideas for such a setting? At the core of the story, or most YA high fantasy and YA epic fantasy stories involving magical creatures for that matter, is the dragon. I always liked the idea of dragons coming from a land devoid of mass human population, only to be seen sparsely. As for the other magical creatures, such as griffins, hydras and manticores, I felt other creatures needed to dwell on this land, and realised such a place would make a great setting for a fable reminiscent of the tales of old. Q: Your Blade or Flame world is has been credited for including (in meaningful ways), almost every creature of legend in existence in some way or form. Why include so many magical creatures in a single YA high fantasy world? Don’t such fables and legends already come from a single world; ours? What if all legends and fables told in our history were true? What if every dragon rider, and all other magical creatures did exist? Wouldn’t that make our world similar to the one I’ve created? What better setting could there be for a youth fantasy or YA high fantasy? Q: Lastly, how does The Land of the Beasts differ from your YA epic fantasy tales? The Land of the Beasts is written to better resemble the type of fable you’d expect to hear in an old tavern or similar setting. It lacks the heavy character development seen in Champion’s Rising, or the ideological theme present in The Dragons’ Will. However, it features far more exploration, and better describes the magical creatures that exist in the youth fantasy world I’ve created, and adds a whole depth of background behind the dragons glimpsed in the aforementioned works. Perhaps more-so than the others, this reads like a fable of legend telling the journey of how a king became a legend.

The Nature of Fear by Daniel T. Blumstein Pdf

An Open Letters Review Best Book of the Year A leading expert in animal behavior takes us into the wild to better understand and manage our fears. Fear, honed by millions of years of natural selection, kept our ancestors alive. Whether by slithering away, curling up in a ball, or standing still in the presence of a predator, humans and other animals have evolved complex behaviors in order to survive the hazards the world presents. But, despite our evolutionary endurance, we still have much to learn about how to manage our response to danger. For more than thirty years, Daniel Blumstein has been studying animals’ fear responses. His observations lead to a firm conclusion: fear preserves security, but at great cost. A foraging flock of birds expends valuable energy by quickly taking flight when a raptor appears. And though the birds might successfully escape, they leave their food source behind. Giant clams protect their valuable tissue by retracting their mantles and closing their shells when a shadow passes overhead, but then they are unable to photosynthesize, losing the capacity to grow. Among humans, fear is often an understandable and justifiable response to sources of threat, but it can exact a high toll on health and productivity. Delving into the evolutionary origins and ecological contexts of fear across species, The Nature of Fear considers what we can learn from our fellow animals—from successes and failures. By observing how animals leverage alarm to their advantage, we can develop new strategies for facing risks without panic.

Is Remote Warfare Moral? by Joseph O Chapa Pdf

America is at an important turning point. Remote warfare is not just a mainstay of post–9/11 wars, it is a harbinger of what lies ahead—a future of high-tech, artificial intelligence–enabled, and autonomous weapons systems that raise a host of new ethical questions. Most fundamentally, is remote warfare moral? And if so, why? Joseph O. Chapa, with unique credentials as Air Force officer, Predator pilot, and doctorate in moral philosophy, serves as our guide to understanding this future, able to engage in both the language of military operations and the language of moral philosophy. Through gripping accounts of remote pilots making life-and-death decisions and analysis of high-profile cases such as the killing of Iranian high government official General Qasem Soleimani, Chapa examines remote warfare within the context of the just war tradition, virtue, moral psychology, and moral responsibility. He develops the principles we should use to evaluate its morality, especially as pilots apply human judgment in morally complex combat situations. Moving on to the bigger picture, he examines how the morality of human decisions in remote war is situated within the broader moral context of US foreign policy and the future of warfare.
