Fish Habitat and Dredging by Canada. Department of Fisheries and Oceans Pdf

This bulletin reviews the rationale for dredging, the types of dredging (mechanical & hydraulic), and the impacts of dredging on fish & fish habitat. These include physical effects such as burial by dredge spoil and chemical effects from the release of contaminants. The final sections discuss safeguards to reduce the negative effects of dredging & dumping operations as well as the role of Fisheries & Oceans Canada in protecting fish & fish habitat.

Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Ocean Studies Board,Committee on Ecosystem Effects of Fishing: Phase 1â¬"Effects of Bottom Trawling on Seafloor Habitats Pdf

Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

Reservoir Fish Habitat Management by L.E, Miranda Pdf

This document is organized into an introduction and 13 sections. Section 1 is based on a nationwide survey of reservoir habitats completed by the Reservoir Fisheries Habitat Partnership (RFHP). The RFHP canvassed agency professionals about various aspects of reservoir fish habitat degradation, and identified 12 comprehensive factors that captured most degradation. The sections developed in this document parallel these 12 factors to identify management practices that address the perceived degradation. Most sections are organized similarly: background information about the degradation factor is followed by a listing of alternative management practices. Deciding on appropriate management action can be complex because there are often several options for addressing degradation problems. Different options may have different cost, effectiveness, and consequences. A simplified decision model to choose among management options is suggested in section 12. Habitat management often goes far beyond the manpower available to agencies involved in reservoir habitat management, so suggestions on working with stakeholders are included in section 13. Ballpark costs of reservoir fish habitat management practices are given in the Appendix.

Dredged Material Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement by Anonim Pdf

This final Dredged Material Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (DMMP/EIS) presents the Corps of Engineers programmatic plan for maintenance of the authorized navigation channel and certain publicly owned facilities in the Lower Snake River reservoirs between Lewiston, Idaho and the Columbia River, and McNary reservoir on the Columbia River for 20 years; for management of dredged material from these reservoirs; and for maintenance of flow conveyance capacity at the most upstream extent of the Lower Granite reservoir for the remaining economic life of the dam and reservoir project (to year 2074) The Corps, along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, analyzed four alternatives for this Final DMMP/EIS: Alternative 1 - No Action (No Change) - Maintenance Dredging With In-Water Disposal; Alternative 2- Maintenance Dredging With In-Water Disposal to Create Fish Habitat and a 3-Foot Levee Raise; Alternative 3 - Maintenance Dredging With Upland Disposal and a 3- Foot levee Raise; and Alternative 4 - Maintenance Dredging With Beneficial Use of Dredged Material and a 3-Foot Levee Raise (Recommended Plan/Preferred Alternative).
