Fish passage technologies : protection at hydropower facilities. by Anonim Pdf

The focus of this report is technologies for fish passage around hydropower generation facilities and protection against entrainment and turbine mortality. Emphasis is given to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-licensed hydropower projects where fish protection is a subject of controversy and congressional interest due to the Federal Power Act (FPA) and the Electric Consumers Protection Act (ECPA). Thus institutional issues related to FERC-relicensing are also discussed. (Major points of controversy are high-lighted in box 1.1).

Innovations in Fish Passage Technology by Mufeed Odeh Pdf

Odeh (Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center) presents 13 contributions which explore the technical possibilities of constructing effective fish bypass systems for hydroelectric dams, especially those that are due for relicensing in the context of new regulations. The articles consist of case studies in the effectiveness of such techniques as surface bypass systems, modular inclined screens, hydroacoustic evaluation of fish entrainment patterns, surface collection, surface spill gates, and radio-tagging and radar tracking behavior evaluation strategies. Design of Fishways and Other Fish Facilities by Charles H. Clay Pdf

This new edition of the best-selling book describes the main types of fishways and fish facilities used around the world to assist the passage of fish over dams and other obstructions to their migration. It also focuses on the protection of fish (mainly young fish) from the hazards encountered in their downstream migrations. The book brings together the type of knowledge and research needed to decide on the facility used as well as its design and operation. It emphasizes the need for both biologists and engineers to collaborate in the design and indicates in what fields such collaboration would benefit fisheries conservation in the future. This is the Second Edition of the only book to bring together all of these topics worldwide under one cover.

Effect of Fishway Slope on Rate of Passage of Salmonids by Joseph R. Gauley Pdf

This study on the effect of fishway slope on rate of passage of salmonids was made by comparing passage time of fish in two fishways with different slopes. It is based mainly on steelhead (Salmo gairdneri) but includes some chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and silver (Oncorhynchus kisutch) salmon. Both fishways were pool-and-overfall type in which 6 feet of elevation was gained. Passage of steelhead in the 1:8-slope fishway was in general, as fast as or faster than in the 1:16-slope fishway. In the 1:8-slope fishway, the passage time appeared to increase with an increase in rise between pools. In the 1:16-slope fishway, the passage time of steelhead increased as the season progressed.

Fish Migration and Fish Bypasses by Mathias Jungwirth,Stefan Schmutz,Steven Weiss Pdf

International Conference on Fish Migration and Bypass Channels held in Vienna in September 1996. It covers the range of fish pass technologies currently in use throughout the world and attempts to develop a wider, more ecological perspective on this formerly engineering-orientated discipline. Emphasis is placed on enhancing an understanding of fish migration behaviour, and achieving optimum design to meet the behavioural requirements of all known migratory species. Additional attention is paid to comparing the European trend towards constructing nature-like bypass channels with the highly technical solutions dominant in North America.

Fish Locomotion by Paolo Domenici Pdf

Fish accomplish most of their basic behaviors by swimming. Swimming is fundamental in a vast majority of fish species for avoiding predation, feeding, finding food, mating, migrating and finding optimal physical environments. Fish exhibit a wide variety of swimming patterns and behaviors. This treatise looks at fish swimming from the behavioral and

Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration by Ulrich Schwevers,Beate Adam Pdf

This book offers a comprehensive review of current systems for fish protection and downstream migration. It offers the first systematic description of the currently available technologies for fish protection at hydropower intakes, including accurate and timely data collected by the authors and other researchers. It describes how to design and test them in agreement with the guidelines established from the EU Water Framework Directive. The book includes important information about fish biology, with a special focus on swimming and migration mechanisms. It offers a robust bridge between concepts in applied ecology and civil hydraulic engineering, thus providing biologists and hydraulic engineers with an authoritative reference guide to both the theory and practice of fish protection. It is also of interest for planners, public authorities as well as environmental consultants
