For Reasons Unknown by David Phillips Pdf

If Americans knew the real reason Senator Joseph Bibby, Jr. voted for a change in the National Energy Policy, or what crimes oil tycoon Neil Rodkin was willing to commit to "save" the country from Middle Eastern oil companies, the current world situation - war, high gas prices, and terrorism - would all make sense. The kidnapping of Desi Adams, Senator Bibby's secret sex toy, by a wealthy oil tycoon leads to an action packed hunt through the streets of D.C. and the suburbs of Virginia by Desi's boyfriend, police officer Nate Ramano. At the same time, Middle Eastern oil cartels and environmental terrorists are tying to manipulate other key politicians into continuing the moratorium on oil exploration in Alaska's Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). These competing interests cause chaos in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and political turmoil inside the beltway.

Chosen for Reasons Unknown by Murray Ebner Pdf

Murray (Moniek) Ebner was born in 1928 in Nowy Wiśnicz, Poland, to a Jewish family. In August 1940 the Jews of his town were resettled by the Nazis in nearby Bochnia; Ebner's family managed to flee from the column of those being resettled and hid at the farm of their acquaintances, named Klein, whom they paid for their stay. In March 1941 the Kleins, fearing Nazi searches, drove them out of their farm, and the Ebners were forced to enter the ghetto of Bochnia. In August 1942, one day before a large deportation, the Ebners escaped from the ghetto and hid in an abandoned market. While looking for a job and some food for his family, Moniek was apprehended by the Germans and sent to the Płaszów labor camp. From 1942-January 1945 he went through the labor camps of Płaszów and Kielce, Auschwitz, and Trzebinia, a satellite camp of Auschwitz. In January 1945, during a death march, he fled the column of prisoners and met a unit of Polish partisans, who gave him a temporal hiding place. After the liberation, Moniek returned to Nowy Wiśnicz, trying to find traces of his family, but his parents and three brothers never returned. Later he emigrated with a group of orphans to the U.S., where he was taken in by relatives.

Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot by Mark Taylor-Batty,Juliette Taylor-Batty Pdf

"An impressively complete survey of the play in its cultural, theatrical, historical and political contexts." - David Bradby, co-editor of Contemporary Theatre Review Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot is not only an indisputably important and influential dramatic text -it is also one of the most significant western cultural landmarks of the twentieth century. Originally written in French, the play first amazed and appalled Parisian theatre-goers and critics before receiving a harshly dismissive initial critical response in Britain in 1955. Its influence since then on the international stage has been significant, impacting on generations of actors, directors and audiences.

Arguing the Apocalypse by Stephen D. O'Leary Pdf

Apocalyptic expectations of Armageddon and a New Age have been a fixture of the American cultural landscape for centuries. With the approach of the year 2000, such millennial visions seem once again to be increasing in popularity. Stephen O'Leary sheds new light on the age-old phenomenon of the End of the Age by proposing a rhetorical explanation for the appeal of millennialism. Using examples of apocalyptic argument from ancient to modern times, O'Leary identifies the recurring patterns in apocalyptic texts and movements and shows how and why the Christian Apocalypse has been used to support a variety of political stances and programs. The book concludes with a critical review of the recent appearances of doomsday scenarios in our politics and culture, and a meditation on the significance of the Apocalypse in the nuclear age. Arguing the Apocalypse is the most thorough examination of its subject to date: a study of a neglected chapter of our religious and cultural history, a guide to the politics of Armageddon, and a map of millennial consciousness.

Adaptations, Versions and Perversions in Modern British Drama by Ignacio Ramos Gay Pdf

This book aims to explore which plays were deemed ‘suitable’ to be reworked for foreign or local stages; what transformations – linguistic, semiotic, theatrical – were undertaken so as to accommodate international audiences; how national literary traditions are forged, altered, and diluted by means of transnational adapting techniques; and, finally, to what extent the categorical boundaries between original plays and adaptations may be blurred on the account of such adjusting textual strategies. It brings together ten articles that scrutinise the linguistic, social, political and theatrical complexities inherent in the intercultural transference of plays. The approaches presented by the different contributors investigate modern British theatre as an instance of diachronic and synchronic transnational adaptations based upon a myriad of influences originating in, and projected upon, other national dramatic traditions. These traditions, rooted in relatively distant geographies and epochs, are traced so as to illustrate the split between the state-imposed identity and personal, subjective identity caused by cultural negotiations of the self in an age of globalism. International frontiers are thus pointed at in order to claim the need to be transcended in the process of cultural re-appropriation associated with theatre performance for international audiences.

Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty Pdf

A BuzzFeed "Best Book of June 2021" From sixteen-year-old Dara McAnulty, a globally renowned figure in the youth climate activist movement, comes a memoir about loving the natural world and fighting to save it. Diary of a Young Naturalist chronicles the turning of a year in Dara’s Northern Ireland home patch. Beginning in spring?when “the sparrows dig the moss from the guttering and the air is as puffed out as the robin’s chest?these diary entries about his connection to wildlife and the way he sees the world are vivid, evocative, and moving. As well as Dara’s intense connection to the natural world, Diary of a Young Naturalist captures his perspective as a teenager juggling exams, friendships, and a life of campaigning. We see his close-knit family, the disruptions of moving and changing schools, and the complexities of living with autism. “In writing this book,” writes Dara, “I have experienced challenges but also felt incredible joy, wonder, curiosity and excitement. In sharing this journey my hope is that people of all generations will not only understand autism a little more but also appreciate a child’s eye view on our delicate and changing biosphere.” Winner of the Wainwright Prize for UK nature writing and already sold into more than a dozen territories, Diary of a Young Naturalist is a triumphant debut from an important new voice.

The Memorial Ethics of Libeskind's Berlin Jewish Museum by Arleen Ionescu Pdf

This book is a detailed critical study of Libeskind’s Berlin Jewish Museum in its historical, architectural and philosophical context. Emphasizing how the Holocaust changed our perception of history, memory, witnessing and representation, it develops the notion of ‘memorial ethics’ to explore the Museum’s difference from more conventional post-World War Two commemorative sites. The main focus is on the Museum as an experience of the materiality of trauma which engages the visitor in a performative duty to remember. Arleen Ionescu builds on Levinas’s idea of ‘ethics as optics’ to show how Libeskind’s Museum becomes a testimony to the unpresentable Other. Ionescu also extends the Museum’s experiential dimension by proposing her own subjective walk through Libeskind’s space reimagined as a ‘literary museum’. Featuring reflections on texts by Beckett, Celan, Derrida, Kafka, Blanchot, Wiesel and Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger (Celan’s cousin), this virtual tour concludes with a brief account of Libeskind’s analogous ‘healing project’ for Ground Zero.

Unrecognised by the World at Large by Alastair Robson Pdf

The building of asylums throughout the country in the middle of the 19th Century expressly for the pauper mentally ill, who would otherwise have had no means of obtaining any medical care at all for themselves or their family members, was enlightened thinking by the Victorians. Victorian doctors of the mentally ill (or 'alienists' as they were known) were dedicated physicians who laboured under difficult circumstances to provide care, and occasionally cure, for their patients, whose numbers were to rise remorselessly throughout the Century. Unrecognised by the World at Large is a biography of Dr Henry Parsey, the first physician to the Warwick Asylum at Hatton, is a study of a 19th century provincial alienist’s medical training and career – with an intimate glimpse of his domestic life in his last years – and discusses extensively the care of the mentally ill before and after the asylum era. Dr Parsey was a pupil of two of the most famous English physicians to the mentally ill, Dr John Conolly and Sir John Bucknill; both of whom had been in medical practice in Warwickshire. Under Dr Henry Parsey’s supervision, the Warwick Asylum was internationally respected for the excellence of its care, yet he remained unrecognised by the world at large; Alastair’s book offers the same recognition to Dr Parsey as is given to other illustrious Victorian alienists. Inspired by the work of Michael Holroyd and Richard Ellmann, Unrecognised by the World at Largeoffers readers a unique perspective of the life and work of Dr Parsey. It will appeal to readers interested in medical history and the Victorian asylum era, as well as those interested in the history of the Warwickshire area.

The People of the Eye by Harlan Lane,Richard C. Pillard,Ulf Hedberg Pdf

What are ethnic groups? Are Deaf people who sign American Sign Language (ASL) an ethnic group? In The People of the Eye, Deaf studies, history, cultural anthropology, genetics, sociology, and disability studies are brought to bear as the authors compare the values, customs, and social organization of the Deaf World to those in ethnic groups. Arguing against the common representation of ASL signers as a disability group, the authors discuss the many challenges to Deaf ethnicity in this first book-length examination of these issues. Stepping deeper into the debate around ethnicity status, The People of the Eye also describes, in a compelling narrative, the story of the founding families of the Deaf World in the US. Tracing ancestry back hundreds of years, the authors reveal that Deaf people's preference to marry other Deaf people led to the creation of Deaf clans, and thus to shared ancestry and the discovery that most ASL signers are born into the Deaf World, and many are kin. In a major contribution to the historical record of Deaf people in the US, The People of the Eye portrays how Deaf people- and hearing people, too- lived in early America. For those curious about their own ancestry in relation to the Deaf World, the figures and an associated website present pedigrees for over two hundred lineages that extend as many as three hundred years and are unique in genealogy research. The book contains an every-name index to the pedigrees, providing a rich resource for anyone who is interested in Deaf culture.
