Flora of Los Angeles and Vicinity by Leroy Abrams Pdf

Excerpt from Flora of Los Angeles and Vicinity As a student of the flora of southern California, the author has long felt the need of some one book containing descriptions of the native plants. While it is essential that one doing critical work should laboriously search through scattered literature, the average student, and especially the novice, will find such a course impossible. In an endeavor to supply this need, the author has written this book. Not that he feels that the flora is so well known that such a work will prove adequate for years to come, but rather to bring together what knowledge now exists concerning the systematic side of our most interesting plant life. That many mistakes must unavoidably occur, and that many plants are yet to be added, is clearly apprehended. The exact area included in this volume is the coast slope of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This territory comprises a large portion of the great southern California valley, as well as the following mountain ranges, in each of which is named the culminating point: Sierra Santa Monica (Castro Peak 3946 ft.), Sierra San Fernando (San Fernando Peak 3793 ft.), Sierra San Gabriel (Mt. Gleason 6493 ft., San Gabriel Peak 6172 ft., Mt. San Antonio 10080 ft.), Sierra Santa Ana (Santiago Peak 5675 ft.). A number of the more conspicuous and common plants of southern California not known to occur within our boundaries are included, however, so that the student will find that a great majority of the plants to be met with on the coast slope south of Point Conception are described. Guide to Standard Floras of the World by David G. Frodin Pdf

This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Land of Sunshine by William Deverell,Greg Hise Pdf

Most people equate Los Angeles with smog, sprawl, forty suburbs in search of a city-the great "what-not-to-do" of twentieth-century city building. But there's much more to LA's story than this shallow stereotype. History shows that Los Angeles was intensely, ubiquitously planned. The consequences of that planning-the environmental history of urbanism--is one place to turn for the more complex lessons LA has to offer. Working forward from ancient times and ancient ecologies to the very recent past, Land of Sunshine is a fascinating exploration of the environmental history of greater Los Angeles. Rather than rehearsing a litany of errors or insults against nature, rather than decrying the lost opportunities of "roads not taken," these essays, by nineteen leading geologists, ecologists, and historians, instead consider the changing dynamics both of the city and of nature. In the nineteenth century, for example, "density" was considered an evil, and reformers struggled mightily to move the working poor out to areas where better sanitation and flowers and parks "made life seem worth the living." We now call that vision "sprawl," and we struggle just as much to bring middle-class people back into the core of American cities. There's nothing natural, or inevitable, about such turns of events. It's only by paying very close attention to the ways metropolitan nature has been constructed and construed that meaningful lessons can be drawn. History matters. So here are the plants and animals of the Los Angeles basin, its rivers and watersheds. Here are the landscapes of fact and fantasy, the historical actors, events, and circumstances that have proved transformative over and over again. The result is a nuanced and rich portrait of Los Angeles that will serve planners, communities, and environmentalists as they look to the past for clues, if not blueprints, for enhancing the quality and viability of cities.

Field Guide to the Flora of the San Gabriel Mountains by Orlando Mistretta Pdf

This field guide to the flora of the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California is at once a personal and entertaining account of the region's botanical context and history of exploration, and a long-awaited inventory of its flora. The author, Orlando Mistretta, grew up at the foot of this mountain range and has spent the past four decades of his botanical career exploring the far corners of this exceedingly rugged mountain range located in close proximity to Greater Los Angeles. Over 30 color photographs and maps accompany a detailed introduction to all aspects of the San Gabriels, including physical setting, project boundaries and history of its botanical exploration. Keys to plant families, genera, species and subspecific ranks are carefully formulated to be accessible to both botanical professionals and generalists. Species entries include information on taxonomic authorities, life form, abundance, habitat (vegetation types [including post-burn occurrences] and elevation), localities of occurrence (list of specific canyons and other locations), and a representative herbarium voucher. Notes on possible hybridization, historical records, alternative taxonomy and native versus introduced status are included. An index lists families, genera and species. This book is part of the Occasional Publications series published by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont, California, the largest botanic garden dedicated to California native flora.
