Fishes of the Okefenokee Swamp by Joshua Laerm,B. J. Freeman Pdf

The Okefenokee Swamp, located in southeastern Georgia and northern Florida, is the largest freshwater wetland in the United States. In this illustrated guide to the fishes of the swamp, Joshua Laerm and B. J. Freeman provide descriptions and drawings of thirty-six species, ranging from the American eel to the speckled madtom, chain pickerel, and blackbanded darter. For each fish, the authors include latinate, common, and variant names and discuss differences from similar species, local habitats as well as occurrences beyond the Okefenokee, and feeding and mating patterns. With each entry Laerm and Freeman also relate brief comments and tips borrowed from the folklore of the swamp and the experience of fishermen and cooks. The guide thus notes the variety of bait--from kernels of corn to rotten liver--that will hook a catfish; discusses which fishes are more easily taken by gigging; reveals the sport involved in catching the flavorful American eel; and identifies those fishes, such as the swamp darter, that are common as aquarium pets. Providing descriptions, drawings, and scientific and general information, Fishes of the Okefenokee Swamp is a complete handbook for the angler, naturalist, and scholar.

Invertebrates in Freshwater Wetlands of North America by Darold P. Batzer,Russell B. Rader,Scott A. Wissinger Pdf

Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that help filter a great number of toxicants out of the earth's waters. They must be managed and occasionally even built from scratch, including all of the flora and fauna that grows there. Invertebrates play a key role in the wetland food chain. This comprehensive resource is the first dedicated solely to the ecology and management of invertebrates.

Centrarchid Fishes by Steven Cooke,David P. Philipp Pdf

Centrarchid fishes, also known as freshwater sunfishes, include such prominent species as the Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Bluegill. They are endemic to Eastern North America where they form part of a multi-million dollar sports fishing industry, but they have also been widely introduced around the globe by recreational anglers, in aquaculture programs and by government fisheries agencies. Centrarchid Fishes provides comprehensive coverage of all major aspects of this ecologically and commercially important group of fishes. Coverage includes diversity, ecomorphology, phylogeny and genetics, hybridization, reproduction, early life history and recruitment, feeding and growth, ecology, migrations, bioenergetics, physiology, diseases, aquaculture, fisheries management and conservation. Chapters have been written by well-known and respected scientists and the whole has been drawn together by Professors Cooke and Philipp, themselves extremely well respected in the area of fisheries management and conservation. Centrarchid Fishes is an essential purchase for all fish biologists, ecologists, fisheries managers and fish farm personnel who work with centrarchid species across the globe.

Mississippi waters are some of the richest inland fish habitats in the United States. In fact, only four states have more native fish than Mississippi's 204. Inland Fishes of Mississippi is for anglers and nature lovers who want to learn more about this thriving diversity. Introductory chapters present the history of the study of fish in Mississippi, the distribution patterns of species, important conservation issues, and valuable information on identifying fish by examining body shape and structure. Following these are illustrated keys to all the families of fish known to inhabit inland waters. Each key is a detailed guide to identifying the specific species within a family of fish. Keys include: color photographs of freshly collected examples meanings of scientific names for fish descriptions of color and physical changes maximum sizes of fish, including records for game fish precise maps of distribution vital information on habitat requirements, feeding, and behavior tips on where to catch a species status of conservation efforts For both the casual angler and the ichthyologist, Inland Fishes of Mississippi will prove a constant resource and an irreplaceable asset for identifying, observing, and catching the state's various species. Bioassessment and Management of North American Freshwater Wetlands by Russell B. Rader,Darold P. Batzer,Scott A. Wissinger Pdf

The first resource of its kind-essential practical guidance on wetlands bioassessment and management Although bioassessment has become a vital tool in the successful management of many aquatic ecosystems, to date there has been no single book that covers the application of bioassessment principles to wetland ecosystems. This contributed volume fills this important gap in the literature, with a multifaceted look at the issues and techniques involved in the successful bioassessment and management of freshwater wetlands. The book is divided into two parts-bioassessment and wildlife management. After a review of general bioassessment principles, Part I discusses the statistical issues related to sampling numerous sites, as well as the application of multivariate procedures and invertebrate functional groups to wetland bioassessment. A series of case studies examines bioassessment results using various organismal groups, followed by several chapters that trace the relationship between bioassessment and wetland restoration. Coverage also explores how to use and sample bacteria, algae, macrophytes, and invertebrates. Part II covers key management topics, including many that are frequently overlooked in other treatments of the subject. Separate chapters discuss how to manage fish, waterbirds, and mosquitoes in wetlands. Other chapters address timber harvest strategies and impact assessment, as well as the biological control of an invasive wetland plant. As wetland managers work to strike a vital balance between resource exploitation and resource protection, this book offers an important repository of practical information to use in meeting this formidable challenge. It will be welcomed by wetland managers and scientists, environmental engineers, ecologists, civil engineers, and others whose work involves wetlands study and management.

Use of a Flooded Bottomland Hardwood Wetland by Fishes in the Cache River System, Arkansas by John A. Baker,K. Jack Killgore Pdf

Species composition and relative abundance of larval and adult fishes were evaluated in flooded bottomland hardwood wetlands of the Cache River system, Arkansas. Fishes were collected for two consecutive years during the reproductive season (March-June) in the channel and floodplain of the Cache River. Multiple sampling gears were used to evaluate the importance of three distinct habitats: channel, tupelo forest, and oak forest. A total of 10,770 larval and juvenile fishes were collected, representing at least 36 different species. Pirate perch was numerically the most common larval fish species collected. Percidae (darters) was the dominant family, comprising at least seven species and approximately 40 percent of the total number of larval fish collected. Cyprinidae (minnows) and Centrarchidae (sunfish) were the next dominant families. Spotted sucker, channel catfish, and flier were sporadically abundant during the study. More larval fish species were caught in the channel but numerical abundance was highest in the oak habitat. 0 the 32 species collected in the channel, however, 5 species were represented by only a single individual. A total of 30 species were collected in the oak habitat, and this assemblage represented 54 percent of the total number of larval fish collected during the 2-year study. Of these 30 species, 13 taxa were most abundant in this habitat. Cache River system, Hydrology, Wetlands, Collection methods, Spawning, Floodplain habitats, Species composition.
