Quality Control of Highway Concrete Containing Fly Ash by Woodrow J. Halstead Pdf

This report is essentially a synthesis of pertinent information concerning the use of fly ash as an ingredient in concrete for highway construction. It has been prepared to provide a basis for an adequate response by the Department of Highways and Transportation to requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Environmental Protection Agency pertaining to the use of this by-product in concrete purchased with federal funds. Special attention is given to the quality control and acceptance problems associated with highway usage of fly ash concrete, with emphasis on problems relating to air entrainment. References to the background literature that established the suitability of fly ash as a pozzolan and its use in concrete are The requirements for fly ash as set forth in ASTM Specification C618 are reviewed and the- characteristics to be expected from concrete containing fly ash are discussed. It is recommended that the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation permit the use of fly ash in concrete at the option of the contractor with prior approval by the state. It is also recommended that suitable specifications for this use be prepared following the guidelines previously recommended by the Concrete Research Advisory Committee.

Handbook of Fly Ash by Kamal K. Kar Pdf

The drive to develop more sustainable materials has made fly ash a valuable raw material in many different applications. Comprehensive and authoritative, Handbook of Fly Ash highlights the latest research efforts to develop the properties of fly ash to maximum utility while safeguarding the environment. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the research into the classification and compositions of various types of fly ash, such as bottom ash and boiler slag, special classes of fly ash, and their sources around the globe. This is followed by a discussion of fly ash-reinforced composites, such as elastomer-based composites and metal matrix composites. This book also covers a wide range of applications of fly ash in cement, concrete, bricks and blocks, road construction, wastewater treatment, and scrubber sludge solidification. Highlights the recent developments in the utilization of fly ash including its preparation, functionalization, properties, and handling. Places a focus on a wide variety of fly ash applications including recent innovations, such as alkali-activated binder, polypropylene composite, and geopolymer concrete. Includes comprehensive coverage of the characteristics of fly ash with a particular focus on health hazards if it is not properly disposed. Discusses fly ash-reinforced composites, such as polymer/elastomer-based composites and metal matrix composites.

Zero Waste: Management Practices for Environmental Sustainability by Ashok K. Rathoure Pdf

Zero Waste: Management Practices for Environmental Sustainability presents approaches for resource management centered on reducing waste and reusing and recycling materials. It aims to save energy by reducing energy consumption associated with extracting, processing, and transporting raw materials and waste, and also to reduce and eventually eliminate the need for landfills and incinerators. This book presents the various principles, methods, and tools that can be used to address different issues in the areas of industrial waste reduction and sustainability. It examines how to eliminate waste at the source and at all points of a supply chain, and how to shift from the current one-way linear resource model to a sustainable "closed-loop" system. Proposes strategies for businesses to reduce and reuse waste with a goal of reaching a zero waste status. Focuses on how mitigating waste and promoting recycling can save vast amounts of energy. Explains how the zero waste approach would be a key measure to ensure environmental sustainability and help to offset global climate change.

Coal Combustion Byproducts by United States. Congress. House. Committee on Small Business. Subcommittee on Rural Development, Entrepreneurship, and Trade Pdf

"The subcommittee has called this hearing so that members might learn more about coal ash, the small businesses that turn coal ash into useful products and the concerns that these businesses have about the proposed Federal regulations that they believe may have a negative effect on their industry ... The EPA has recently issued two proposals for regulating coal ash. One would regulate coal ash as a solid waste and would provide very limited Federal enforceability and may not provide adequate protection of the environment and human health. The other would list coal ash as a special waste under the Hazardous Waste Subtitle in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Subtitle C. The second option is one that we will focus on ... since it has generated great concerns among small businesses across this country. These businesses, many of which are represented here today, have reason to believe that regulating coal ash under Subtitle C, even as a special waste, will open recycling operations to added litigation and a stigma that will discourage the ... use of the products made with recycled coal ash."--P. 1-2.
