For No Reason at All by Jeffrey A. Hinkelman Pdf

The years following the signing of the Armistice saw a transformation of traditional attitudes regarding military conflict as America attempted to digest the enormity and futility of the First World War. During these years popular film culture in the United States created new ways of addressing the impact of the war on both individuals and society. Filmmakers with direct experience of combat created works that promoted their own ideas about the depiction of wartime service—ideas that frequently conflicted with established, heroic tropes for the portrayal of warfare on film. Those filmmakers spent years modifying existing standards and working through a variety of storytelling options before achieving a consensus regarding the fitting method for rendering war on screen. That consensus incorporated facets of the experience of Great War veterans, and these countered and undermined previously accepted narrative strategies. This process reached its peak during the Pre-Code Era of the early 1930s when the initially prevailing narrative would be briefly supplanted by an entirely new approach that questioned the very premises of wartime service. Even more significantly, the rhetoric of these films argued strongly for an antiwar stance that questioned every aspect of the wartime experience. For No Reason at All: The Changing Narrative of the First World War in American Film discusses a variety of Great War–themed films made from 1915 to the present, tracing the changing approaches to the conflict over time. Individual chapters focus on movie antecedents, animated films and comedies, the influence of literary precursors, the African American film industry, women-centered films, and the effect of the Second World War on depictions of the First. Films discussed include Hearts of the World, The Cradle of Courage, Birthright, The Big Parade, She Goes to War, Doughboys, Young Eagles, The Last Flight, Broken Lullaby, Lafayette Escadrille, and Wonder Woman, among many others.

Happy for No Reason by Marci Shimoff,Carol Kline Pdf

Everyone wants to be happy--yet so many people are unhappy today. What are they doing wrong? Clearly, a new approach is needed. Self-help guru Shimoff presents three new ideas and a practical program to change the way readers look at creating happiness in their lives: 1. Happiness is not an emotion, a spike of elation or euphoria, but a lasting, neuro-physiological state of peace and well-being. 2. True happiness is not based on what people do or have--it doesn't depend on external reasons or circumstances. 3. Research indicates that everyone has a happiness set-point. No matter what happens to a person, they will tend to return to a set range of happiness. This book shows how you can actually reprogram your set-point to a higher level.--From publisher description.

Some Rhyme No Reason by Charlotte Herzele Pdf

Some Rhyme, No Reason is a collection of poems that reflect my response(s) to life, in general. I was inspired to "collect" them by a member of the amazing group of poets to which I have the pleasure of belonging. These lovely people, Alyce, Barry, Carlos, Jazz, Oak, and Victoria, provide loving, gentle criticism and, more importantly, they keep me writing. Writing poetry keeps me sane and helps me "deal". In lieu of the great American novel, I give you "Some Rhyme" in hopes it might help you "deal" as well.

Why exactly do we immerse ourselves in true crime podcasts and TV shows? Has this appetite for gore shifted over the years? And what role does the crime reporter play in all of this? In this compelling book, Martin Brunt draws on the most shocking and harrowing stories he's covered over the past thirty years to document the life of a crime reporter and assess the public obsession with crime that his reporting caters for. He also considers the wider relationship between the press and the police, the impact of social media and the question of why some crimes are ignored while others grip the nation. Featuring many undisclosed details on some of the biggest cases Brunt has covered, from the 'Diamond Wheezers' to Fred and Rose West, this blend of storytelling and analysis is not only a riveting overview of the nature of crime reporting but a reflection on the purpose of the profession in the first place.

No Reason to Hide by Erwin W. Lutzer Pdf

Will You Be Complicit, Complacent, or Courageous? In a culture with an ever-narrowing definition of tolerance, Christians can no longer stay silent about the divide between the Bible’s truth and the world’s lies. From bestselling author Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, No Reason to Hide examines the toxic roots behind the alarming symptoms of a nation in spiritual freefall—and why your faith must empower you to engage rather than hide. As you read, you’ll be equipped to defend your biblical beliefs with confidence and compassion. You’ll also identify how you can respond to the battleground issues of today, including identity-driven social justice ideologies that seek to divide rather than unite cultural attacks on the definitions of sex and gender that turn language into a war progressive pushes within the church that ultimately desecrate the Bible’s teachings A call for believers to standing firm in today’s oppressive world, No Reason to Hide is a rallying reminder that will ready Christians everywhere to have the courage to proclaim Scripture’s truth to a culture in desperate need of what only God can offer.

No Reason for Goodbyes by Chassie West Pdf

No Reason for Goodbyes - Messages from Beyond Life is a compilation of over one hundred instances of messages or contacts from the departed, submitted by the men and women who experienced them, contributors from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and as far away as Australia. There is Colleen who, during the Arlington National Cemetery memorial service for her father, a veteran of World War II, saw him standing tall and erect in the distance for the playing of the Marine Corps Hymn. And Jacki who, as she knelt to pray the Rosary before bedtime, felt a presence beside her and heard the voice of her late father: Teach me how to say it. And Tylers sister, Robyn, whod died in infancy, sending a message during a television show that she liked the new athletic shoes hed just bought. Incidents such as these leave no doubt of the continuation of life beyond physical death and the assurance that our loved ones remain with us still. Transcripts and detailed messages from the departed, courtesy of well-known psychic mediums during group and one-on-one readings offer further proof of continued life after death. And from Patti Sinclair, a professional psychic medium, along with Dr. Bhrett McCabe, a licensed clinical psychologist and his mother, Mary Jo McCabe, a professional psychic intuitive, we are given sage advice for those among us who are skeptical or grieving. No Reason for Goodbyes strongly suggests that we rethink everything we have believed about the finality of death. It confirms that those who have departed from our physical world can and do reach out and touch, in some cases, quite literally, and that love is indeed eternal. If there was ever a time for a paradigm shift about the way we view death, that time is now.

Why I Write by George Orwell Pdf

George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times
