The Italian crop estimated at million boxes, is 7 percent above the 1947 crop of million and 10 percent above the prewar average of Specialized plantings of citrus trees have increased per cent ever the 1936-39 period but have remained rather constant for the past 3 years. The yield from these trees probably will increase in 1949-50. Spain had an indicated.cr0p in 1948 of million boxes, 7 percent below the 1947 crop of million but 6 percent above the prewar average of Reductions were mostly.in the provinces of Castellon and valencia, and resulted largely from.freeze damage in January of 1946. Weather conditions, generally were not favorable for growing; during December and January there was some rainy and foggy weather and occasional heavy winds. Revised estimates for Japan place the orange crop at million boxes, 140 percent more than the relatively small 1947 crop of mil lion but about equal the prewar average. South America is new indicated to have a total production of million boxes, 3 percent b low the 1947 crop of million and about the same as the prewar avejage of The decline in production is the result of dry and otherwise un favorable weather during the Spring of 1948, locust and fruit fly ih foetations and extensive tree damage by\ tristeza.
