The numbers that tell the story of humanity 'Vital ... If you're thinking about setting up a giant land empire in Asia, you cannot do so without this book ... If only the last Song emperor had had this book by his side, he might have avoided his appalling fate' Dan Snow What was history's biggest empire? Or the tallest building of the ancient world? What was the average life expectancy in medieval Byzantium? The average wage in Old Kingdom Egypt? Where did scientific writing first emerge? What was the bloodiest ritual human sacrifice ever? We are used to thinking about history in terms of stories. Yet we understand our own world through data: vast arrays of statistics that reveal the workings of our societies. So, join the radical historians Peter Turchin and Dan Hoyer for a dive into the numbers that reveal the true shape of the past. Drawing on their own Seshat project, a staggeringly ambitious attempt to log each piece of demographic and econometric information that can be reliably estimated for every society that has ever existed, Figuring Out The Past does more than tell the story of the past: it shows you the large-scale patterns.

Planet out of the Past by James Lincoln Collier Pdf

Char, Weddy, and Nuell are excited over their discovery on the strange planet Pleisto but also terrified, for the leader of their expedition, Professor Joher, has disappeared. Nuell and Weddy, Joher' children, are concerned for his safety, while Char, his research assistant, feels not only worried but responsible for all of them. He realizes that these prehistoric people may have carried off the professor—and may even have killed him. The three set out to find the professor, and their search leads them through a frightening world, where they must fight for their lives every day, against mastodons and jaguars as well as Pleisto's prehistoric inhabitants. They befriend a wounded hunter, a man who is like their own ancestors from millions of years earlier, and hope that he will lead them to the professor. As their journey progresses, Char is thrilled to have the chance to study prehistoric humans so closely, but he is disturbed by the violence of everyday life on Pleisto, by its uncomfortable similarity to life on Earth, and by his own feelings of competition and aggression. In an exciting climax, he learns about human courage, love, generosity, and cooperation.

The Portal to Past Life Insight by Lynn C. LeBlanc Pdf

The Portal to Past Life Insight is a collection of short stories about individuals looking for answers to life's challenges. After conventional methods have proven unsuccessful, clients turn to a hypnotherapist and past life specialist for an alternative approach.. Most of life's challenges center around lessons the soul has chosen to learn. Unfortunately, the soul often finds itself stuck in loops that transcend lifetimes. Traveling back in time, collecting information we identify lessons the soul is trying to learn. Each story transports us to various locations around the world, throughout history. Our journeys include Ancient Egypt, Siam, and Nazi Germany. We relive the Klondike Gold Rush, search for the Northwest Passage, and serve time as a political prisoner in the penal colony of Australia. Learn what to look for and how to find key information. See how the soul creates lives to learn and grow. Current and past lives are all intertwined so looking at one life in isolation definitely has limitations. It is much easier, more productive, and insightful to look at past lives when trying to solve issues - even 21st century issues. The Portal has a balance of humor and realism. The stories are interesting and uplifting, as well as inspirational. The book encourages the reader to want more - more out of life and more of a connection between their physical body and their soul.

Spanish Women Writers and Spain's Civil War by Maryellen Bieder,Roberta Johnson Pdf

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) pitted conservative forces including the army, the Church, the Falange (fascist party), landowners, and industrial capitalists against the Republic, installed in 1931 and supported by intellectuals, the petite bourgeoisie, many campesinos (farm laborers), and the urban proletariat. Provoking heated passions on both sides, the Civil War soon became an international phenomenon that inspired a number of literary works reflecting the impact of the war on foreign and national writers. While the literature of the period has been the subject of scholarship, women's literary production has not been studied as a body of work in the same way that literature by men has been, and its unique features have not been examined. Addressing this lacuna in literary studies, this volume provides fresh perspectives on well-known women writers, as well as less studied ones, whose works take the Spanish Civil War as a theme. The authors represented in this collection reflect a wide range of political positions. Writers such as Maria Zambrano, Mercè Rodoreda, and Josefina Aldecoa were clearly aligned with the Republic, whereas others, including Mercedes Salisachs and Liberata Masoliver, sympathized with the Nationalists. Most, however, are situated in a more ambiguous political space, although the ethics and character portraits that emerge in their works might suggest Republican sympathies. Taken together, the essays are an important contribution to scholarship on literature inspired by this pivotal point in Spanish history.

Native Officialdom in Western India by Abhijit Sirdesai Pdf

This book is about the landlords or the revenue officers of the administrative system recognized as the Watan System which was rampant for more than five centuries before India’s independence. With a focus on the Deshmukhi Watan or the Desgut, held by Deshmukhs or Desais, this volume presents the hierarchy of the chain of officers like the Patils, Deshpandes, Kulkarnis, etc., and attempts to reflect on the status accorded to them by the society and the treatment they received from the British in the 19th century. Topics explored in this volume relate to the administrative history, the judicial institutions, laws of inheritance, role of religion, commonness of superstition, customs and traditions, etc. We find ample citations of the authoritative sources backing the views expressed by the author at every turn as we proceed. The book has a foreword written by Dr. Teotonio R. de Souza, a historian and the founder of Xavier Center for Historical Research, Goa.
