Chief Contemporary Dramatists, Second Series by Thomas Herbert Dickinson Pdf

Excerpt from Chief Contemporary Dramatists, Second Series: Eighteen Plays From the Recent Drama of England, Ireland, America, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Russia, and Scandinavia This volume contains eighteen complete plays from the drama of England, Ireland, the United States, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Russia, and the Scandinavian countries. Together with the first volume of Chief Contemporary Dramatists, issued in 1915, there are now made available in convenient form thirty-eight plays of the first order of excellence from the theater of Europe and America. In the choice of plays the term contemporary has been interpreted strictly. Of the eighteen plays in this book, ene third were produced in the decade between 1910 and 1920; all save three are prod ucts of the twentieth century. Of these works six have not before been published in English and are here made available for the first time in America. Comparing the plays in this volume with those which constituted the first series of Chief Contemporary Dramatists, some interesting tendencies in the theater of the western world are disclosed. While the thesis or problem play, derived from France and enforced by Ibsen, was predominant in the eighteen-nineties and the earlier years of the new cen tury, the form disappears as the century approaches its second decade. The present volume contains no single distinct exemplar of this type of play. The result Of the freeing of the play from the necessity of being socially serviceable has been greatly to enrich the theater With new interests both in structure and content, and to call into the craft of play making men from arts outside the theater. The Playwright's Art by Jackson R. Bryer Pdf

This collection contains in-depth original and lively interviews with fifteen of America's leading contemporary playwrights––Edward Albee, Robert Anderson, Alice Childress, John Guare, A. R. Gurney, Beth Henley, Henry David Hwang, Larry L. King, Jerome Lawrence, Terrence McNally, Ntozake Shange, Neil Simon, Jean-Claude van Itallie, Wendy Wasserstein, and Lanford Wilson. Taken together, the careers of these dramatists span the entire history of the last fifty years of American theater. The writers talk freely about how they shape a play, how they participate in the production process, and how they feel about film adaptations of their work. The playwrights also dissect the changes that have occurred in the American theater since the Second World War, such as the increased costs of production and tickets, the shift in focus and style of theater critics, the absence of original plays on Broadway, and the growth of regional, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway theater. The Playwright's Art includes an excellent, comprehensive, historical overview of contemporary American drama by Jackson Bryer.

Authorizing Translation by Michelle Woods Pdf

Authorizing Translation applies ground-breaking research on literary translation to examine the intersection between Translation Studies and literary criticism, rethinking ways in which analyzing translation and the authority of the translator can provide nuanced micro and macro readings of literary work and the worlds through which it moves. A substantial introduction surveys the field and suggests possible avenues for future research, while six case-study-based chapters by a new generation of Literature and Translation Studies scholars focus on the question of authority by asking: Who authors translations? Who authorizes translations? What authority do translations have in different cultural contexts? What authority does Literary Translation Studies have as a field? The hermeneutic role of the translator is explored through the literary periods of Romanticism, Modernism, and Postmodernism, and through different cultures and languages. The case studies focus on data-centered analysis of reviews of translated literature, ultimately illustrating how the translator’s authority creates and hybridizes literary cultures. Authorizing Translation will be of interest to students and researchers of Literary Translation and Translation Studies. Additional resources for Translation and Interpreting Studies are available on the Routledge Translation Studies Portal: http://cw.routledge.com/textbooks/translationstudies.
