The Proceedings of the Colloquium New Perspectives on Flemish Illuminations constitute an overview of recent research into manuscript illumination in Flanders under the Dukes of Burgundy. In 1959 Leon Delaisse organized the seminal exhibition La miniature flamande. Le mecenat de Philippe le Bon (Flemish Illumination. The Patronage of Philip the Good). Seen in Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris, it was a ground-breaking initiative. In 2014, more than fifty years later, our knowledge of the illuminated manuscript in the Southern Netherlands during the Burgundian period has vastly increased, as revealed in the exhibition Miniatures flamandes 1404-1482 (Flemish Miniatures 1404-1482) held in Brussels and Paris in 2011-2012. The associated Colloquium stimulated sixteen papers, by leading specialists in the field, presented here in six sections. The first is devoted to the context of Flanders in the 15th century with a focus on secular illumination; the second concentrates on individual illuminators: Jan de Tavernier, the Master of the Houghton Miniatures, the Painters of Philip the Good's Alexander and Loyset Liedet; the third considers text, traditions and images; the fourth, on the relationships between illumination and panel painting, is followed by codicological studies developing the topics of artistic Interchange, border decoration and portraits in musical manuscripts. The final section consists of technical studies of grisaille illuminations and methods of flesh painting. Through new research techniques and topics, together with established approaches such as connoisseurship and codicology, the papers advance our understanding of the intentions, processes, chronology and geographic distribution of Flemish manuscript production.

The subject of this monograph is the prolific mid-fifteenth-century Flemish book illuminator whom Friedrich Winkler first identified and named in 1915 after a richly decorated copy of the statutes and privileges of Ghent and Flanders made for Philip the Good, duke of Burgungy (Vienna, Ost. National-bibl., Cod.2583). While no fewer than 15 codices and cuttings have been ascribed to the painter in the 80 years since Winkler's pioneering essay, there has been no published effort to date to order, analyze, and evaluate the work of the Ghent Privileges Master in the larger context of the history and arts of the Burgundian Netherlands. The monograph's essay is divided into five chapters. The first caracterizes the style of the Vienna Privileges itself and then carefully trace its origins and development. Compositional and iconographic sources, innovations, and problems are identified and analyzed in the second chapter; ancillary decoration -especially decorated initials and floral borders- are described and localized and collaborating miniaturists identified in the third. In the fourth chapter the stylistic evidence obtained in the first three chapters is joint together with that provided by texts and provenances in order to date and localize the subject books and leaves. The final chapter positions those codices and cuttings in the larger context of Flemish illumination in the time of Philip the Good. Following the essay are 334 figures and 141 comparative illustrations and a catalogue raisonne of 30 books and 24 leaves in the Privileges style. A decisive majority of the figures and illustrations have never before been reproduced in the scholarly literature; the physical characteristics, texts, miniatures, provenance, and bibliography of each codex and cutting are described in full detail in the catalogue. Following the latter are appendices that provide the readings and textual authorities for the Hours of the Virgin.

The subject of the present publication is the working practices of the Ghent-Bruges illuminators, active in Flanders in the decades around 1500. Its focus is on manuscripts featuring freestanding, isolated motifs painted in the margins of text pages. The author traces how this decorative system was created by the Master of the David Scenes in the Grimani Breviary, a prolific inventor of appealing borders, how it was applied by his closest collaborators, and how it was imitated and adapted by other illuminators. Among these were Simon Bening, the Carmelite sister Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, and a number of anonymous masters, including several whose oeuvres are identified here for the first time. The author elucidates the sources for the isolated motifs and demonstrates how the codicological structure of the manuscripts provides insight into the use and the dispersion of various models for border decorations. The book discusses the famous strewn-flower borders and other types of fully decorated borders as well. The author analyses the isolated motifs in relationship to the page layout and the decorative programme of Ghent-Bruges standardised books of hours. The stylistic examination of both the miniatures and the borders of the manuscripts under discussion completes the integrated approach of this study. The author demonstrates how the illuminators collaborated with each other and exchanged artistic models for the illumination of these precious manuscripts.
