Pranklopedia by Julie Winterbottom Pdf

Pranklopedia is the young practical joker’s secret weapon, a boisterous collection of over 70 guaranteed-to-amuse (or annoy) pranks to be pulled on friends, siblings, and parents. Discover the Homework Hoax, the Squirting Blister, the Movie Popcorn That Grabs You Back. Pull classic pranks on your siblings, like short-sheeting the bed. Freak out your friends with food pranks: a self-peeling banana, “misfortune” cookies, or ice cream that will make them scream (here’s a hint—it involves instant mashed potatoes). And there are perfect pranks to pull on your parents, including a scheme to “freeze” the family computer. The book includes recipes for fake bird poop, fake dog poop, fake vomit, and fake snot (regular, nosebleed, and wormy varieties). Plus you’ll find 40 pages of cutout pranks: fake labels (mmm…Cream of Sparrow Soup!), a “winning” lottery ticket, bogus bathroom signs, and letters from school that will make your parents cringe. A complete prankster’s guide, Pranklopedia also provides a four-part lesson on how to pull the perfect prank and tells you what to do when pranks go bad: 1. Disappear for a while . . .

Footprints in the Snow and Sand by Danuta Gray Pdf

This is the personal story of the author's early childhood and that of her family leading up to and following the Soviet invasion of Eastern Poland in September 1939, a political move made in conjunction with the simultaneous Nazi invasion of the country from the West. Eastern Poland (as the boundaries then existed) had a high proportion of Ukrainians and there had long been tension between the two races. After the Soviet occupation discriminatory laws were passed against the Poles that even made it permissible for their murder, to torch their houses, and destroy their businesses. Polish children were excluded from schools and it became a frightening place in which to live, and Frank and Helen (the author's parents) and their two children were again forced to live with the in-laws. Several days later Russian soldiers arrived and arrested the entire family as "enemies of the Soviet Union," and together with others, they were packed into cattle wagons and taken on a harrowing six-week journey to a Siberian gulag. There they were fed black bread and boiling water once a day. For two weeks Helen concealed the fact that her son had died on the journey because dead bodies were thrown out to the wolves. In the camp they were maltreated and forced into heavy labour. In July 1941 Hitler invaded Russia and Stalin declared an amnesty for the Poles and they were released in December but without the support of food or transport. They walked for six months throughout a harsh winter, and were reduced to eating their leather belts and the bark of trees. Many were then conscripted in the struggle against Hitler, and of the 1.7 million people arrested in Eastern Poland in 1939, only half of them had survived by the time they reached Krasnovodsk in 1942. From there they were taken to Pahlevi in Teheran, and finally to Karachi in India.

Footprints in the Snow by Kenjiro Tokutomi Pdf

First published in 1901 and this English translation in 1970, Footprints in the Snow is one of the most popular novels in modern Japan. It is the story of the struggle of a penniless Japanese boy Shintaro Kikuchi, for education and emancipation. Determined to rebuild the family fortunes after his father's bankruptcy, Shintaro runs away from home in a remote corner of Kyushu, in the hope of making his way in the world. Robbed by pickpockets, he nearly dies of hunger and exhaustion, then after slaving for months as a money-lender’s boy eventually succeeds in reaching a Christian College in Kyoto. A brilliant student, he accepts Christianity enthusiastically, but is also repelled by the arrogance of the Western missionary teachers towards a Japanese colleague that he walks out in protest. At last, four years after leaving home, Shintaro arrives in Tokyo. Yet even in the city of his dreams his life is far from peaceful- Shintaro has to struggle to keep himself at University, to pursue his career as a writer and journalist and in order to marry the girl he loves. The original Japanese title of Footprints in the Snow is Omoide no Ki. Kenjiro Tokutomi ‘s novel is still read in Japan today and more than any other novel conveys what it felt like to be young in the days of Japan’s great transformation from feudal to modern state. This is an interesting read for students of Japanese literature, Asian literature, and literature in general

Abominable Science! by Daniel Loxton,Donald R. Prothero Pdf

“A sharp analysis of the quest for unreal critters―cryptids, as they are called―and the people who pursue them . . . entertaining and thoroughly documented.” —The Wall Street Journal Throughout our history, humans have been captivated by mythic beasts and legendary creatures. Tales of Bigfoot, the Yeti, and the Loch Ness monster are part of our collective experience. Now comes a book from two dedicated investigators that explores and elucidates the fascinating world of cryptozoology. Daniel Loxton and Donald R. Prothero have written an entertaining, educational, and definitive text on cryptids, presenting the arguments both for and against their existence and systematically challenging the pseudoscience that perpetuates their myths. After examining the nature of science and pseudoscience and their relation to cryptozoology, Loxton and Prothero take on Bigfoot; the Yeti, or Abominable Snowman, and its cross-cultural incarnations; the Loch Ness monster and its highly publicized sightings; the evolution of the Great Sea Serpent; and Mokele Mbembe, or the Congo dinosaur. They conclude with an analysis of the psychology behind the persistent belief in paranormal phenomena, identifying the major players in cryptozoology, discussing the character of its subculture, and considering the challenge it poses to clear and critical thinking in our increasingly complex world. “As valuable for its analysis of the hunted as it is for the light it shines on the still-hopeful hunters.” —Publishers Weekly “Highly recommended for readers looking for scientific but accessible evaluations of the existence of five notable cryptids that have captured our imaginations.” —Library Journal (starred review)
