Foreign travellers in the Slovene karst (1537–1900) by Trevor R. Shaw Pdf

Slovene Karst and Caves in the Past by Trevor Shaw,Alenka Čuk Pdf

The caves and dramatic limestone scenery of the Slovene karst have attracted visitors for centuries. The great stalagmites and roaring underground rivers were seen by relatively few people at that time but many of them did record their experiences in diaries as well as in print. These are used in the book, which is a result of a long-time collaboration between an English historian of speleology and a Slovene historian, to describe what they saw and what they thought about it, with contemporary illustrations by contemporary artists and photographers. Modern tourism derives from the tours led by Thomas Cook who first came to Postojnska jama in 1868. Music in that cave has a very long history for dancing or concerts. This is only one example of the relation between caves and people as a constant theme in this book. Altogether the 39 chapters describe, for example, the problems facing all travellers in pre-railway days and point out that one of the very first women to explore difficult caves did so at Škocjan. Also touched upon is Darwin’s interest in Slovene cave animals and a lot more. V tej jami že vrsto let prirejajo glasbene oziroma plesne prireditve.

A Biographical Bibliography. Explorers, Scientists & Visitors In the World's Karst 852 BC to the Present by Christine Ballinger,Trevor Shaw Pdf

V mnogih drugih le spodbuda in sprostitev v sicer napornem življenju. Toda v vsakem primeru so ista oseba in isti možgani uživali oboje; in oboje ju je osebnostno izoblikovalo. Razumemo jih lahko le s pomočjo tukaj zbranih bibliografskih virov.

Karstology in the Classical Karst by Martin Knez,Bojan Otoničar,Metka Petrič,Tanja Pipan,Tadej Slabe Pdf

This book presents the latest advances in karstology by researchers at the ZRC SAZU Karst Research Institute, Slovenia – home of Classical Karst. It features interdisciplinary investigations carried out on the karst surface, subsurface, caves, and associated waters. It covers various topics, such as analysis of karst processes, including the mineralogical and lithological characteristics of sediments and carbonate rocks; structural geological mapping; detecting the old traces of paleokarst; the formation of karst surfaces in a variety of types of rock and conditions; and the evolution of karst, which can aid in dating sediments, and in tracing aquifers using artificial and natural tracers. In addition, the book provides detailed information on the use and development of various research methods, ranging from comprehensive field research, long-term measurements, and laboratory analyses to computer and laboratory modeling. Integrating karst geology, geomorphology, hydrology, ecology, speleobiology, and microbiology research, these methods provide readers with a far deeper understanding of karst terrains.

Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts on Cave Climates by Stanka Sebela Pdf

Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts on Cave Climates: Postojna and Predjama Show Caves (Slovenia) presents an analysis of continuous time-series data for show caves in Slovenia and their significance in understanding global cave microclimates. The book presents detailed guidelines and procedures for conducting temperature and CO2 measurements in caves and uses Slovenian caves as a detailed case study to demonstrate their application. Critical interpretations of these temporal series provide the reader with specific indicators of the conditions for water condensation to occur and CO2 thresholds and how to apply them to different cave systems. Direct comparisons are made between microclimate data from caves with varying levels of tourism, and the linkage between the number of visitors and microclimate changes is discussed in detail. This book is a unique reference on cave meteorology for Climate Scientists, Meteorologists, Geologists, Microbiologists, Environmental and Conservation Scientists, and Cave Managers. Presents and analyzes an exceptional 10-year record of hourly time-series meteorological data of karst cave systems Provides methods and guidelines for conducting meteorological measurements in caves with detailed case studies Demonstrates the impact anthropogenic influences have on cave microclimates through real-time data analysis

John Oliver's Postojnska Jama of 1856 by Trevor R. Shaw Pdf

Names from the Past in Postojnska jama (Postojna cave) by Trevor Shaw Pdf

The A to Z of Slovenia by Leopoldina Plut-Pregelj,Carole Rogel Pdf

For more than 1,300 years Slovenes had lived in Eastern Europe without having a separate Slovene state, but in December of 1990, they voted for independence, or, put more appropriately, for "disassociation" from Yugoslavia. Unfortunately, Slovenia had to fight for its independence, which it did not fully achieve until 1995 after its bloody disintegration with Yugoslavia was over. Since independence, however, Slovenia has prospered; its economy is far ahead of other former communist states and in 2004 Slovenia acceded to both NATO and the European Union, the only republic of former Yugoslavia to do so. The A to Z of Slovenia covers the history of Slovenia and its struggle to gain independence from communism. This is done through a detailed chronology, an introduction, appendixes, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on some of the more significant persons, places, and events; institutions and organizations; and political, economic, social, cultural, and religious facets.

Škocjanske jame 1920-1940 by Trevor Shaw Pdf

Jame so obiskovali že prej, a v 20. in 30. letih so si prizadevali urediti turistične poti skoz jame, z novimi mostovi in stezami, a tudi novim predorom do površja. Ob tem so jame še dodatno raziskali, premerili in o njih objavili sveže znanstvene razprave. Poročali so tudi o malo poznani usodni nesreči. Skozi celotno obdobje so posamezni vodniki, raziskovalci in upravniki napisali zelo človeško in razburljivo zgodbo. Kar knjigo dela še posebej pomembno, je izjemen prispevek italijanskih arhivov in zgodovinarjev.
