Flight measurements were made of the handling qualities of an F6F-3 airplane. Thirty flights were made covering the period from February 1 to May 15, 1944. This test program was conducted at the Langley Field laboratory of the NACA. The present paper gives results of tests made to determine the longitudinal stability and control of the subject airplane. The remaining portion of the investigation, which includes the lateral and directional stability and control and the stalling characteristics, will be covered in two later reports.

Description of Russian Aircraft Engines "AM 35" and "AM 38" by H. Denkmeier,K. Gross Pdf

The Russian AM 35 and AM 38 aircraft engines have superchargers with a swirl throttle, which appears to be a purely Russian development. This paper gives the results of test runs of the two engines, including the effects of the swirl throttle on engine performance.

Dynamic Stability of Vehicles Traversing Ascending Or Descending Paths Through the Atmosphere by Murray Tobak,H. Julian Allen Pdf

An analysis is given of the oscillatory motions of vehicles which traverse ascending and descending paths through the atmosphere at high speed. The specific case of a skip path is examined in detail, and this leads to a form of solution for the oscillatory motion which should recur over any trajectory. The distinguishing feature of this form is the appearance of the Bessel rather than the trigonometric function as the characteristic mode of oscillation.

Analytical Investigation of Some Three-dimensional Flow Problems in Turbomachines by Frank E. Marble,Irving Michelson Pdf

The flow of an incompressible inviscid fluid through a turbomachine with blade rows consisting of an infinite number of similar infinitely thin blades has been investigated theoretically in order to examine and describe the three-dimensional flow phenomena and to illustrate the methods of calculation developed.

Method of Matching Components and Predicting Performance of a Turbine-propeller Engine by Alois T. Sutor,Morris A. Zipkin Pdf

Analytical expressions are derived to show the geometric, thermodynamic, and aerodynamic relations among compressor, turbine, and exhaust nozzle for a gas-turbine engine. For a known compressor performance map, a matching method is described to show some of the design compromises that must be made when the components are to be combined into a turbine-propeller engine. A method of predicting engine performance for a range of operating conditions from known component maps is presented. An illustrative example of the matching method and the performance analysis is presented, showing some of the practical limitations of engine operation.

Effect of Exhaust Pressure on the Performance of a 12-cylinder Liquid-cooled Engine by Leland G. Desmon Pdf

A dynamometer-stand investigation was conducted to determine the effect of exhaust pressure on the performance of a 12-cylinder liquid-cooled aircraft engine equipped with a conventional exhaust collector. The investigation covered a range of exhaust pressures from about 7 to approximately 62 inches of mercury absolute, engine speeds from 1600 to 3000 rpm, inlet-manifold pressures from 30 to 50 inches of mercury absolute and fuel-air ratios of 0.063, 0.069, 0.085, and 0.100.

Analysis of the Effects of Design Pressure Ratio Per Stage and Off-design Efficiency on the Operating Range of Multistage Axial-flow Compressors by Melvyn Savage,Willard R. Westphal Pdf

Multistage compressors composed of high-pressure-ratio stages have higher over-all off-design efficiencies and a wider operating range than those made up of low-pressure-ratio stages if the blade-row efficiency curves for the two cases are assumed to be somewhat similar.

Pressure-distribution Measurements on the Rotating Blades of a Single-stage Axial-flow Compressor by Jack F. Runckel,Richard S. Davey Pdf

A preliminary investigation has been made of the pressure distribution about the mean-radius section of the rotating blades of a single-stage axial-flow compressor at a blade Mach number of 0.35. A 24-cell pressure-transfer device used in obtaining the pressure data is described and the accuracy of these data is established by several independent methods.

Knocking Combustion Observed in a Spark-ignition Engine with Simultaneous Direct and Schlieren High-speed Motion Pictures and Pressure Records by Gordon E. Osterstrom Pdf

This report support simultaneous direct and schlieren photographs at 40,000 frames a second and correlated pressure records taken of knocking combustion in a special spark-ignition engine to ascertain intensity of certain end-zone reactions previously seen by schlieren photography alone.
