Case, Agreement, and their Interactions by András Bárány,Laura Kalin Pdf

Differential argument marking has been a hot topic in linguistics for several decades, both because it is cross-linguistically widespread and because it raises essential questions at multiple levels of grammar, including the relationship between abstract processes and overt morphological marking, between case and agreement, and between syntax and information structure. This volume provides an introduction into the current state of the art of research on differential case marking and chapters by leading linguists addressing theoretical questions in a wide range of typologically and geographically diverse languages from the Indo-European, Sinitic, Turkic, and Uralic families. The chapters engage with current theoretical issues in the morphology, syntax, semantics, and processing of differential argument marking. A central issue addressed by all the authors is the adequacy of various theoretical approaches in modelling (different varieties of) differential case marking, such as those determined by topicality, those driven by cumulative factors, and those that involve double marking. The volume will be of interest to students and researchers working on cross-linguistic variation in differential marking and its theoretical modelling.

My Journey to the Stars by Scott Kelly Pdf

In this debut autobiographical picture book, celebrated astronaut Scott Kelly describes how he -- and his twin brother -- grew up to achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut. As Scott Kelly prepares to blast back to Earth after a record-breaking year spent on the International Space Station, he thinks about what brought him here and what awaits him at home. Scott's partner-in-crime is his twin brother, Mark. They spent their childhood getting in and out of scrapes. They had a talent for finding trouble and taking risks, which turned out to be great training for the biggest risk of all -- space travel. Along the way to becoming astronauts, they learned to be peacemakers, to stay calm in the toughest of times, to support their family, to work hard and take small steps towards their goals. Scott learned that he needed people to believe in him, as his principal did, even though he was at first a terrible student who couldn't sit still. All of these skills served him well during his year on the ISS, where he and his crew ran 400 experiments and he himself became a test subject. The sacrifices Scott made, the dangers he faced and the sight of our beautiful planet from space made coming home even sweeter.

The Ultimate Book of Saturday Science by Neil A. Downie Pdf

The best backyard experiments for hands-on science learning The Ultimate Book of Saturday Science is Neil Downie's biggest and most astounding compendium yet of science experiments you can do in your own kitchen or backyard using common household items. It may be the only book that encourages hands-on science learning through the use of high-velocity, air-driven carrots. Downie, the undisputed maestro of Saturday science, here reveals important principles in physics, engineering, and chemistry through such marvels as the Helevator—a contraption that's half helicopter, half elevator—and the Rocket Railroad, which pumps propellant up from its own track. The Riddle of the Sands demonstrates why some granular materials form steep cones when poured while others collapse in an avalanche. The Sunbeam Exploder creates a combustible delivery system out of sunlight, while the Red Hot Memory experiment shows you how to store data as heat. Want to learn to tell time using a knife and some butter? There's a whole section devoted to exotic clocks and oscillators that teaches you how. The Ultimate Book of Saturday Science features more than seventy fun and astonishing experiments that range in difficulty from simple to more challenging. All of them are original, and all are guaranteed to work. Downie provides instructions for each one and explains the underlying science, and also presents experimental variations that readers will want to try.

Flip Flop Fly Ball by Craig Robinson Pdf

How many miles does a baseball team travel in one season? How tall would A-Rod's annual salary be in pennies? What does Nolan Ryan have to do with the Supremes and Mariah Carey? You might never have asked yourself any of these questions, but Craig Robinson's Flip Flop Fly Ball will make you glad to know the answers. Baseball, almost from the first moment Robinson saw it, was more than a sport. It was history, a nearly infinite ocean of information that begged to be organized. He realized that understanding the game, which he fell in love with as an adult, would never be possible just through watching games and reading articles. He turned his obsession into a dizzyingly entertaining collection of graphics that turned into an Internet sensation. Out of Robinson's Web site, www.flipflopflyball.com, grew this book, full of all-new, never-before-seen graphics. Flip Flop Fly Ball dives into the game's history, its rivalries and absurdities, its cities and ballparks, and brings them to life through 120 full-color graphics. Statistics-the sport's lingua franca-have never been more fun. (By the way, the answers: about 26,000 miles, at least if the team in question is the 2008 Kansas City Royals; 3,178 miles; they were the artists atop the Billboard Hot 100 when Ryan first and last appeared in MLB games.)

501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read Before They Die by Ron Kaplan Pdf

Propounding his “small ball theory” of sports literature, George Plimpton proposed that “the smaller the ball, the more formidable the literature.” Of course he had the relatively small baseball in mind, because its literature is formidable—vast and varied, instructive, often wildly entertaining, and occasionally brilliant. From this bewildering array of baseball books, Ron Kaplan has chosen 501 of the best, making it easier for fans to find just the books to suit them (or to know what they’re missing). From biography, history, fiction, and instruction to books about ballparks, business, and rules, anyone who loves to read about baseball will find in this book a companionable guide, far more fun than a reference work has any right to be.

The 10,000 Dollar Flip Book by Anonim Pdf

From photographer Santiago Melazzini, maker of popular flipbooks such as Tango Dancerand I Love You, comes a special four-in-one, full-color flipbook disguised as a stack of $100 bills. Running a thumb over the edges of the “bills” in the stack, the viewer will observe four short, satirical films on the transience of wealth. A recurring cast of characters plays roles based on stereotypes from slapstick silent movies: the wealthy, arrogant high roller; the robber in his prison stripes and domino mask; and the opportunistic showgirl. In a time of financial uncertainty gripping the world, this playful and good-natured item is a reminder that fortunes can change in the blink of an eye, but a sense of humor is an asset that, once possessed, can never be taken away.
