Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries by Daniel Pauly,Dirk Zeller Pdf

The Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries is the first and only book to provide accurate, country-by-country fishery catch data. This groundbreaking information has been gathered from independent sources by the world's foremost fisheries experts. Edited by Daniel Pauly and Dirk Zeller of the Sea Around Us Project, the Atlas includes one-page reports on 273 countries and their territories, plus fourteen topical global chapters. Each national report describes the current state of the country's fishery; the policies, politics, and social factors affecting it; and potential solutions. The global chapters address cross-cutting issues, from the economics of fisheries to the impacts of mariculture. Extensive maps and graphics offer attractive and accessible visual representations.

Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Ocean Studies Board,Committee on Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service Pdf

In recent years there has been growing interest in having fisheries stakeholders involved in various aspects of fisheries data collection and experimentation. This activity is generally known as cooperative research and may take many forms, including gear technology studies, bycatch avoidance studies, and surveys. While the process is not new, the current interest in cooperative research and the growing frequency of direct budgetary allocation for cooperative research prompted this report. Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service addresses issues essential for the effective design and implementation of cooperative and collaborative research programs.

Reinventing Fisheries Management by T.J. Pitcher,P. Hart,D. Pauly Pdf

Judged by a dismaying track record and a consequent downturn in the reputation of fisheries scientists, fisheries management is certainly a candidate for calls for reinvention, with many of the world leaders in this area holding the view that no fishery has ever been properly understood or managed. With fisheries science in a state of flux, this extremely important book seeks a new paradigm that will place this flux of ideas in perspective and help us to choose those that will make fisheries management work. The book was planned at a symposium of over 100 fishery researchers at the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and is organized into five parts: Why does Fisheries Science Need Reinventing?; New Policies; The Role of the Social Sciences; Ecology; Modelling. Carefully integrated and edited by three of the world's leading fishery scientists, this stimulating book should find a place on the shelves of all fishery scientists throughout the world. It will be an invaluable reference source to those studying fish biology, fisheries and oceanography and all those involved in fisheries policy decisions in government and university research establishments.

5 Easy Pieces by Daniel Pauly Pdf

5 Easy Pieces features five contributions, originally published in Nature and Science, demonstrating the massive impacts of modern industrial fisheries on marine ecosystems. Initially published over an eight-year period, from 1995 to 2003, these articles illustrate a transition in scientific thought—from the initially-contested realization that the crisis of fisheries and their underlying ocean ecosystems was, in fact, global to its broad acceptance by mainstream scientific and public opinion. Daniel Pauly, a well-known fisheries expert who was a co-author of all five articles, presents each original article here and surrounds it with a rich array of contemporary comments, many of which led Pauly and his colleagues to further study. In addition, Pauly documents how popular media reported on the articles and their findings. By doing so, he demonstrates how science evolves. In one chapter, for example, the popular media pick up a contribution and use Pauly’s conclusions to contextualize current political disputes; in another, what might be seen as nitpicking by fellow scientists leads Pauly and his colleagues to strengthen their case that commercial fishing is endangering the global marine ecosystem. This structure also allows readers to see how scientists’ interactions with the popular media can shape the reception of their own, sometimes controversial, scientific studies. In an epilog, Pauly reflects on the ways that scientific consensus emerges from discussions both within and outside the scientific community.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Capabilities and Needs in Latin America by World Bank Pdf

This report contains the findings of two missions. One visited Uruguay and Argentina, and the other covered Chile, Ecuador and Peru. The report on Uruguay and Argentina starts with a brief overview of the fishing industry and the scope of fisheries and aquaculture research. Subsequent sections describe the organization of research paying special attention to issues such as funding and prioritization. Further, the impact of research on the fishing and aquaculture industries of Uruguay and Argentina are assessed. General conclusions as well as recommendations are also presented. The studies of Chile, Ecuador, and Peru start with a brief overview of the state of fisheries and aquaculture in the area. This is followed by an analysis of research capabilities in these three countries. Opportunities for enhancing the contributions of research to the economic and social progress of the sector are examined. Conclusions of the mission are also presented.

Applied Operations Research in Fishing by K. Brian Haley Pdf

Arnold Hansen Director Marine Technology Centre Trondheim Norway Norwegian fisheries are presently facing serious problems, but also some promising challenges. Most important is the fact that nearly all the major fish stocks have been over-exploited, either by an overall too large fishing effort or a too large effort on wrong year-classes, resulting in stock-sizes reduced well below an economically optimum level or even nearly depleted. The atlanto-scandic herrings, for instance, has been below an exploitable level for several years. The recommended total allowable catch of Norwegian-Arctic cod for 1980 is 390,000 tons compared to more than 800,000 tons a few years ago. The Norwegian industrial fisheries are today mainly based on capelin. The Soviet Union has successfully claimed an increased share of this resource, resulting in an accordingly reduced catch quota for the Norwegian purse seining fleet. As a result of this resource situation the excess catching and processing capacity is great. Maintaining this excess capacity means high production costs. Both short term and long term planning for a better capacity adoption to the resources are necessary, as are means of policy to obtain this goal. (In other words fishery management is a neces sity. ) Generally speaking the fishing industry is energy intensive. Fuel prices have increased dramatically the last year. Further increases may be expected as we gradually change from the present politically based situation of a non-realized excess crude oil production capacity into a real shortage of oil fuels.
