Florence: Split Seconds by Anonim Pdf

Florence, the city said to have been the birthplace of the Renaissance, is a culturally rich, architecturally magnificent, and scenically stunning backdrop for Abe Kogan's skillfully rendered black-and-white photography. His images capture Florence's enduring beauty in vivid portraits of modernism juxtaposed with ancient relics. Kogan's strikingly evocative images showcase bustling Florentine street life as well as atmospheric images of the city's parks, streets, and buildings. These dramatic photographs explore and celebrate the ageless appeal of Florence and the rich diversity of its inhabitants.

Split-Second Persuasion by Kevin Dutton Pdf

An “entertaining” look at the psychology and neuroscience behind the act of influencing others (Kirkus Reviews). People try to persuade us every day. From the news to the Internet to coworkers and family, everyone and everything wants to influence our thoughts in some way. And in turn, we hope to persuade others. Understanding the dynamics of persuasion can help us to achieve our own goals—and resist being manipulated by those who don’t necessarily have our best interests at heart. Psychologist Kevin Dutton has identified a powerful strain of immediate, instinctual persuasion, a method of influence that allows people to disarm skepticism, win arguments, and close deals. With a combination of astute methods and in-depth research in the fields of psychology and neuroscience, Dutton’s fascinating and provocative book: Introduces the natural super-persuaders in our midst: Buddhist monks, magicians, advertisers, con men, hostage negotiators, and even psychopaths. Reveals which hidden pathways in the brain lead us to believe something even when we know it’s not true. Explains how group dynamics can make us more tolerant or deepen our extremism. Illuminates the five elements of SPICE (simplicity, perceived self-interest, incongruity, confidence, and empathy) for instantly effective persuasion. “[Split-Second Persuasion] offers some powerful insights into the art and science of getting people to do what you want.” —New Scientist

The Drum Is a Wild Woman by Patricia G. Lespinasse Pdf

In 1957, Duke Ellington released the influential album A Drum Is a Woman. This musical allegory revealed the implicit truth about the role of women in jazz discourse—jilted by the musician and replaced by the drum. Further, the album’s cover displays an image of a woman sitting atop a drum, depicting the way in which the drum literally obscures the female body, turning the subject into an object. This objectification of women leads to a critical reading of the role of women in jazz music: If the drum can take the place of a woman, then a woman can also take the place of a drum. The Drum Is a Wild Woman: Jazz and Gender in African Diaspora Literature challenges that image but also defines a counter-tradition within women’s writing that involves the reinvention and reclamation of a modern jazz discourse. Despite their alienation from bebop, women have found jazz music empowering and have demonstrated this power in various ways. The Drum Is a Wild Woman explores the complex relationship between women and jazz music in recent African diasporic literature. The book examines how women writers from the African diaspora have challenged and revised major tropes and concerns of jazz literature since the bebop era in the mid-1940s. Black women writers create dissonant sounds that broaden our understanding of jazz literature. By underscoring the extent to which gender is already embedded in jazz discourse, author Patricia G. Lespinasse responds to and corrects narratives that tell the story of jazz through a male-centered lens. She concentrates on how the Wild Woman, the female vocalist in classic blues, used blues and jazz to push the boundaries of Black womanhood outside of the confines of respectability. In texts that refer to jazz in form or content, the Wild Woman constitutes a figure of resistance who uses language, image, and improvisation to refashion herself from object to subject. This book breaks new ground by comparing the politics of resistance alongside moments of improvisation by examining recurring literary motifs—cry-and-response, the Wild Woman, and the jazz moment—in jazz novels, short stories, and poetry, comparing works by Ann Petry, Gayl Jones, Toni Morrison, Paule Marshall, Edwidge Danticat, and Maya Angelou with pieces by Albert Murray, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Ellington. Within an interdisciplinary and transnational context, Lespinasse foregrounds the vexed negotiations around gender and jazz discourse.

Heather has reached the pinnacle of the publishing world through weaving suspenseful plots in romantic novels featuring vampires. She's the toast of the town to most, but to David her fiction threatens to toast a whole generation of readers in the broiler of Hell. He writes his own book to enlighten the world about the dangers and evil of vampire glorification. He and Heather appear to be perfect candidates for a fierce war of words, but the ardor for battle is diminished by their mutual attraction. Despite their attempts to squelch the magnetic pull, their chemistry causes romance to bubble under the surface through all of the twists and turns of their adversarial relationship. While Heather's mother schemes to get the two together, an old gentleman at the nursing home attempts to set David up with Cindy, a nurse at the home. Cindy's beauty falls short of Heather's, but her spiritual beauty surpasses and grows as she places her love for David on the alter and focuses on worshipping God rather than one of His creatures. As David's life of service to God poses continual challenges, he struggles to deal with the romantic tug of war which threatens to paralyze him and unravel the tapestry of his ministry. As a man who communes with God on a daily basis, he receives the word from the Lord that he needs to trust that all will be well. He does trust when faced with a dangerous situation on the streets, but finds that allowing God to safeguard his heart proves to be a tougher assignment.
