Following the Equator, A Journey Around the World by Mark Twain, describes the author's experience as he travels around the world. The author, whose real name is Samuel Clemens, is accompanied by his wife and daughter on the thirteen-month trip. Their travels occur in the late eighteen hundreds and they traveled by various means of transportation. Beginning in Paris, where the family is living at the time, they begin by sailing to New York, crossing the American continent, and boarding a ship in Victoria, British Columbia. This is where the story really begins, since Twain has little to say about their experiences on the North American continent. The thirteen-month journey takes them to Hawaii, the Fijis, Australia, New Zealand, Ceylon, Mauritius, Mozambique, and South Africa before they sail to England. The return journey to England takes two weeks. Twain has a variety of experiences as he travels, just as most people do. He describes these experiences in his own rich way with his own brand of wit. He relates the experiences of the various accommodations on ship and shore, complaining about the bedding on the ships and the noise in the hotel halls in India. There are the servants that are constantly in and out of their quarters, the experience of riding in a jinricksha, trains in India and handcarts in the Himalayas. He describes his experiences at the betrothal party of an Indian girl, riding an elephant for the first time, and visiting Molokai, the leper colony in Hawaii. There was shark fishing in Australia and tiger hunting in India, plus diamond mining in South Africa. Like all travelers, Twain enjoyed these experiences.

A happy and interesting jumble is this book of Mark Twain's. It is like a lucky-bag at a fair. In his zigzag journey around the world, the humorist has made a collection of odds and ends of fun, philosophy, and fantastic description, such as has never been gathered in the pages of a single book, and any one dipping in at random is sure of a prize. The heterogeneous mass has some pretense of being loosely strung together, but it is on a line as long as the Equator itself. It is a traveler's miscellany — a globe-trotter's hotch-potch — a sociologist's cabinet of specimens, all bearing the quaint labelings of the creator of Pudd'nhead Wilson. Here is a rare bit of humor surreptitiously picked up in a New Zealand drawing-room; there a sample fragment of a life-tragedy which the trophy-hunter knocked off Molokai. This division of the cabinet contains an incident from the stage-door of a New York theater; that, next to it, a unique string of anecdotes of tiger-hunting in Baroda. And according to the labels, many of the specimens were picked up in very unexpected places; as for instance, the yarn about Barnum which the collector found in Delagoa bay. But wherever found, or however incongruously grouped, this cabinet of odds and ends of life is one of the most interesting and unique collections ever made by a traveler.

When Twain sets off on his voyage from Victoria, he first travels by ship, a mode of transportation with which he is quite familiar. Twain describes this in his non-fiction account. ''Ours was a reasonably comfortable ship, with the customary sea-going fare--plenty of good food furnished by the Deity and cooked by the devil.'' Comfort is essential, especially because of the length of time spent on the ship; it takes seven days for the ship to arrive at its first destination, Honolulu, though a cholera outbreak prevents them from going ashore. As Twain sits ''about the decks in the shade of the awnings and look(s) at the distant shore,'' he reminisces about his time years before on the island and its history. At day break, it's time to head to Fiji. When he gets to Fiji, Twain observes the beauty of the world in front of him. ''. . .a broad belt of clean white coral sand around the island; back of it a graceful fringe of leaning palms, with native huts nestling cosily among the shrubbery at their bases; back of these a stretch of level land clothed in tropic vegetation; back of that, rugged and picturesque mountains.'' While on land, he realizes that the islands have more than beauty. They now have the bicycle, thus becoming a more modernized region.
