Participation, Community, and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb by Patricia Farrell Donahue Pdf

Participation, Community, and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb: Of Our Own Making challenges the conventional wisdom about participation in modern American communities through the story of Pimmit Hills, Virginia—one of the first federally-financed subdivisions built for World War II veterans. Its story will be familiar to the millions of baby boomers who grew up in middle-class suburbs. This book argues that every community is the sum of all of the different types of participation—positive, negative, formal, informal, direct, and indirect—and not just the few participation activities that social surveys have tracked over the past few decades, such as voting or attending religious services. At the same time, Pimmit Hills’s story is unique. Its proximity to Washington, D.C., meant its residents had front-row seats to—and sometimes supporting roles in—the creation of policies that continue to shape the America we live in today, such as childhood vaccinations, discrimination, and information technology.

Santa Claus by Pat Koch,Emily Thompson Pdf

Santa Claus, Indiana, acquired its famous name in 1856 and has been celebrating the spirit of Christmas ever since. Postmaster James Martin began answering childrens letters to Santa and his elves in 1914, a tradition that continues to this day and makes Santa Claus a favored destination for those seeking the holiday spirit. The towns unique name prompted Robert Ripley to feature it in his popular cartoon strip, and businessmen such as Carl Barrett and Milton Harris raced to erect Christmas attractions as early as 1935. Beating Walt Disney by nearly a decade, Louis J. Koch opened Santa Claus Land, the nations first theme park, in 1946. Today, visitors still flock to Santa Claus to share in the magic of Americas Christmas Hometown.

Lakeside High School 1963-1964 by Bob Walkotten Pdf

As I progressed through my decades of teaching, coaching and counseling, I remembered many successes and many failures on the part of myself, my colleagues. Many days we would drive home thinking that we should have done something differently to turn around a child, stop a fight, follow up with a conference with counselors, parents, or administrators. Those are learning experiences that help even the best of us.These are children. They are not plants. We just don't walk up to them with a watering can, give them a little water, and expect a well-behaved, motivated individual to grow and develop in that chair. They are human. Their intellectual levels are different. They may come from broken homes. They may be hungry and have all the other influences on their lives. We can't forget that. Yet as I pass two other high schools on the way to work, everything on the outside appears orderly. Students file through the doors and get to their classes. I wonder if these schools have the same knuckleheads, drug dealers, troublemakers that my school does--and I know that they do. I want to take you to a year in my teaching past that was particularly unique. Mind you, a vast majority of the students followed the rules, got to class on time, did their homework, etc. Most teachers also did the right things. But from time to time, the wrong mix of students and the wrong mix of teachers have educators questioning their career choice. There are students that economically have more than others. Drugs from one group to another is increasing. Drinking is rampant, and some teachers need to brush up on their professionalism. Parents too have found the need for improvement.

Hide or Seek by Charles C. Woods Pdf

Charles C. Woods remembers hearing someone say childhood has nothing to do with who we are today. He could not disagree more. In Hide or Seek, he shares his memories growing up in Tuckerman, Arkansas, highlighting his first eight years. Nicknamed “Bubby” by his older brothers, he suffered tragedy and loss—but also enjoyed good times. As you read, allow your inner child to walk alongside him as he copes with the unexpected and finds strength to persevere. One of the best lifelines he had growing up was Jesus. When the author needed Him, He was there—and continues to be there to this day. When the author needed someone to help, He brought them. Anytime a person opens their life, they take a chance of losing a part of themselves. The author wrote this book to gain a part of himself that had been missing—and to encourage others to avoid hiding things of the heart. Join the author as he recalls what has shaped him into the person, he is today in this collection of childhood memories.
