Frommer's Florida's Best-Loved Driving Tours by Paul Murphy Pdf

Driving is an ideal way to experience the varied scenery and attractions of Florida, and Frommer's Florida's Best-Loved Driving Tours is the only guide you'll need to take along. Author Paul Murphy has put together a spectacular collection of 1-to-5 day driving tours that hit the highlights of Florida. In the Southeast section, Tour 2 gives you an insider's view of Miami beach with a tour through the pastel buildings of the Art Deco district and a stop at the famous Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant, where the meal that has passed into Florida folklore is stone crabs with mustard sauce, garlic spinach and hash browns. Tour 6 is an in-depth look at Florida's Coral Keys. This tour includes a visit to the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Murphy's favorite underwater destination in all of Florida, where you can explore the wrecks and the reef by snorkeling, diving or cruising on a glass-bottomed boat. Tour 6 also includes a stop on Islamorada, which boasts a performing dolphin show as well as the title "Sport Fishing Capital of theWorld". If you're searching for water and sunshine, the four tours of the Central Gulf Coast are sure to satisfy, with numerous beach stops, a drive along the suspended Sunshine Skyway in the Pinellas and a visit to the warm mineral springs outside of Sarasota. Farther up in Central Florida, Murphy has designed driving tours that hit all the top attractions, both commercial and natural, in the area. All tours are packed with insider tips from the best rides at the Wet N' Wild water park to the dates of the November Light-Up Orlando festival. You'll enjoy all the top sights and then have the flexibility to enjoy the hidden pleasures of each destination. Our suggested routes include scenic detours and stops for spectacular views, easy walks, shopping, dining, and fun breaks for travelers with children. With dozens of driving tour options, detailed and color-coded maps, and exact, directions, distances and driving times, Frommer's Florida's Best-Loved Driving Tours is the only guide you'll need to see the best of Florida by car.

Backroads of Paradise by Cathy Salustri Pdf

In the 1930s, the Federal Writers' Project sent mostly anonymous writers, but also Zora Neale Hurston and Stetson Kennedy, into the depths of Florida to reveal its splendor to the world. The FWP and the State of Florida jointly published the results as Florida: A Guide to the Southernmost State, which included twenty-two driving tours of the state's main roads. Eventually, after Eisenhower built the interstates, drivers bypassed the small towns that thrived along these roads in favor of making better time. Those main roads are now the state's backroads—forgotten by all but local residents, a few commuters, and dedicated road-trippers. Retracing the original routes in the Guide, Cathy Salustri rekindles our notions of paradise by bringing a modern eye to the historic travelogues. Salustri's 5,000-mile road trip reveals a patchwork quilt of Florida cultures: startling pockets of history and environmental bliss stitched against the blight of strip malls and franchise restaurants. The journey begins on US 98, heading west toward the Florida/Alabama state line, where coastal towns dot the roadway. Here, locals depend on the tourism industry, spurred by sugar sand beaches, as well as the abundance of local seafood. On US 41, Salustri takes us past the state's only whitewater rapids, a retired carnie town, and a dazzling array of springs, swamps, and rivers interspersed with farms that produce a bounty of fruit. Along US 17, she stops for milkshakes and hamburgers at Florida's oldest diner and visits a collection of springs interconnected by underwater mazes tumbling through white spongy limestone, before stopping in Arcadia, where men still bring cattle to auction. Desperately searching for skunk apes, the Sunshine State's version of Bigfoot, she encounters more than one gator on her way through the Everglades, Ochopee, and the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters. Following the original Guide, Salustri crisscrosses the state from the panhandle to the Keys. She guides readers through forgotten and unknown corners of the state--nude beaches, a rattlesnake cannery, Devil's Millhopper in Gainesville--as well as more familiar haunts--Kennedy Space Center and The Villages, "Florida’s Friendliest Retirement Hometown." Woven through these journeys are nuggets of history, environmental debates about Florida's future, and a narrative that combines humor with a strong affection for an oft-maligned state. Today, Salustri urges, tourists need a new nudge to get off the interstates or away from Disney in order to discover the real Florida. Her travel narrative, following what are now backroads and scenic routes, guides armchair travelers and road warriors alike to historic sites, natural wonders, and notable man-made attractions--comparing the past views with the present landscape and commenting on the changes, some barely noticeable, others extreme, along the way.

Frommer's? Irreverent Guide to Manhattan by Ethan Wolff Pdf

Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world. Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Manhattan is as brash and ballsy as the Big Apple itself. You'll get the straight scoop on old chestnuts like the Empire State Building, as well as the skinny on new hotspots such as the sleek "neo-lounges" on the Lower East Side. With the Irreverent Guide, you'll become as mobile as the locals: a dim sum brunch in a bustling Chinatown banquet hall is just a subway ride away from a soul-food dinner in Harlem. Discover one of the city's secret bargains: the free ride on the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty. In the Irreverent Guide to Manhattan, the gloriously decadent City that Never Sleeps is made both manageable and deliciously fun—whether you choose to pursue the high life at the model hangouts and caviar bars or get down with the low life at Punjabi tandoor delis and cheesy karaoke bars.
