Financing of Private Hydropower Projects by Chris R. Head Pdf

Concerns about global warming and the availability of clean renewable sources of energy are increasing. However, as private companies take over state power utilities, the demand for profit has stifled those concerns. Currently the private sector is building over 40 megawatts of fossil-fuel thermal plants for each new megawatt of hydropower. This report examines the reasons for building fewer hydropower plants and looks at ways to eliminate some of the drawbacks. It studies ten privately financed hydro schemes, which represent all but the smaller projects likely to be considered for private financing in the future. The projects are located in five countries where the power sector is at different stages of maturity and deregulation. They include multi- and single-purpose projects intended for both domestic supply and export.

Project Financing: Analyzing And Structuring Projects by Carmel De Nahlik,Frank J Fabozzi Pdf

This book covers the project financing process from the perspective of a wider and more general group of stakeholders by addressing the three key elements of cash flow; collateral/support structures; and risk management. Following a detailed description of project financing in the first chapter, the authors discuss the project financing process, modelling and risk management, public private partnerships and project financing in practice including the use of the principles in a range of different contexts. A sound understanding of project management is fundamental to successful project financing, as is the need to have a clear plan for a project to communicate the essential information that different stakeholders require.A successful project financing starts with the different phases of a project and descriptions of the key risk areas include the challenges in estimating the cost of a project and the general principles of financial modelling with a discussion of the unique aspects of financial modelling for different industries. Throughout the book, short recent international case studies are used to illustrate successful and unsuccessful projects allowing the lessons learned to be visible and there are many examples of specific applications of project finance techniques throughout the text.Bundle Set: Project Financing (Analyzing and Structuring Projects & Financial Instruments and Risk Management)

Independent Power Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa by Anton Eberhard,Katharine Gratwick,Elvira Morella,Pedro Antmann Pdf

Inadequate electricity services pose a major impediment to reducing extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in Sub-Saharan Africa. Simply put, Africa does not have enough power. Despite the abundant low-carbon and low-cost energy resources available to Sub-Saharan Africa, the region s entire installed electricity capacity, at a little over 80 GW, is equivalent to that of the Republic of Korea. Looking ahead, Sub-Saharan Africa will need to ramp-up its power generation capacity substantially. The investment needed to meet this goal largely exceeds African countries already stretched public finances. Increasing private investment is critical to help expand and improve electricity supply. Historically, most private sector finance has been channeled through privately financed independent power projects (IPP), supported by nonrecourse or limited recourse loans, with long-term power purchase agreements with the state utility or another off-taker. Between 1990 and 2014, IPPs have spread across Sub-Saharan Africa and are now present in 17 countries. Currently, there are 125 IPPs, with an overall installed capacity of 10.7 GW and investments of $24.6 billion. However, private investment could be much greater and less concentrated. South Africa alone accounts for 67 IPPs, 4.3 GW of capacity and $14.4 billion of investments; the remaining projects are concentrated in a handful of countries. The objective of this study is to evaluate the experience of IPPs and identify lessons that can help African countries attract more and better private investment. At the core of this analysis is a reflection on whether IPPs have in fact benefited Sub-Saharan Africa, and how they might be improved. The analysis is based primarily on in depth case studies, carried out in five countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda, which not only have the most numerous but also among the most extensive experience with IPPs.

Practical Methods for Assessing Private Climate Finance Flows by Julia Illman,Mikko Halonen,Shelagh Whitle,Nella Canales Trujillo Pdf

In spite of the climate finance commitment by the developed countries to mobilise jointly 100 billion USD per year by 2020 to address the needs of developing countries from a wide variety of sources, there is no clear agreement on the types of funds that might count as mobilised by developed countries and what private finance flows could be considered as mobilised for climate action in developing countries. This study identifies ten considerations that are key to estimating mobilised private climate finance. An example methodology is proposed for tracking mobilised private investment and the methodology is tested on three Nordic case studies. Through the further refinement of methodologies, it should be possible to develop common systems for M&E of finance enabling a clearer understanding of the finance landscape and the effectiveness of interventions for mobilising private investment.

New Perspectives on Construction in Developing Countries by George Ofori Pdf

Developing countries face the challenge of maintaining economic growth and socio-economic development, at the core of which sits the construction industry. Considerable research on construction in developing countries took place in the 1970's and 1980's, but little since, a gap which this book fills. Including contributions from prominent academics and practitioners in Australia, China, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK, this is a truly international analysis of a subject of global interest. The most insightful and relevant of recent research on topics such as Millennium Development Goals, the informal construction sector, human resource development, technology, finance and social change, are all addressed in the context of the construction industry in the developing world. Also considered are other key aspects of construction industry development such as institution building, nurturing of contractors and consultants and championing of industry development programmes. While the challenge has grown and the needs have become even more pressing, the research to date has rarely presented effective solutions. Focussing on those aspects of the construction industry most crucial to development, this is a much needed up-to-date study that sheds new light on a variety of concepts and issues. This is essential reading for researchers, professionals and students interested in the construction industry in developing countries. Readers of this book will be interested in its companion volume; Contemporary Issues of Construction in Developing Countries.

Hydropower in the New Millennium by B. Honningsvag,G.H. Midttomme,K. Repp,K. Vaskinn,T. Westeren Pdf

The power sector has undergone a liberalization process both in industrialized and developing countries, involving market regimes, as well as ownership structure. These processes have called for new and innovative concepts, affecting both the operation of existing hydropower plants and transmission facilities, as well as the development and implementation of new projects. At the same time a sharper focus is being placed on environmental considerations. In this context it is important to emphasize the obvious benefits of hydropower as a clean, renewable and sustainable energy source. It is however also relevant to focus on the impact on the local environment during the planning and operation of hydropower plants. New knowledge and methods have been developed that make it possible to mitigate the local undesirable effects of such projects. Development and operation of modern power systems require sophisticated technology. Continuous research and development in this field is therefore crucial to maintaining hydropower as a competitive and environmentally well-accepted form of power generation.
