101 Ways to Succeed by Trevor Price Pdf

This book helps you become a 1st class student. It provides answers to the many questions you will face as a university student. It gives simple things you can do to improve your student life and boost your chance of graduating with the degree you deserve. Each one of the 101 tips has a little something that you can do, a way to behave or an easy to understand approach to boost your grades. Roll them all up together and the potential for your improved success is huge.I was stood in a book store at an airport, browsing the vast array of books all lined-up on the shelves, killing time as I waited for my connecting flight. I was returning home from a teaching mission in a university in China where I'd been in front of a group of 50 Chinese people for two weeks, all keen students and eager to learn. On that return trip, a flight of more than 12 hours, I had plenty of time to reflect upon how my classes had gone - what went well and what could be improved. I thought about how those Chinese students had reacted to my style of teaching and the sorts of challenges that they faced. I realized that just like the students I work with at home in the UK, the Chinese students had very similar challenges facing them as they moved from being high school students usually living in their parental home, to moving into university and living more independently. I realised that the challenges faced by all students come in stages: -A year before starting university - this is often the time when teachers, parents and students themselves start to seriously think about what they want to do next in their lives and start planning for university.-A few months before the course starts and you need to act to ensure you get the place on the course, and at the university, you want. The practical logistics of moving to a new student life also need to be considered.-A week before university life begins and you'll need to get organized, ready for the move.-The 1st week of the course and there's a lot to absorb to ensure you get off to a good start in your student journey.-Once the course begins and you start to settle into the rhythms of studying.Once the course has started, the initial challenges of getting to university and on the right course have been successfully overcome. But then new challenges present themselves. Some of these are focused upon the academic work: -Writing assignments given to you at university can be quite different to the work you may have written before.-Giving presentations is often a nerve-wracking and stressful experience, especially if you haven't had to do many such presentations before.-Exams at university may take different forms and could be a very different experience to those you've sat through already.-Doing research is something you may think that you have no experience of. Nonetheless it's often an important part of succeeding at university. If this is your first time living away from home, knowing how to keep healthy and happy whilst studying is critical so as to keep at your best level of learning. This is where this book comes in. Here are the answers to the questions that students have asked me during my decades of teaching in universities around the world. The 101 tips in this book are helpful to you wherever in the world you decide to study and whichever university you decide to attend. As this book shows, there are many things you can do to help yourself improve and get even better grades at university than you hoped for: you can do it!

Like Wildfire by Sean Patrick O'Rourke,Lesli K. Pace Pdf

The sit-ins of the American civil rights movement were extraordinary acts of dissent in an age marked by protest. By sitting in at "whites only" lunch counters, libraries, beaches, swimming pools, skating rinks, and churches, young African Americans and their allies put their lives on the line, fully aware that their actions would almost inevitably incite hateful, violent responses from entrenched and increasingly desperate white segregationists. And yet they did so in great numbers: most estimates suggest that in 1960 alone more than seventy thousand young people participated in sit-ins across the American South and more than three thousand were arrested. The simplicity and purity of the act of sitting in, coupled with the dignity and grace exhibited by participants, lent to the sit-in movement's sanctity and peaceful power. In Like Wildfire, editors Sean Patrick O'Rourke and Lesli K. Pace seek to clarify and analyze the power of civil rights sit-ins as rhetorical acts—persuasive campaigns designed to alter perceptions of apartheid social structures and to change the attitudes, laws, and policies that supported those structures. These cohesive essays from leading scholars offer a new appraisal of the origins, growth, and legacy of the sit-ins, which has gone largely ignored in scholarly literature. The authors examine different forms of sitting-in and the evolution of the rhetorical dynamics of sit-in protests, detailing the organizational strategies they employed and connecting them to later protests. By focusing on the persuasive power of demanding space, the contributors articulate the ways in which the protestors' battle for basic civil rights shaped social practices, laws, and the national dialogue. O'Rourke and Pace maintain that the legacies of the civil rights sit-ins have been many, complicated, and at times undervalued.

The Dream Is Freedom by Sarah Azaransky Pdf

Pauli Murray (1910-1985) was a poet, lawyer, activist, and priest, as well as a significant figure in the civil rights and women's movements. Throughout her careers and activism, Murray espoused faith in an American democracy that is partially present and yet to come. In the 1940s Murray was in the vanguard of black activists to use nonviolent direct action. A decade before the Montgomery bus boycott, Murray organized sit-ins of segregated restaurants in Washington DC and was arrested for sitting in the front section of a bus in Virginia. Murray pioneered the category Jane Crow to describe discrimination she experienced as a result of racism and sexism. She used Jane Crow in the 1960s to expand equal protection provisions for African American women. A co-founder of the National Organization of Women, Murray insisted on the interrelation of all human rights. Her professional and personal relationships included major figures in the ongoing struggle for civil rights for all Americans, including Thurgood Marshall and Eleanor Roosevelt. In seminary in the 1970s, Murray developed a black feminist critique of emerging black male and white feminist theologies. After becoming the first African American woman Episcopal priest in 1977, Murray emphasized the particularity of African American women's experiences, while proclaiming a universal message of salvation. The Dream Is Freedom examines Murray's substantial body of published writings as well personal letters, journals, and unpublished manuscripts. Azaransky traces the development of Murray's thought over fifty years, ranging from Murray's theologically rich democratic criticism of the 1930s to her democratically inflected sermons of the 1980s. Pauli Murray was an innovative democratic thinker, who addressed how Americans can recognize differences, signaled the role of history and memory in shaping democratic character, and called for strategic coalition building to make more justice available for more Americans.

This Worldwide Struggle by Sarah Azaransky Pdf

This Worldwide Struggle: Religion and the International Roots of the Civil Rights Movement identifies a network of black Christian intellectuals and activists who looked abroad, even in other religious traditions, for ideas and practices that could transform American democracy. From the 1930s to the 1950s, they drew lessons from independence movements around for the world for an American racial justice campaign. Their religious perspectives and methods of moral reasoning developed theological blueprints for the classical phase of the Civil Rights Movement. The network included professors and public intellectuals Howard Thurman, Benjamin Mays, and William Stuart Nelson, each of whom met with Mohandas Gandhi in India; ecumenical movement leaders, notably YWCA women, Juliette Derricotte, Sue Bailey Thurman, and Celestine Smith; and pioneers of black Christian nonviolence James Farmer, Pauli Murray, and Bayard Rustin. People in this group became mentors and advisors to and coworkers with Martin Luther King and thus became links between Gandhi, who was killed in 1948, and King, who became a national figure in 1956. Azaransky's research reveals fertile intersections of worldwide resistance movements, American racial politics, and interreligious exchanges that crossed literal borders and disciplinary boundaries, and underscores the role of religion in justice movements. Shedding new light on how international and interreligious encounters were integral to the greatest American social movement of the last century, This Worldwide Struggle confirms the relationship between moral reflection and democratic practice, and it contains vital lessons for movement building today.
